Task #14 - The Art of War

Basic battle tactics: The Art of Battle. A Sith warrior must not only be versed in personal combat, but keen in the broader Art of War. Flanking, Resupply, attacking from a defensive position. These are parts of the overall Art of any Battle. Define the classical maneuvers of warfare, summarize and describe how and when they should be used.

1. Planning
The first essential step in the Art of War.

Planning consists of five key elements when strategizing a battle. These elements are:

Morale- This exists when any assembly is in one accord with their leader. They will follow, defend, and support him and each other, disregarding the cost because they are of one mind, fighting for the same thing as a unit. If morale diminishes, so too will an army's success. Prime example of this would be Carolus Rex, king of 17th century Sweden, and his army of Karoliners. They were a very small army, but they were the catalyst for the power that led to the uprising of the Swedish Empire. Carolus was renowned for his ability to maintain high morale within his troops; they loved him and believed in his cause.

Heaven- This is best described as the conditions under which an army is functioning (climate, season, weather, etc.). A leader must take into account all of these things in order to secure success. Using Carolus Rex as an example once again, in his later years of battle, pressure increased as opposing Russian forces began to imitate the Karoliners' tactics, wearing own both the king and his army and forcing them into unfavorable conditions (freezing temperatures due the winter season) which resulted in their defeat at the infamous Battle of Poltava.

Earth- This is defined as the physical conditions surrounding the army that must be dealt with in any given mission. Distances great and small, dangerous and secure territory, open field and narrow passes, taking into account the chances of life or death for the army and weighing those odds accordingly long before embarking to conquer. A leader must know where danger and safety zones are on the battlefield; where it is safe to rest and regroup and where soberness and vigilance must not be compromised. Likewise, he will also know enemy safety zones are and where the enemy can potentially stage an ambush. All of this intelligence is to the army's benefit, preserving the ranks and conserving energy and resources that might otherwise be wasted if the leader chooses to be uninformed.

The Commander- This does not define the general or any one man in charge as I first thought at a glance over this element. It is a collective set of virtues that link in closely with morale. These virtues consist of benevolence and humanity; uprightness of mind, strictness, and courage; self-respect and self-control; and sincerity. All must practice these virtues to maintain unity and morale within the ranks, for if each soldier is putting these things into practice, the entire army will be taken care of; every soldier looked after by every soldier.

Method and Discipline- This is defined as administration of the army itself. As with most everything in the military, the army must act as a unit, all looking out for the best interest of the troops, practicing self-discipline and inspiring self-discipline in one another.

2. Deceit
A must when the goal is an enemy's defeat.

Deception is an essential element to controlling a war. Keeping the enemy in a position where they constantly underestimate you and your forces will seal victory so long as they are not able to play the same cards with you. Appearing disorganized when you are not; seeming far away when you are actually in their territory; appearing inactive when you have your forces on the move. These tricks lull the enemy into complacency and give them a false sense of victory while their defeat is being orchestrated directly under their noses.

Part of deception is keeping actual plans between tight lips. I believe this is why wars America has fought in recent years have been unnecessarily prolonged. The media exposes our plans and broadcasts them everywhere. I have seen many good plans and strategies for home defense and such brought to attention on the news and thought to myself, it is an excellent plan...but it will never work. Reason being, the media has just exposed those plans to the world. In a sense, the media must be viewed as an enemy of sorts and they likewise should be deceived. Tell them what you actually want the enemy to think, then they will be used to our advantage as a catalyst for false information. Then the plans withheld from their loose lips will succeed. It is none of the civilian public's business to know exactly what their military is doing to defeat the enemy.

Why was the invasion of Normandy a success on June 6, 1944? Historically, it is known as D-Day and there have been many assumptions as to what that "D" stands for; deliverance, destruction, the list goes on, but all are wrong. D-Day is simply a military term intended to conceal the day an attack is to be carried out. No one knows that day except for one man and no one else finds out until the attack is actually underway. This terminology goes beyond days and comes straight down to times as well with terms such as "H-Hour". It is a strategy that was implemented to ensure that the enemy would be taken by surprise. There are also extensions of these terms that are designed to maintain secrecy as well (i.e. D+3, three days after the day of attack; D-5, five days before attack, etc.).

