Leader-1 was an F-15, not an F-14

Opening metallic-esque music is badass. Radio chatter underscores with sounds of engines starting up. Shadows of planes, engineers, and that red/orange sky dominate the screen. More color enters the scene and "Highway to the Danger Zone" kicks on. Goosebumps.

 

Red Star Yellow Circle on the Bogey. Google search: communist symbol. Communism bad.
They keep saying MiG. Google search: Russian fighter aircraft made by the MiG company. Double check - communism is the enemy.

Missile lock needed. No firing. Each other are

Cougar is spooked. Merlin can't help him.
Maverick helps out when he should have landed.

BTW, since the opening scene, everyone has been very sweaty. I wonder if it was hot on set or if they sprayed them with a water bottle before every scene.

More "Highway to the Danger Zone" as Maverick and Goose are told they're going to Top Gun program and Maverick rides his motorcycle. I like that this keeps the energy going.

Viper intro. Tom Skerritt is so good. Hope he's in the sequel.

Goose's laugh at Iceman's bad joke is the best. Iceman gets named in the bar scene.

Lots of penis jokes / references so far. Guys busting each others ****s as expected.

Enter love interest. Where did Maverick find a microphone that happened to be hooked up to a PA? Was it karaoke night or was there a band on break?

He crashes and burns. The girl was waiting for someone else.

... why are we live-streaming a hell-goer watching a movie. It's not like it's heels watching Ghostbusters for the first time...

I can't believe "Top Gun" has a 54% critic score on RT. At least it does have an 83% audience score and that's the bucket I'm in.

Side note: I watched "A Few Good Men" recently. Tom Cruise plays Daniel Kaffee - a hot shot, super smart lawyer who settles all his cases outside the court room. His late father was a very well known trial lawyer. So what happens to Tom in the movie? You guessed it. He has his first case to go to trial. He battles with himself if he can do it and what his father would do. He's living in the shadow of his father throughout the movie.

I found it interesting that he's very much playing that same kind of character in "Top Gun". I doubt the writers of "A Few Good Men" took inspiration from "Top Gun", but I wonder if Tom Cruise chose the role because of the similarities.

 

There was also Days of Thunder, Cruise was the best in a fast machine until he was in a crash, lost a friend, and had to overcome his fear to get back in the game. "It rhymes."

Also, the themes were mostly about a young man believing themselves to be the best at something, having a crisis of faith in abilities, and then overcoming at the end -- this still basically happens.

 

Okay, let me rephrase -- you don't see any movie made after the Kennedy assassination, so how would you know?
