Since Episode 7 is now known as The Force Awakens, I was wondering if it's possible that Disney/LFL may indeed market the spin-off films without using the Star Wars name, as to prevent confusion between the saga films and the standalones

Do you guys see this as a viable option? I'll give examples of potential titles

    "Dagobah" (Yoda)
    "The Kessel Run" (Han Solo)
"Dark Lord: The Rise of Darth Vader"
    "Kenobi"

Do you think they'll need to use the Star Wars name for brand recognition or will they be able to use familiar events, names, planets, etc. from the Star Wars mythology to market the films?

Just wanted to know what you guys think. Thanks.

Iron Man's movie was simply called "Iron Man" so maybe Boba Fett's movie could simply be called "Boba Fett".

We started this discussion in the VII forum, and some suggestions were as followed (most are mine):

    Han Solo Movies:
Han Solo: The Kessel Run (or Han Solo and the Kessel Run, mirroring the Indiana Jones titles)
    Han Solo: Rogue and Ready
    Han Solo: The Space Smuggler
Han Solo and the Sabbac Rebellion
Han Solo and the Freight Pirates

    Boba Fett Movies:
    Boba Fett: Infamous
    Boba Fett: The Bounty Hunter
    Boba Fett: The Last Mandalorian

    Obi-Wan Movies:
    Obi-Wan: Exiled
    Obi-Wan: Lost In Space
    Return of Obi-Wan
The Kenobi Chronicles (my personal favourite)

    Yoda Movies:
    Yoda: Legendary Jedi
    Yoda 2
    Yoda 3

And here's a few others (and some less serious):
    Darth Maul: Born Into Darkness
    Captain Panaka: The First Decoy
    The Emperor's New Groove
    Princess Leia: Throne Hunter
    Chewbacca: Wwrrrrwwwaaghghgh
Qui-Gon Jinn: The Worst of the Jedi
    Quinlan Vos: Jedi Survivor
    Jango Fett: The Clone Father

    I really like:

Han Solo & The Kessel Run
Boba Fett: The Last Mandalorian OR Boba Fett: The Bounty Hunter
    The Kenobi Chronicles
    Darth Maul: Born Into Darkness

I also think they should make a movie called "The Jedi Purge" or "Purge of The Jedi" about my idea for a movie where Vader & Maul hunt down Jedi separately until they meet up in an epic duel for Sith supremacy at the end. And then maybe that could lead into The Kenobi Chronicles.

I believe the spin offs will be titled Star Wars: Subtitle ala Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That's why I think that was one of the reasons they took the episode number out of the Force Awakens title, to have it synch up name branding with the non-ST movies they're making. It'll all just be Star Wars: Subtitle from this point out. Brand brand brand!

^Which is a really bad idea, because the spin-offs might be mistaken för being part of the episodic saga. But enough about that. We still don't know how they'll be presented. Another possible outcome is that the spin-offs will be titled "Star Wars Stories: Subtitle" or something like that.

If the trailers all start with "A Long Time Ago In A Galaxy Far, Far Away..." and use "Star Wars" fonts and blare obvious "Star Wars" music and show obvious "Star Wars" imagery they just might be able to convince people that these are new & different Star Wars films.

Agreed. I think the spin-offs, for the sake of not confusing the average movie-goer, should go by another naming system. I say kick out "Star Wars" from the title, get out of the normal naming conventions and just name the movie after what it's about. If it's about the adventures of Han Solo, then call it The Adventures of Han Solo. The simple Kenobi Chronicles mentioned above even sounds awesome...concise but awesome. Along those lines, produce the spin-offs with a completely different style and flare - no need for an opening crawl, no need for the conventional Star Wars fanfare, no wipes! Get down, dirty, and modern.

I also think it's a great idea to cut the opening crawl from the spin-offs. Will be a very interesting twist, too. It will bring something new, bold and fresh to the world of Star Wars. It will feel like something apart from the episodic saga, which I think should be the point of a spin-off. In my opinion, I never really liked to have an opening crawl in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

    I can see that.

    Kenobi: The Mandolore Assignment
    Kenobi: Chronicles of a knight.
    Yoda: Origins
    Ventress: Dark Jedi of Dathomir
Palpatine: The rise of an Emperor
Force of Darkness: A galaxy divided (The galactic Civil war between rebels and Empire)
Dooku: Fall of a Jedi rise of a Sith
    Darth Vader: The Dark Times
The Emperor's new clothes. (An all new animated Disney movie)
    Jim Henson's Yoda
lol just kidding about the last two.

The episodic movies of the ST will still have the episode number in the opening crawl... they just won't have it in the marketing name. So the same as TESB, ROTJ, and SW (ANH) in its re-releases. So I think that will be enough to make them consistent with the other episodic movies, and not too confusing for people. Therefore, I still think and hope that the Spin-offs will retain the Star Wars name, as in the "Star Wars: Blah Blah Blah" naming convention. But I do think that they should not have opening crawls.

Plus, they may actually hire people who know how to advertise. If they go such a route, these advertising specialists may know a trick or 2 that helps the mindless drone masses comprehend that some films are part of the same story while others are not directly related. Hopefully, they will opt to hire people to advertise these films.

Blue Harvest - A film dealing with the discovery of the force in an ancient world caught in the midst of feuding between various war lords. Focus on various men and women from all walks of life who are drawn to a mysterious planet in an uncharted part of the galaxy. Go over the discovery of the force to the establishment of the Jedi Order leading to the eventual birth of the Old Republic.

Darth or some other equally stupid darkness title - Plaugeis film. Start off with a story of the first Sith, cutting out all of the Lord of the Rings Evil Race stupidity of the EU. Cut to a chronicle and study of the life of Plaugeis, effectively in two parts: From his birth to his rise as a Sith Lord and killing of his master, to his taking up of Sidious as an apprentice and eventual death at his apprentice's hands.

Among other things, Disney also bought the brand name "Star Wars" so damn skippy it's gonna be on the title of every one they make. If it's confused with an episodic installment, they may see that as a benefit. "Ahh! New Star Wars movie! Gotta go!" says person who doesn't know or care if it's a proper "episode" or not. Just the name Star Wars hopefully sells tix.

I'm not very fond of the way they're using a full blown Star Wars logo with a tiny "The Force Awakens" in the middle. I'd have preferred a much bigger episode title in the logo.
It just struck me, though, that they might be planning to have much smaller Star Wars logos in the spinoff titles, kind of like the original TESB logo, to give off the feeling that they're not major saga installments.