As an example of spewing plans to the enemy, I will target one General Kenobi with my criticism. A confrontation with Grievous during the third year of the Clone Wars ended with Kenobi losing his ship to the droid general. After losing the ship, Kenobi still had a plan to get back at Grievous, but it was a plan that ultimately failed (grievously) for one reason: Kenobi himself exposed his plans to his enemy. Through a looped hologram recording, he literally told Grievous that the ship was rigged to self-destruct. Upon learning this, Grievous fled and escaped with his life and his freedom one more time. Why? Because Kenobi just couldn't keep his mouth shut. As a fan of Grievous, I appreciate Kenobi's foolish honesty, but for his part, that was extremely stupid self-sabotage in the first degree. Though he was able to keep Grievous from accessing military intelligence data by doing this, a lot of his problems could have been ended if he only would have kept silent. He might have destroyed the "monster" from which he was trying to protect the galaxy.

3. Sustaining The Army
The care and feeding of the war machine.

War is exhausting. There is no denying it. However, it is devastatingly depleting to entire nations if resources are not handled properly. When one initially goes into battle, provisions must be brought from the homeland. Thereafter, it is imperative that the army feeds off the enemy. This stretches beyond food and water. This is the spoils of war. Enemy resources of ammunition, weaponry, tools, transport, fuel, anything and everything must be taken to maintain the overall health of one's forces. Returning home for provisions is foolishness as it relinquishes ground gained (two steps forward, three steps back) and to constantly pull provisions from the homeland depletes the nation's resources. Taking from the enemy will, over time, be the slow death of their nation, leading to further conquering as that nation becomes weaker.

In the same token, the often overlooked resource of time is one that must be taken into consideration. Again, war is exhausting; even a short one. Prolonged war because of poor planning hurts everyone involved whether directly or indirectly, right down to civilians not even near the combat zone. Prolonged war first attacks the morale of the people, both the men on the frontline and those who wait back home. If war must be prolonged, greater care must be taken to maintain morale and the General must beware himself of burnout.

Spoils of war must be viewed by the army as a reward. This heightens their will to fight and defeat the enemy if they stand to gain tangible rewards for their efforts, not just as a unit, but as individuals. Food, money, new weapons; all things classified as enemy provisions taken for themselves heighten the sense of accomplishment for the army. While the General is looking at greater long-term gains of territory control and kingdom expansion, those in the trenches need more instant gratification for their efforts as it will inspire them to continue. This holds true in the workplace as well as the battlefield. Be mindful of what makes your men feel like they have accomplished something. They often do not see as big a picture as their commander. The promise of glory alone is simply not enough to drive their vision long term.

4. Knowing Your Forces
Ignorance is bliss death.

It is imperative that the General know his troops; their strengths, their weaknesses; their aspirations; and their fears. With this knowledge, he is more likely to use each man effectively, never putting a square peg in a round hole and thereby crippling his army. If a cog is in the right place, but not the right size to interlink with the other cogs, obviously, that cog is in the wrong place and the machine will not work. Likewise, a leader will cripple his forces if he is not careful in where he places his men.

Five basic types of men make for an effective army when utilized in the right positions; the wise man, who will strive for merit and honor; the brave man, who will gladly seize an opportunity to demonstrate his courage; the covetous man, who has a natural eye for advantages to be taken; and the stupid man, who has no fear of death. This point gives opportunity for a bit of introspective thought; which man am I? To which of these drums would I march to if I were part of an established battalion? I myself am not a hundred percent sure, but it is a comfort to know that even the stupid man has his place of use, should I fall into that category. Better to have some form of purpose than to be utterly useless.

