Breaking News, the airport and bridges have been seized by military, Prime Minister is saying he'll succeed in stopping the coup.

EDIT: State TV seized now too

President Erdogan has been consolidating power and jailing military officials, and starting up a war again with the Kurds for political purposes. Erdogan has also been viewed as making Turkey more Islamist, while the Turkish Military wants to preserve Turkey's separation of religion and state.

I've been to Turkey in July. Who can find the energy for a coup in that weather? Don't they know it's hot? Way too hot for that foolishness.

If the military takes over, how does this impact the fight with the Islamic State?

    Bad for IS, IMHO.

The military is working to preserve the Turkey that was proudly a part of NATO; Ergodan stands against that.

I'm waiting for Trump to weigh in: "Making Turkey great again!"

Having grown up in Pakistan (you guys aren't sick of hearing that, right? :p ), and having seen governments go to Islamism and what secular militaries can do to combat that, I'm kinda siding with the military here,

Yes it immediately works against IS and extremists.

Brilliant media is saying it's just a group within the military in rebellion. Well, that's what a coup usually is dopes.

Lord Vivec, I nominally agree with you here. Turkey was in a state of open terrorism and seemed to be backsliding towards pandering to extremist elements.

It really depends on what happens with the coup now and a restoration of secular government.

Turkey should have chosen better countries to share its borders.

The U.S. is going to wait to see who wins (the military) and side with them. It's not like we have a choice either about which NATO country borders Syria, Iraq and Iran.

Turkey also has the largest military for a European NATO member. The U.S. really has no choice but to hunker down until the smoke clears.

Military is saying the country is now being governed by a Peace Council, all alliances and treaties will be upheld, which will respect the civil rights and liberties of all regardless of religion, with a quick return to democracy and that Erdogan was an enemy of democracy. (Of course that's according to the military's point of view.)

If the alternative is the emergence of an Islamist-sympathizing dictator, yes.

Traditionally the military in Turkey has been regarded as the safeguard of secularism against extremism.

Yeah. That was the deal in Egypt too. Egypt has had mixed results lately, to keep it short.
