Top 5 Tracks From Each Star Wars Film

TPM

1. Droid Battle



Possibly the most fast paced 'combat' track Williams ever wrote, I just love the frenetic pace of this track, and the part where it intertwines with Duel of the Fates

2. Escape From Naboo



Another great action piece (TPM seems to have all my favourite action), and it was reused in both subsequent Prequels too.

3. The Droid Invasion



The first intro to the Trade Federation march, fitting perfectly over the landing scenes.

4. Anakin and Group to Coruscant



Starts with one of William's suspense style cues, before leading into a nice quiet rendition of Anakin's theme. At the arrival at Coruscant, the blaring theme is reminiscent of the arrival at Cloud City, and there's a nice underscore as Anakin is left adrift among all the political talk.

5. Watto's Deal



One of the subtle quiet tracks which TPM excels at, creating a soothing backdrop to Shmi and Qui-Gon's discussions of Anakin's past and future, and a really nice use of the force theme.

Honourable Mentions:

Take to Your Ships: Just a really catchy positive tune, famous for being the level end screen of Lego Star Wars (and Clone Wars).
The Gungan's March: Both the film cue and the unused variant are really great at building the atmosphere over the foggy entrance of the Gungan army
Duel of the Fates: How could I not mention this, one of William's most famous tracks, scoring the duel perfectly.
Droid Fight: The first battle track of the PT, playing over Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's dispensing of the Battle Droids and dealing with the Droidekas
Anakin is Free: Just so relaxing and beautiful, while also containing a hint of melancholy.

TPM's soundtrack is overall my favourite of the series in general, with excellent action pieces, and lots of soothing quiet moments that are just done so well. I always have a hard time 'describing' music as such, but I just think TPM is amazing. More to come from AOTC soon.

 

Well, since it's been a day since the last post, I'll move on to AOTC.

1. Yoda and the Younglings



Probably the nicest, most relaxing piece of music ever composed by John Williams. It's just impossible to feel un-soothed by it. There's a lovely opening cue as R2 gets food for Padme and Anakin, and soft version of Across the Stars (the second use of the theme in the film). Then there's a sweet version of Yoda's theme, followed by a quiet choir over the Youngling's search for Kamino. To end it all, we have a rousing version of Across the Stars again as Anakin and Padme arrive at Naboo. Just magical.

2. The Meadow Picnic



Ok, it's another relaxing track, what can I say, Williams writes really relaxing music (AOTC is probably the SW score closest to William's work on Harry Potter, especially in this track [Not to mention Chase Through Coruscant, which is directly used in Chamer of Secrets ]) The soaring version of Across the Stars in the centrepiece is so majestic, and the build-up is really great.

3. Love Pledge and the Arena



The best action track from the film, intended for use over the Arena fight with the monsters, sadly mostly dialled back in the final film. It's a shame they didn't just shift the action part of the track to when the Jedi arrive, instead of using all the reused TPM music.

4. Shmi's Funeral



One of the saddest tracks in SW, underscoring one of the most heartbreaking scenes. It gets a bit more uplifting once R2 arrives to continue the plot, but the first half just feels like... it feels like it's grasping for a sweeping score, but can no longer make it, due to the tragedy. Hope I explained that Ok.

5. Chase Through Coruscant



A very repetitively catchy central beat to this one. The opening starts of tense, then we get the full action the film's been waiting for. The use of electric guitars (unused in the final film) fit really well the style of the noir chase being evoked.

Honourable Mentions:

The Duel with Count Dooku: A really restrained final duel piece compared to TPM or ROTS, relying on lots of light percussion (a repeated motif in AOTC). The subtle lack of big orchestration suits the more pared back duel really well.
Approaching Kamino: The Kamino theme is great, very otherworldly for Obi-Wan's trip. The motion of the music fits very well with the storm backing.
The First Kiss: The opening of this track is really beautiful, almost like it's out of a different score entirely, capturing the essence of the Italian beauty of the Lake Como villa used in the scene.
Darth Tyranus and the Secret Marriage: There's a really great, deep version of the Emperor's theme, followed by a really atmospheric section with a solo femal vocalist in this track, really nailing the feel of Dooku's trip to meet Sidious.

AOTC is my second favourite of the SW soundtracks, with really atmospheric suspense, soothing romance, and some really epic action.

