The two Chinese actors in Rogue One

With the relative success of The Force Awakens' release in China, awareness towards the Star Wars franchise by the more Western-exposed younger generation there could not have gotten a better start. And Rogue One is capitalizing on this by including not one but TWO leading Chinese actors in that movie, set to be released in December this year.

We have Donnie Yen of Ip Man fame (he's got a Boston accent when speaking English, by the way, having grew up there),

As well as renowned actor-director Jiang Wen, who acted in the critically acclaimed "Let The Bullets Fly" (2010).


Which means that there is high chance of Rogue One becoming an even bigger success in China than TFA, thanks to the presence of these two big names. But no details of Yen and Jiang's roles are known as of now though (and whether their characters will get killed off or survive until the events of ANH), but these will definitely be revealed later in 2016!

Edit: There has been speculation about Donnie playing one of the pilots or a blind Jedi. He won't have any problem playing a blind Jedi, lol...with the thought of his role as IP Man.

 

As fate would have it, just by chance, I am in the middle of watching IP Man 2 when I saw your thread. Still have about 20 min left. Is Donnie Yen really that fast and skilled in martial arts IRL? If so, those skills could make for some interesting moments for in his role in Rogue One.

 

It will be good to finally see Asians in roles that are bigger than this:

 

Just quietly, I love that guys helmet design...I was a bit disappointed there wasn't more variation in the TFA helmets.

 

Always thought ROTJ should have introduced an awesome Asian rebel that was like the Captain of the Strike Team for Endor...

 

Maybe an Asian equivalent of Poe Dameron, piloting an X-Wing... With yours truly accompanying him in a fight against the Empire!

Just watched Yen in the Lost Bladesman again. Looking forward to seeing him and Jiang too.

 

He was darn good in Ip Man also (the man's most iconic character)... Especially in those end fights with the foreign baddie - the Japanese general in Ip Man and British boxer in the sequel.

But let's not forget that Donnie is a very versatile actor who can even star in a comedy movie (some Hong Kong film released for Chinese New Year a couple of years back)!

there have been asians in sw but it will be good to get some asian main characters.

 

Man, those guys from The Raid were wasted...

 

They were pretty much the only TFA-related thing I liked, and I haven't even seen The Raid.

Man make msure to watch Raid 2 as well. It is even better than the first one. The whole final act of that movie, with the car chase and the fight through the hotel are incredible!!!. Also the fight in the prison yard.
