in the OT maybe Harrison Ford, though at the time I don't know that he was considered an a lister

in the PT I don't think Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, or Liam Neeson were considered a listers, Sam Jackson maybe but he played a supporting role

in the ST only maybe Oscar Isaac could be considered a list at the time

ok, but he is also a supporting character, is there anything at all to suggest that his casting affected the box office?

the point is that you don't necessarily need these big names to get people interested in star wars, I would further add that if you are banking on name recognition over story quality that you are not focusing on the correct aspects that make for a good film

A lot of people (both in the general audience and in the cast and crew that worked on it) gave Star Wars a lot more respect / benefit of the doubt because Alec Guinness had agreed to be in it. So I would think that at least helped its box office, at least in the beginning before word of mouth started spreading.

Harrison Ford was 100% not an A-lister. Wasn't it said he was a part-time carpenter while looking for acting roles at the time?

And i don't think American Graffiti was the break out role for him.

Ford appeared in six small films (with small roles) before American Graffiti. Star Wars would probably be considered his breakout role.

yes hence the 'at the time I don't know that he was considered an a lister'

my only point was that star wars has not really ever depended on stars to sell to the audience, it's always featured unknown actors in prominent roles

He was fixing Lucas’ door before being asked to read for the role as a stand-in so they’d have a warm body, he definitely wasn’t an A-lister.

Star Wars has pretty much always gone for young unknowns and 'veteran' actors... and personally I think that's the best way to play it. No argument that Alec Guinness is/was a truly great actor, but he wasn't considered 'A list by the 1970's'.... indeed prior to SW that last big film he'd appeared in was Neil Simon's Murder By Death, as the blind butler.

I agree that Guinness wasn’t an A lister as we knew / know them. Instead he’s something better - a respected actor who people associated with quality performances and films. Like an old pro, rather than an A lister. His purpose wasn’t to bring people into the film, but to ground the weird concepts in a sense of respectability and seriousness.

I’m excited for Gosling to be part of this film. I’m pretty skeptical of Levy, but I enjoy most things Gosling is in, and he’s proven his ability to carry a fi. I’m hoping this could smooth over some of Levy’s weaknesses (much like I think Jackman did in Deadpool 3).

Correct, Guinness gave Star Wars credibility, and Gosling does the same thing for Levy's film.

Ford wasn't an anything lister, Michelle Phillips of The Mamas and The Papas saw Star Wars and said that was her weed dealer.

Ok so lets see how many movies we got on the slate now.
The Mandalorian and Grogu, Shawn Levys movie with Rian Gosling, James Mangold Dawn of the Jedi, Rey's New Jedi Order movie, Lando standalone movie, Filoni's big crossover movie, the next big Trilogy that will have Rey in as the Obi Wan character to new young Jedi characters. Thats 6 different Movies and a Trilogy thats connected to Rey's movie. 9 movies together. Planned.

We only have two more shows left in Andor season 2 and Ahsoka season 2, Skeleton Crew season 2 is uncertain. We probably get few more show announcements, the next animated series and live action ones. I am hopeful for a show that takes over from The Acolyte. Maybe some new games as Jedi 3 is ending with Cal Kestis soon. Will they continue the Jedi games with other Jedi? I think we might get a full anime canon show with celebration bein in Japan.

Yep. Guinness gave Star Wars the kind of old school gravitas that directly fed into it being a fantasy epic that felt old but very new.

I honestly think they are just going to let the books and comics finish off the High Republic storytelling. As that seems to be where it's main audience is anyways and where the people that understands the era best are telling stories.

Headland really just told a prequel era show set a hundred years before the prequels.

I still think somewhere down the line we will return to Qimir and Darth Plagueis. Osha and Mae will be written out of any future. The High Republic is its own thing and any story post The Acolyte will be prequel era.

I honestly think if it wasn’t for Guinness (or really, just the character of Obi-wan) Star Wars wouldn’t have caught on as much.