Edit: Also, is anyone else gonna post their favourites? I know there are loads of films, but I can't be the only one.

It's interesting, but I think that all of your AOTC faves bar Yoda Strikes Back are re-used tracks from TPM.

 

ROTS time:

1. Battle Over Coruscant





Yes, the whole 8 minute section from the film's beginning, covering War Drums, Boys Into Battle, They're Coming Around, and Get 'Em R2. Boys Into Battle is probably my favourite section, with the militarised Force theme meshing really well with the deep drums (why the drums weren't present on the official album is a mystery to me).

2. Anakin's Dream



One of the many quieter pieces covering ROTS middle act, this is probably the one that I enjoy the most. It starts off both very innocent compared to what's to come, and yet still distinct from the grand operatic romance of AOTC. The sad, last use of Anakin's theme at 2:10 is really great. The ending's a nice transition piece too.

3. I am the Senate



The duel has a very nice central beat to it, with the Emperor's theme woven nicely into it. The part where Mace is thrown out the window is suitably dark and epic.

4. Enter Lord Vader

The Mustafar themes in this track have a lot of oomph, particularly when Anakin arrives at 2:22, and the War Drums return from the opening. The drums were cut out of this track too on the album. Again, why was this?! They add a lot to the themes of the soundtrack, tying in Anakin's prior 'heroics' at the start with his 'heroic' defeat of the Separatists.

5. Arrival at Utapau/Riding the Lizard

One of the few happy themes in ROTS, fitting well with Obi-Wan's arrival at the bright planet of Utapau, while also fitting with the tense conversation with Tion Medon. There's a nice underlying sense of menace in it, while the Magnaguards watch from above. The music for Obi-Wan riding to Grievous works great too, it has the same synergy with the action that the Kamino music did.

Honourable Mentions:

The Elevator Scene: Grievous' theme gets it first use, mostly cut out of the film, but it sounds great. The unused music for the action in the Elevators is really nice too.
The Death of Dooku: The duel music is really fast paced, and it takes a dark turn when Dooku is down on the ground.
Padme's Visit: The variation of Anakin's Betrayal here is arguably more emotional than the original version.
Heroes Collide: While I'm not the biggest fan of Battle of the Heroes, the opening of the duel is faster paced, and works well in paralleling the two strands of the duel.
Palpatine's TV Set/Big Pitch: Really great orchestra ambience and sinister atmosphere.

Overall, ROTS is a step-down from the first 2 PT. I often feel a bit worn out by the end, particularly from the end of the big duel onwards. Still, I think there's a lot to like, especially in the first half, which starts off with a lot of action before settling into a lot of suspense and mood tracks, which I really like.

I can’t name 5 from Solo, but the Maurader Arrives was very good.

 

I can't do this, as I have renamed many stupidly named tracks, so you all would have no idea what some of them are... LOL!

However one thinks of the film, TPM is one of the best-scored SW films in the franchise. I would probably rank it #2 or #3 behind ANH and TESB. I attribute that to Williams coming in with fresh ideas after a long absence of dealing with the franchise. "Duel of the Fates" is the most iconic SW theme outside of the classic ones established by Episodes 4 & 5. Introducing choirs and percussion expanded the orchestration immensely. In contrast, I just don't feel the same way with ST music. I think dealing with shorter deadlines is causing JW to "Phone It In." Yeah it does a great job serving the scenes -- Williams is a veteran, after all), but nothing stands out as its own iconic piece of music.

I'll admit, this one's mainly just for the sheer nostalgic rush I got when the Star Destroyer appeared accompanied by the ANH Death Star theme. While the constant re-using of TIE Fighter Escape has gotten pretty galling, this track features probably the best version of them all, with a nice counter beat to add to it.

2. Meet Han


I like the quiet music over the text 'crawl', and the part where the main theme plays over the title card is fist-pumpingly awesome.

3. Chicken in the Pot


Just a nice bit of source music, that got a big laugh when the alien singer was shown.

4. Flying with Chewie


Mainly for the second half that plays over the arrival on Vandor, a very soothing and yet sweeping score.

5. Lando's Closet


A big cheesy orchestral track that perfectly fits the tone of the scene. The title's hilarious too.

An honourable mention to Enfys Nest's theme, sprinkled throughout the film, I was really into the big chorus.