Going back to Carolus Rex of 17th Century Sweden as an example, he knew his men well and was phenomenally good at maintaining their morale. He knew what motivated them and he knew how to fuel their bravery in combat. The Karoliners, as his army was called, all came from a strong Christian faith and fostering this, on top of everything else necessary for maintaining a strong army, was implemented into their daily life so much that pastors accompanied the army to the frontline, regular Communion was a part of life, and the army always prayed before engaging the enemy. Knowing these practices of their faith were important to his troops, the king saw to it that they had these things to cling to and he partook of them himself. As a result, he was not only tremendously respected by his men, but loved by them as well. His sudden and unexpected death plunged his army into perpetual defeat that soon led to the collapse of the Swedish Empire.

5. Knowing The Enemy
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

A wise man of war knows when to attack and when to retreat and lie low. The key to this knowledge is knowing the enemy. Observing the enemy is part of this, but it is not enough. By dissecting enemy forces, much can be learned and much can be accomplished. Divide and conquer is an age-old method that works and there are many ways of doing this. Returning to the element of deception, drawing the enemy into false confidence by feigning retreat is an effective way to turn the tide. The example of the killdeer bird comes to mind when the subject of a false retreat comes into play. This bird draws predators away from its ground level nest by pretending to be injured. When it has led the predator to a satisfactory distance, it takes flight and returns to its nest, often leaving the predator disoriented for a time because it was only paying attention to its perceived prey, not its surroundings. The same tactic can be employed in war, feigning retreat to lure the enemy into an ambush or drawing them into territory you know better than they do. Here I will insert a metal song outlining this strategy, made even more appropriate by Star Wars footage showcasing some of Grievous's best engagements and escapes.

The best tactic for war is to neutralize the enemy without ever engaging them in combat. Knowing how to manipulate the battlefield and trigger the desired behavior from the enemy is the absolute finest art a General can employ into his strategy. In every battle, there is a level of profiling which must be done, taking into account pertinent information such as where the enemy base is located; how many men make up his troops; and his perception of you and your troops. Inasmuch, it is also important to know what the enemy plans to do. Fouling up his plans is an even greater victory than actually destroying him.

Again, I will revisit Carolus Rex and his valiant Karoliners. He fouled up the enemy's plans for years and he did it right from the start of his reign. Crowned at the age of fifteen, he was a strategic genius in war tactics. Upon learning that a young boy had claimed the throne of Sweden, three other countries, Norway, Poland, and Russia, saw easy prey before them, making the fatal mistake of underestimating the abilities of what they perceived to be a harmless little boy. They launched a three-fold attack that began the Great Northern War. His victories over all three countries spurred the tzar of Russia to attempt to sue for peace, an act which Carolus rejected, claiming he would never be found guilty of starting an unjust war, but neither would he end a legitimate war except by the defeat of his enemies.

Sweden as a nation was on the defensive due to three countries wanting to overtake it, but Carolus countered by taking the offensive and his strategy was such that he could secure victory every time despite being faced with armies up to three times larger than his own. The tactics of the Karoliners were extreme and required the highest level of courage. Armed with pikes, rapiers, and bayonets, they were instructed never to shoot until the whites of the enemies' eyes could clearly be seen. This tactic placed them repeatedly within medium range of enemy fire, but they were not to return fire until they got within the designated proximity. The fact that they would get this close before attacking often intimidated the enemy to take flight before ever engaging in combat. Utilizing this tactic, the Karoliners could effectively scatter the larger forces and pick them off one by one. This genius and daring method was strategized by Carolus Rex himself and he was almost always on the front with his men, leading by example in extreme fearlessness that in turn put extreme fear into the enemy. It was said that he and his men knew no retreat; they would either attack or fall.

