Who do you believe did a better job voicing Sidious/Palpatine in The Clone Wars:

  1. Ian Abercrombie

  2. Tim Curry

I adored Abercrombie's Chancellor voice, and found Curry's slightly jarring. No offence to the later, but it was just too different to his predecessor.

They both had great Sidious voices though. Abercrombie played to his strengths with the subtle machinations of a puppetmaster, yet Curry brought the thunder when it came to the more overtly-Sithy lines of the later seasons.

I still think Disney could persuade the actor for the Emperor from the movies to voice on Rebels. Plus I think the actor would be honored. It looks like he like the story of the movies.

He probably doenst live or work much in California or the USA in general, so it would be difficult recording the lines from across the sea on a semi-regular or regular basis. Plus there is always a question of salary.

Mr. McDiarmid is certainly a fan of the franchise and his character. Given his public words on the matter, there's no doubting that. :)

I think that might be key.

If the Emperor will have limited appearances, then, as with Frank Oz and James Earl Jones, maybe a special guest appearance or two by Ian would be possible?

If Sidious is going to play a larger part in the series, however? It may be that Lucasfilm will have found it necessary to look elsewhere.

I thought that would happen to but the reason it did not was because it would cost a lot and who nows what else.

Curry was put in a pretty much impossible position having to fill the shoes of the beloved voice actor right after he passed away and also had just finished voicing one of Sidious' most impactful episodes with Maul & Savage. Maybe that was part of the reason they went with a veteran who could weather the storm of fan reactions during the transition.

Yes, I also would be curious, Delta-7 and darthzac14, if you would maybe share what it is about Curry's performance that you enjoyed?

Maybe you can give me something new to consider. :)

Curry's take on Sidious is good enough to warrant him portraying the Emperor. I wouldn't want Sam Witwer to voice Emperor Sidious/Palpatine again. He sounded too Russian. I like his other performances better.

He did an Ok job as Sidious. Palpatine's voice is different from Sidious, lets face it we all probably imitate Sidious' voice.

Abercrombie of course. A lot of people didn't really like Curry but I didn't think he was all that bad...

I liked Abercrombie better than Curry, but I have to agree with those that mentioned Witwer. So if I could choose, I'd choose Witwer provided Ian McDiarmid is not available.

However, I think it's very likely we could get Ian to reprise his (voice in this case) role in Rebels. I mean he voiced Palpatine in this silly Angry Birds Star Wars trailer. Why would he say no to something bigger and better like Rebels!?

Well he's not replacing the actor, he's just doing the voice.

    Witwer is no Serafinowicz ..

..but he did his job on the toon adequately enough like Curry does.

I don't think he was terrible. He was all right. He got the tone and other aspects of it right, but the accent was wrong. Gosh. I just found this. Lol.

Tim Curry loves voicing villainous/evil people. Lol. He provided the voice for a demonic-appearing interpretation serpent from the story of Adam and Eve, Hexxus from FernGully, Forte in The Enchanted Christmas, etc. He has a long resume.

Both Tim Curry and Ian McDiarmid have starred in a version of Annie. Tim Curry was Rooster Hannigan in the 1982 movie, and Ian McDiarmid was in a made for TV sequel "Annie: The Royal Adventure."

That begs the question for Curry's Sidious: was plotting against the Jedi "Easy Street?" :p
