Yeah, easy for you to say. You've never experienced 9 g's sucking the blood out of your brain and compressing your spine, as Mav described repeatedly to Top Gun graduates who ought to know all about it.

    I have a question for @Sarge .

At the start of the film, when Maverick is trying to beat the speed record, he does it in a curve. I can't think of why would that be more preferable to a straight line. Can you explain, please?

The only explanation is Rule of Cool. Some filmmaker decided a curved flight path would look good. Pilots roll their eyes when they see that on the screen, because you're right, it's not preferable, turning reduces speed.

I mean, also at Mach 10 you'd be in Hong Kong in about an hour from New York, so they might have needed to make one turn to avoid someone's airspace, even if flying a N/S polar route.

That's true, but the turn would be planned for either before or after the speed record moment, not in the middle of it.

Yeah, I'd have to check but I thought he turned shortly after Mach 8.5 or so...

Just watched it again today. He was passing Mach 9 (the original scheduled goal of the test) when he started turning, and he was still accelerating past 9.5 when they showed him still coming around past 90 degrees, apparently trying to do a 180. Aerodynamically, that makes no sense at all.

You know, the last few HISHE videos were mildly funny at best, but this one had me ROTFLMAO.

    This was surprisingly good.

It has the usual genre flaws - any command figure will be a colossal arse, screwing everything in sight. But outside of that? It's pretty clever and is probably the best "what happened afterwards?" stories in recent years.

It certainly beats Jurassic Park, Star Wars and Independence Day. (Though the last one of those was not that bad.)

But it also manages to be its own story too. Add in some quite absurdly good aerial sequences, an opening scene that is 80s nostalgia porn and the result is a fun two hours.

My friend gave me a Top Gun: Maverick movie poster she received for free at another movie screening.

I'll probably pick up a copy of the movie on blu ray at some point.
Really enjoyed watching it as it is quite an entertaining film.

The BR extras are quite fun, especially the "right, you signed on to do Top Gun: Maverick, that means learning how to fly, up to piloting a F-18, without killing yourself and anyone else" one.

@heels1785 That is a really good price for it, might have to have that as one of my "dad's gifts" for Christmas as it's within the budget I want the kids to spend on me.

It been on Digital for awhile and other Paramount releases move to P+ rather speedily (Smile is on P+ rightnow), Tom definitely got what he wanted from the releases scheduled, over 6 months to a streaming service is practically unheard of

I watched it at the Theatre and also bought it on digital (that is how much I loved the movie) For me, Maverick was the best film of 2022 followed by believe it or not Prey. I wish that would have gotten a Theatrical release, but oh well. Still enjoyed that as well.

I just saw Devotion and IMO Glenn Powell has redeemed himself from playing Hangman. Not that Hangman was his fault, he couldn't help the way the character was written.

The aerial photography crew was the same people who filmed TGM and they outdid themselves again. The flying scenes were beautiful and believable.

Recent conversation with the pilots who flew the F-5s ("MiG-28") for the original Top Gun.

One of the pilots remembered an interviewer who asked if the pilots were excited to be working with Hollywood stars. He answered, "They're making a movie about us, we're not making a movie about them."