What is known as a shock tactic was primarily used by the Karoliners. They were told to march smoothly and slowly straight into enemy fire which would begin when they were roughly one hundred meters from the enemy lines. They would not return fire or attack until they were roughly fifty meters distance, at which point they would open fire. Two ranks to the rear of the battalion would move forward and fire a volley, then return to position with swords drawn, after which the two front ranks would open fire for a second volley. Still closing in as they did this, they would initiate a charge at roughly twenty meters, but by the time they charged, their enemies were already demoralized and scattering due to many ranks being felled from the close range firing. Armed with pikes, bayonets, and rapiers, the Swedes would rush in. It should be noted that pikes were used offensively by the Karoliners and this further instilled fear into the enemy because of the reach of the weapon, but far more than that, the enemy feared the unearthly morale of the Swedish army as they had calmly withstood their fire from the start. The shock tactic of marching into enemy fire was a huge advantage for the Karoliners. Firing prematurely and ineffectively, the enemy inevitably had to stop and reload. During the distraction of reload, the Karoliners were able to return fire and downsize the opposing ranks considerably before hand to hand combat was initiated. This is how the army three times smaller than its opposers was able to emerge victorious time after time.

6. Battle Formations
From Vision to Reality

The most glorifying achievement in the battlefield is to foil the enemy's plans. This goes beyond simply thwarting or sabotaging them. This is a highly detailed skill and one that has already been demonstrated by the story of the Karoliners, but deserves more in-depth explanation.

Foiling the enemy's plans first consists of knowing where the enemy plans to attack. However, it goes beyond knowing this and forming defenses accordingly to prepare for the attack. Far better is it to bulk up defenses and move to the offensive, attacking first rather than waiting to defend against the enemy's anticipated attack. There is no passivity on the battlefield for the General who aims for victory. It is far easier to strike first than to be forced into the knee-jerk reaction of a counterstrike, which leaves more room for mistakes to be made and casualties to be suffered and also gives the enemy room to manipulate the battle.

Referring to my character, Grievance Vexx has a tendency to wait for his opponent to make the first move in a fight. While this is not the wisest strategy he can use in a duel, it does have its merits due to the nature of his character. He already knows that new opponents will anticipate him to behave like a droid in combat and so he lures them into this trap and then exploits their foolishness by taking advantage of the opponent's underestimation. Grievance has yet to face the same opponent twice in a truly hostile duel, but he will change his game when this opportunity presents itself. Attacking is the secret of defense and defense is the planning of the attack.

7. Own The Endgame
Be offensively defensive.

In conclusion on this subject and my possibly drawn out and extensive study on it, navigating the battlefield is a balancing act in which one can neither be all offensive or all defensive. One must be the perfect blend of both to secure victory, knowing the enemy as much as one knows himself.

Careful planning and discretion is required to secure victory. The art of war in its most perfect form is to conquer with ease and make no mistakes, for if one makes no mistakes, he is conquering an enemy who was already defeated before the battle even started.

Perfect balance of offense and defense is maintained through both direct and indirect attacks. Fluctuating between the two, there is literally no end to how much and how often attacks can be launched and by way of fluctuating between the two, one can quickly exhaust his enemy and conserve his own strength to continue exhausting the enemy. In a sense, the art of war can be likened to Form II in lightsaber combat, which is designed to spend the opponent's strength and exploit their weakness while the user of the form is able to conserve energy and outlast even the strongest of duelists in endurance, providing said user makes no mistakes. I think this underlying similarity is why I favor Form II above all the rest. In war, outlasting the enemy is actually of greater importance than destroying him. There is far more honor to be gained in outwitting him and shaming his plans and skill as a leader, letting him live to see his shame.

To close, I will touch on General Grievous in battle. Common perspectives view him as a coward because he retreats, but is he really being a coward or is this simply his way of shaming Kenobi and the Republic? His habit of retreating repeatedly frustrates Kenobi every time and this alone is part of the art of war. Keeping the enemy irritated and flustered by consistently thwarting his plans is a large part of defeating him. Notice Grievous always waits until it looks like he's had it before he will fall back and retreat. This is not cowardice on his part, but a deliberately intentional game. Technically, during the Clone Wars, Grievous won most of his battles with the Republic. After all, their goal was to capture him and "bring him to justice" and those plans were thwarted every time by his deliberate retreat, so essentially, he was able to win without extensive fighting.

