Have you ever dreamed of managing a baseball team where you could have Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron back-to-back in your lineup? Or have a rotation that featured Roger Clemens twice? Or maybe you want Ernie Banks turning two, while playing two alongside Mike Schmidt? Maybe you dream of a battery with Gaylord Perry and Chris Hoiles, or an outfield roamed by Mickey Mantle and Willie Ways? Maybe you want to reunite post season legends like Joe Carter and Orel Hershiser, or imagine post game press conferences with Ty Cobb and Curt Schilling? Perhaps what you really hunger for is Phil Neikro taking the mound and being relieved by John Wetteland?

If any of those describe you ... good news: this is the game for you.

In this, the 8th version of a Sports Draft Facilitated by Simulations at WhatIf Sports ... you are invited to try to build the greatest baseball team in history.

    Good luck beating this, though:

The first baseball draft was won by @Point Given. In addition to eternal bragging rights, he get automatic entry into this draft, and the first overall pick. If this is your first time, you might find it helpful to review the other sports draft:

The First NBA Draft, won by @EmpireForever (Able to draft any player any time)
The Second NBA Draft, won by @tom (Limited to only players from the 2012-13 NBA Season)
The Third NBA Draft, won by @tom (Back to any player, any time)
The Fourth NBA Draft, won by @PRENNTACULAR (auction style Franchise Acquisition)
The Fifth NBA Draft, won by @Point Given (all GMs must draft from the same franchise every round)
The First College Football Draft, won by @LloydChristmas (any player from the modern era)
The First Baseball Draft, won by @Point Given (All GMS must draft from the same franchise every round)

We'll be making a few modification from the first draft i the hopes of making this one even better

So, here's how it's going to go:

    The Participants:

    1) The Commish - That's me. I'm going to keep the draft going by moving along the selection process (see below), posting games, posting results, and generally keeping the game moving forward.
    2) The GMs - that's you. Six or Eight of you. Or Ten. Or Nine. Or Eleven. Or thirty-seven. Whatever. However many of you want to play, I'll find a way to accommodate it. You'll assemble your team, put together lineups, and respond to the ebbs and flows in your attempts to win

    The Phases of the Game:

The GMs will be randomized into an order that will be slightly modified every round. This will continue for 24 rounds. The modification each round is due to the wrinkle we are throwing into the draft. The first pick in a round determines the Franchise from which every pick in that round must come from. the same Franchise can be selected multiple times.

    1) The Draft and Signing Period

The GMs will be randomized into an order that will be slightly modified every round (with the exception that PG is #1 in the first round). This will continue for 24* rounds. The modification each round is due to the wrinkle we are throwing into the draft. The first pick in a round determines the Franchise from which every pick in that round must come from. the same Franchise can be selected multiple times.

(*24 is subject to change based on the number of GMs who play. I'm going to set it up so equity reigns in the draft and nobody gets more #1 picks than anyone else - this will be subject to fluidity

For the purposes of this draft, we will consider a Franchise to be continued through relocation. The Dodgers means you can pick from the Brooklyn Dodgers as well as the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Montreal Expos gives you access to the (Current) Washington Nationals. And so on.

Once all drafting rounds are complete, each GM will be able to finalize their roster through the Signing Period mechanism.

Each GM will start with $100. During this phase, every GM with roster spots left to fill (and money available) will send a list of up to five players to me via private message. Once all eligible GMs send in their list or 24 hours elapses. the claims will be finished.

    • If only one GM puts in a claim to sign a player, they will sign that player for $8
    • If multiple GMs put in a claim to sign a player, that player goes up on auction
      • At this point, any GM with Money and Roster Spots may bid on the player
      • Bids should be sent via PM to me and are due within 24 hours
      • Commish will announce results of bids
    • Once we resolve all bids, we repeat this process again until All GMs are either out of money or out of roster spots.
      • If a GM runs out of money before reaching minimum roster size, the Commish will assign players to them to fill out their roster, likely from the worst players to play for Cleveland since 1980.
    Roster Construction Rules:

You must have a minimum of 25 players and a maximum of 40 players. 25 players will be considered your "active" roster.
    Your active roster must contain:

    (1) Catcher, (1) First Baseman, (1) Second Baseman, (1) Third Baseman, (1) Shortstop, (3) Outfielders, (4) Starting Pitchers, (1) Relief Pitcher, (4) Utility Position Players, (1) Utility Pitcher, and the remainder (7) slots can be filled by any player.

You can have up to (15) players on your full roster, but can only use 25 at a time for games.

Please note, the same player can be drafted/signed multiple times, as long as he played (and has eiligibilty) through multiple franchises. So, for instance, to help him defend his title, PG could draft or sign Octavio Dotel thirteen times.

