Animated Shorts Visions: The Duel - Discussion Thread (Spoilers Allowed)

Loving it. Kurosawa with SW pacing and magic.

 

wow, quite the start to this project

definitely liked the animation for this one, really curious about the book that ties into this one now

 

Beautiful animations and style. Remind me a little of the rotoscope type animation use in parts of Ralph Bakshi "Lord of the Rings" film. I love the droid wear a hat like the Three Storms in Big Trouble in Little China. The Sith lady was very cool. I was not too sure about her rotary laundry hanger lightsaber.

 

Pretty cool episode.
Also, did you notice TCW sound effects? I thought blasters sounded oddly familiar, especially the heavy repeater one and the sniper rifle. But then they used the TCW Force Choke sound effect, and that one you cannot confuse with anything else

 

The best of all the shorts by far. I'd even go so far as to say it's the best thing to come from Star Wars animation since Tartakovsky's Clone Wars. While it draws heavily from Kurosawa, it feels distinctly Star Wars and anime in its appropriately heightened doses.

 

And there’s a Dug in it.

 

The hundred year darkness might not have happened in this version of the galaxy.

I'd say post TROS judging y the bandit trooper's armor

Does anyone know if they’ll make the Ronin Lightsaber?

 

That was a lot better than I expected. Of course I hated the umbrellsaber, it was a relief when that was discarded. And I wouldn't want to watch that animation style all the time, but it worked for a Kurosawa-flavored story. I'd watch more stories about the ronin even though I hope he remains a figure of mystery; some questions are better left unanswered.

 

I actually liked the Umbrella Saber, it could have been vicious if Rated R, especially when she pulled it out of that one enemy; I had visions of a movie called Cube.

Waking up the next day and after watching most of them, this one tends to sit the longest. I mean there were some others that really resonated too, especially The Village, but this one transcends all in my opinion. The visuals were stunning, the slow build, the timing, the world of it all and I absolutely loved the juxtaposition of the chaos everywhere, especially with fixing the robot and then this Ronin just slow, calm, in control - brilliant.

And did he slip past all of the soldiers because he was slow moving and wasn't noticed? I feel like I got more than I needed but still want more at the same time, this was high quality art.

 

I am sure they are already being made by the lightsaber makers.

 

I am hoping for a light up toy one like the Darksaber.

 

I like it. Even though he had a red sabre, he didn't act like a Sith by any means, he was far more Jedi but not quite there either. I love the mystery of him.

 

Watched The Duel when it went live at 3 AM. Yes, I know canon and timeline is fruitless in this but humour me for a minute

post TROS? Like way post TROS? I only ask because they said something about relics from the war and the repuprosed trooper helmets were both classic Stormtroopers and First Order troopers.

Or it's like pre High Republic or something and trooper helmets just come back in style.

Anyway, pretty badass short to kick it off.

 

Out of the first season, this is the standard, even with all of the homages rendering it not so creative, it was executed so well that its the most entertaining and visually/audibly stimulating. 10/10
