    Some interesting shapes going on here. Kinda reminds me of the "Don't Tread On Me" flag. 7/10

    Flag of the Holy Britannian Empire

    [image=http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/4/1740-britannia02_large.png]

    Looks nice, but not sure why the vertical bar doesn't have a border. Having red on blue breaks one of the rules of flag design/heraldry. 6/10

    State of Georgia, 2001-2003

    [image=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/us-ga7.gif]

    One of the worst flags I've ever seen. There's far too much going on here, if I wanted a history lesson I'd read a book. I'm just glad it didn't last long. 1/10

    What is this, some hypothetical royal flag for a US monarchy? [face_thinking] It looks OK I guess, not as regal as other royal flags though. 6/10

    Uganda

    [image=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/ug.gif]

    Not so hot on the colours, but look at the birdie! Isn't he awesome? 8/10

    Uruguay

    [image=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/uy.gif]

    I've always loved this one. The colours are light and breezy, and the sol de mayo is an awesome symbol. His clam gaze is reassuring. 10/10

    It's a hypothetical flag, yes. Not very clever, since it keeps the thirteen stripes and all (which I think a monarchy would have dispensed with) but I still think it's neat.

    Here's the flag for my home state, Michigan:

    Keeping the thirteen stripes might have happened, probably quartered with some other design though.

    Some royal banners kept track of all sorts of information, Hapsburg/Bourbon for example:

    [image=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/e/es_rf234.gif]

    Information overload. :p

    State of Michigan

    [image=http://www.thealmightyguru.com/Database/Pictures/Flag-Michigan.png]

    I like the moose and elk, but I'm afraid it loses points for being one of many blue "bedsheet" state flags. :p 6/10

    The offset shield on the Spanish flag gives it some relief from its otherwise unbroken horizontality, as well as some much-needed contrast with the hot colours. It deserves at least a 9.5, if not a perfect 10. Its only discredit is that it's still a bit blinding. [face_hypnotized]

    But our blue bedsheet is special because blue = lakes. Special lakes that you can even see from space.

    From SPACE, I tell you!!!1!

    Props for being the only non-quadrangular national flag in the world. Doesn't have much presence though. 7/10

    Australia

    [image=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/a/au.gif]

    I appreciate what it's trying to do, but it's like they shoved a star into every space that didn't already have one. Add that to the seven pointedness and it all becomes a bit much. I like the simple white colour though. 6/10

    State of New Mexico

    [image=http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/images/u/us-nm.gif]

    One of my favourites. It's simple and futuristic looking. 9/10

    The great debate:

    [image=http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media//40/3940-004-54CB180A.gif]

    Bold and simple, it's been a successful design that's been borrowed many times. The only problem is that they can never quite decide what shade of blue it is. I've seen it go from pale blue to navy blue. Sort it out! 7/10

    Finland

    [image=http://www.33ff.com/flags/XL_flags/Finland_flag.gif]

    Out of the many Scandinavian horizontal crosses, this is one of my favourites. I like the deep blue on white. It reminds me of water and snow. 8/10

    USSR

    [image=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/a/a9/Flag_of_the_Soviet_Union.svg/600px-Flag_of_the_Soviet_Union.svg.png]

    Yes, it's very red. It's hard to separate the design from the political philosophy behind it, but I try. It scores points for being simple, but at a distance the hammer and sickle is lost in a sea of red. 6/10

    Russia

    [image=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f3/Flag_of_Russia.svg/450px-Flag_of_Russia.svg.png]

    It's very European, but I like how it stacks blue and red together, unlike say, France or the Netherlands. 7/10

    Aerician Empire

    [image=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bf/Aericaflag.jpg]

    Never been a fan of vertical bars, and the 3D face is a big no-no for flag design. It makes it very difficult to reproduce. It's probably one of the happiest flags I've seen though. 5/10

    Which is better?

    [image=http://coconutwireless.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/boxing-kangaroo-flag.jpg]
    This?

    [image=http://www.madeinoz.com/800pxd-Flag_of_Australia.svg.png]
    Or this?

    My friend and I managed to "discect" the Union Jack the other day, picking out the crosses from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

    [image=http://www.quebecfirstaid.com/CanadianFlag/britishcolombiaflag.png]

    And this one's rather funky.

    [image=http://www.oramaworld.com/images/flags/4b_300.jpg]

    I like the colours, and it has a nice symmetry. Make the XP a little bigger and bolder and it'd be even better. 9/10

    Is that in Fallout 3? I never noticed it. [face_thinking] Horrible flag though, it looks as mutated as its residents. 3/10

    The Australian one by far. Flags shouldn't look like cartoons. :p

    British Colombia

    [image=http://www.quebecfirstaid.com/CanadianFlag/britishcolombiaflag.png]

    See my criticisms of the British Indian Ocean Territory. Again, there's far too much going on and the waves are dizzying. It's certainly striking, but a good flag should be easy for a child to draw from memory. 4/10

    The 4 Betas stand for: Βασιλευς Βασιλεων Βασιλευων Βασιλευοντων . Happily, now I can actually say I know how to translate that. It's the motto of the Byzantine imperial family: "king of kings, ruling over those who rule."

    It's a great imperial motto, and a great use of inflection.

    It's used well on the flag. If the white carry over letters were removed, it'd be a perfect example of merging symmetrical shapes with meaningful words.

    Zac, the Federation star on the Australia flag has 8 points, not seven as it's for the six states and two territories.

    Hmm, you already did Scotland, which personally I rate even higher. St. Andrew and his crazy cross, you know.

    So what about:

    Why must it be a competition?