During the draft, trades of players and future picks, and any other asset - including money for the signing period - can be made. All parties must produce a private conversation and involve the Commish, and all parties must clearly acknowledge their agreement to the trade within they private conversation. The Commish has the ability to veto any trade.

Please Note: Trades can be "imbalanced" meaning one GM may send more players/draft slots than they receive in return, and will simply have to add more players to their roster during the signing period.

You will also have the opportunity to name a "home field" for your games. This can be done at any time during drafting, and need not be unique to your team (that is, two different GMs can pick the same park ... hell, every GM could). You should also feel free to designate a manager, which will have no impact whatsoever on the game. But it's fun. And sometimes your manager will get kicked out of the game for arguing or kicking dirt, and it's much better to put a face to that situation.

    2) Free Agency Period

The GMs will be given 48 hours after the close of drafting to make add/drops to their team. Once they are done, they will post their final roster and team name. Trades can be done during this time, with the same rules as above. Once this phase is done, rosters are locked, and no trades or add/drops can be done until after the first round of games, when free agency and trades will open again. Rosters will then be locked until the All-Star Game, when you can again do Free Agency and Trades, and after the All-Star Game, all rosters will be locked. You can move a player from your active roster (25-man) to the inactive roster (40-man) between any series.

Please note that rosters are locked for the purpose of Add/Drop and Trading except for the following dates:

After the games have been played on Aproids 8th but before any games on Aproids 9th.
After the games have been played on Aproids 21st but before any games on Aproids 22nd.
    Maeby 17th
After the games have been played on June-Lie 11th but before any games on June-Lie 12th

Any Time During the All-Star Break
After the Games on Septinty 11th, but before any games on Septinty 12th. At this point in time 40-man rosters are locked.

Please note - you can only add a player from the same franchise you are dropping a player from, unless you have the signing period cash asset to pay $12 per signing.

    3) The Regular Season

Each team will play every other team twelve times - two sets of two each three game series, one at home and one away. When a set of series comes up, each GM should post their rotation for the series. Then, each GM should post their line-up and batting order for each game of the series. Please note:

    • The Designated Hitter is not in use, pitcher always bats ninth.
    • Your starting pitcher must have at least three days off in between starts
    • There will be some scheduled "travel days" (Posted) to allow you to modify your rotation slightly.
Once all line-ups are posted or 24 hours has passed, the games will be simulated at www.whatifsports.com. The Commish will provide the results and box scores, as well as any exciting/amusing acts from the simulation via a recap. You cannot change your line-up mid-series.

We will stop along the way and play an All-Star Game, too. I just hope Jose Mesa isn't invited back this time.

    4) The Playoffs

Regardless of the number of GMs, the top four teams will advance to the playoffs. The #1 team will play the #4 team and #2 will play #3. Both series will be in a 2-3-2 format. The winners will advance to the championship, which is also in a 2-3-2 format. There will be travel days after game 2 and after game 5 in all series.

In the event of a tie for position, head-to-head win/loss will be used as a tiebreaker. If the teams remained tied:

    • If all teams involved in the tie would qualify for the playoffs and only seeding is in question, the commish shall do a random draw to determine seeding
    • If one (or more) teams involved in the draw would not qualify for the playoffs, the commish shall institute as many one-game playoff games as needed to break the tie (i.e. if there are two teams tied, we need one game. if there are three teams, we need two games, with a head-to-head ranking or random draw to select which team gets a "bye", and so on ...).
    5) The Championship Parade

The winner of the championship game will be given a parade in his honor, with the mayor blocking off much of downtown. Or, well, Game winner VIPship and colors for a week.

But, before we get to any of that, we need to finish the preliminary phase. Sign-ups!

Once We have our GMs set, we will being. To sign-up, just copy the list and add your name.

Also, @DarthIntegral -- a really excellent list of players. But I quibble...

    1) Dorothy "Dottie" Hinson should be in at Starting Catcher, but Jake can player-manage (or ride the pine).
    2) Steve Nebraska is the best anchor, and Amanda in long-relief is genius.
    3) Also surprised at no Billy "Downtown" Anderson on the team.
    4) Also, a bit surprised at Lou Collins over Jack Elliot at 1B

... I think I need to fire 3-4 more Billy Martins before Bruce gets the top-chair?

EDIT: However, now that you mention it -- I have a killer idea for my managerial staff this time...

12 works better than 10 for dividing up 24 rounds of drafting, if we want to try to recruit any additional new blood

So basically it's a fantasy baseball draft and we can choose anyone from any time with a budget of $100 that we use for 40 players? Well that last year I was here we did an actual fantasy baseball league and I won that so sure why not
