Tournament - Favorite Fantasy Character - Discussing Nominations!!

That thorn should be in your side. Anything you find stuck in your back should make you consider that your popularity in the Mod-Squad might be waning.

Generally I would suggest looking to see if the series in question attempts to explain the fantastic powers/occurences with scientific theory. Trek and Firefly clearly do this; X-Files and the whole Superhero genre are far more murky. Buffy is clearly Fantasy, but Dark Angel is completely Sci-Fi. Medium I would say is Fantasy, while Scanners is Sci-Fi. I don't know how I would class someone like Batman, who is neither Sci-Fi or Fantasy himself, but deals with both.

 

Believe me, in MS, I always watch my back.

Batman is tough. Because of Batman's nature (Ordinary man, with ordinary abilities), I'd say it's Sci-Fi. Something like Spiderman (Ordinary man, supernatural abilities) would be Fantasy.

It's the tournament host's discretion on what is the final say - so Conor - however I would recommend being harsh when it comes to the cutting floor, mate. Firefly, Star Trek, Battlestar; all sci-fi. There are many characters who are both fantasy and sci-fi, and of course they'll fit into both tournaments held in this forum. However, there's no point to be lenient - fantasy/sci-fi is always murky water, but go for the clear-cut stuff. I wouldn't personally include any video game characters (2ndQuest ) either, as they're not really what the tournament is about.

Lastly, I would suggest for Conor to post a list of the characters he will be including in the upcoming tourney (once he has decided on them all) before it starts. A little review and people's comments are always good. I know that from experience, too. Smoothing out nominations before a tournament begins is always best. But my first sentence still stands that in the end, decisions are up to Conor.

I already know what the cuts are going to be right now. The only cuts I'm still thinking about are the comic book characters from movies and tv shows just because it can be vague with them seeing as they can cover sci fi but also they deal with a lot of fantasy / mystical elements. As for the the video game characters that The2ndQuest nominated, I'm allowing them just because they do have tv shows even though they might not be well known. Once I get enough nominations I will be posting a list of all the characters that will be in the tournament to get everyone's opinion.

I agree with the decisions made so far. Except what's with all these second tier characters this time? You might want to check and makes sure all of the characters are on the A-list, because some of them are from series/movies I'm familiar with, but I couldn't tell you who the heck they are. For the Sci-Fi tourney, they had to be semi-regulars for television and credited for movies.

Anyway, if we decide to include superheroes (I can see them going either way) I would like to nominate:

Ghostbusters is probably more Sci-Fi then Fantasy, but they weren't in the last tourney and are still much more fantasy then some of the other nominees here. Although, if they don't make the cut I won't mind, as long as there's consistency.

 

Ghostbusters I would consider both, but they have enough fantasy (ghosts, spirits, etc.) that they deal with where they'll be let in.
