Meanwhile our government is beating the drums of war and I don't think the Democrats are going to try to stop them.

Look at the buildup to the Iraq War and then compare it to what's happening now.

 

I don’t think they can. Trump has outfoxed them here; by campaigning directly in Florida with key constituencies the Democrats will need to win not only there, but in Sun Belt states next year, they will force a wedge in the party between the more conservative and interventionalist establishment and the Sanders crowd. How that fracture plays out will be key to winning multiple states next year.

Going to war of course, would be the ultimate distraction. Based on what Michael Cohen has to say, that may soon become a reality. Can’t have his rising poll numbers start to fall again.

 

Venezuela or some place else?

Marco Rubio, who has been posting about why we should go into Venezuela to secure our oil interests, just posted this normal one.

 

Nah, America is uniquely talented at screwing as many other countries at possible in one fell swoop, while Brexit is really about "let's see how much collateral damage we're willing to inflict on the UK and the rest of the world while we Tories do everything we can to stay together in one party". All the screwing that's getting done with Brexit is really of the "sorry chum, I didn't see you there" sort, whereas America's "sorry pal, I didn't see you there" is of the "I totally saw you there and I dare you to contradict me" sort.

Venezuela: or how the USA really don't need to do anything else to watch the fall of a regime incapable of feeding its citizens, but they just can't help themselves.

 

Maduro has proven himself to be a fairly incompetent leader, but so much of this feels like it was torn out of the CIA handbook for nation destabilization.

 

So the Trump administration tried to turn a riot into a false-flag incident? Sounds about right.

Be skeptical of any "incidents" on the Venezuelan/Colombian border.

Wouldn't it be better to simply say Maduro sucks, we don't want him, in addition we want your oil and we ran out of patience instead of constructing ridiculous curveball esque reasons again?

That's exactly what Republicans want. Go in, support the opposition knowing full well it will taint them. Then when people there start to protest the "U.S. puppet" Republicans can go "look at all those anti-American radicals!" and call for more war.

What Democrats need to do is refute the case for war. Even if someone happens to think that military intervention is sometimes justified, that doesn't mean it's justified in this case. Democrats need to say this...all of them. And not in the usual mushy, milquetoast manner, Democrats need to be in all-out opposition or else people will just think they don't really mean it.

 

I would say we should stay out but we are already in it.

 

Staying out comes back to bite you eventually too, just in a different way. There are ugly consequences no matter what you do.