Breaking the will to fight among the enemy;
Force them to hunt me.
They will play my game and play by my rules.
I will be close, but still untouchable.
No more will I see suffering and pain.
I will run; they will hunt me in vain.
I will hide; they'll be searching.
I'll regroup, feign retreat. They'll pursue.
Coup de grâce.
I will win, but never fight; that's the art of war.

Your followup task is "Belief". How does one categorize belief? Is there some higher force believed in that when pursued can lend itself in the most subtle of ways to instill a belief in those who fight, driving them to victory despite the odds or circumstances?

And this followup challenge drives me straight back to the Karoliners. Honestly, there is not enough written about this small army to satisfy me. What remains consistent in all of my research of them is their unified belief. Sweden was a part of the Protestant movement breaking away from the tyranny of the Catholic Church. As stated previously, the Karoliners were devout Christians and they believed God had blessed them to maintain their freedom. By extension, they believed thatGod helped them win theirbattles, using them aschastisement upon theirenemies.

There is no greater demonstration of common faith in war than these forgotten warriors of Sweden. At the time of the Swedish Empire, other nations' armies had changed with the times, putting away melee weapons in favor of firearms. Russia, Norway, and Poland were ruthless with their massive armies and smoking guns. Then along comes this tiny army from Sweden armed with pikes, bayonets, and longswords. There is an old saying, "Never bring a sword to a gunfight." I would assume the Karoliners never heard that saying. The odds don't get much worse.

In order to overcome their own flight instinct when faced with these odds, the Karoliners had to have a faith that far exceeded their fear of death and that is precisely what they had. An extraordinarily rare breed of courageous soldiers, they did not need tangible rewards to motivate them. They marched into hostile fire for three things: their God, their king, and glory. They believed that, live or die, it was God's will. They fought like they were forever on their way to Heaven. If they died, such was their reward; a thought that effectively kept their fear at bay.

They also believed their king, from the time he took the throne at the age of fifteen, was lead by God. Legends rose up out of the Karoliners' beliefs until even their enemies believed a greater power stood behind the small army of blue and gold. However, such great faith can swing both ways. When Carolus Rex was shot and killed at the age of 36 in Fredrikshald, his dream died with him. Referencing your quote by Shimbun, Carolus was infinitely strong in his role as their king and commander and his unexpected death was a powerful blow to the army. Shaken by the loss of their beloved leader, the Karoliners believed God was punishing them for whatever personal sins each soldier may have committed. While their faith in God remained, the belief that He was punishing them was demoralizing and they completely lost their heart for war, thus they were driven to scatter and retreat in an unforgiving climate that snatched them away one by one through deathly cold temperatures, starvation, and disease. Even still, somehow the remnant of these brave soldiers were able to carry their dead king back to their fatherland to be laid to rest with honor.

Accept a PP from me, as well. The Art of War is one of my favorite books ever. Sun Tsu was brilliant and would be to this very day.

I'm curious. I thought about something the last time I saw ROTS. Grievous thought Dooku was in charge. But Dooku was taking orders and direction from his master: Palpatine. Grievous in his backstory has always been described as a brilliant tactician. Yet, his brilliance, by design, were being undercut by the Sith. How do you think your hero would have felt and reacted if he knew the truth of the matter?

Thank you, high lord Serapis. *bows respectfully* Love the Art of War and its timelessness. There is a lot of wisdom to gain from it and apply to everyday life and dealings with people and circumstances.

Regarding the subject of Grievous and the sabotaging of his abilities, I think knowing the truth would have spurred him to fight back. He certainly would not have flipped sides and joined the cause of the Jedi, but I do think he would have bucked any further control from the Sith. It's inevitable that he would have been executed as a result, but given what is written regarding his character before he was made into a cyborg, I just don't see him taking the truth passively.
