So, upon viewing ROTJ again, i got to wondering; what if Jabba had decided to meet with Luke and come to a mutually beneficial arrangement regarding Solo? Since the droids were a gift to "Mighty Jabba", I don't think Luke would've tried to insist on getting them back and risk breaking the deal.

Now, granted, I understand that Luke was definitely prepared for what Jabba's reaction was and expected things to go pretty much the way they did... which is why Artoo had Luke's saber stashed in his head and all. But, what if Jabba had been feeling mellow?

I think Luke knew that Jabba's loathing of Solo pretty much guaranteed he wouldn't be mellow towards him. It was a risk, but Luke played his cards right.

You just got me to thinking what an ill concieved plan it was from the get go.

"You are a Jedi and that is the best you can come up with??" - Lando
"On second thought, maybe if we built a giant wooden badger......" - Luke

Luke was expecting, and didn't get, a mutually beneficial arrangement, I don't think he would have offered the droids if he was. However if that did come about, I don't think Luke would insist on breaking the pact in order to secure the droids back again.

Luke: "I present to you a gift, these two droids"
Jabba" "Sure, I had my last interpreter disintegrated"

Luke's thoughts: "Oh no, I wasn't expected that. Must think of another plan to get R2 and 3PO back"

*A week later and Han and Chewie enter Jabba's palace with a message*

Luke: "I present to you a gift. This smuggler and his Wookie. Both are cocky, arrogant and scoundrels. But will serve you well..."

It was just a scheme that worked. Threepio and Artoo were kind of sent to Jabba's as unintentional emmissaries. Luke knew he'd get them back eventually.

A wise man once said: "Greed can be a powerful ally." Luke knew how Jabba would react to his offering; It was a diplomatic approach to a futile cause. Luke's main objective was to get Artoo into the palace as he probably foresaw the sailbarge scuffle through the force and knew he would need to smuggle his lightsaber in somehow. Jabba was greedy he would never exhange the droids for Solo. Furthermore he would never leave them behind he would always come back for them.

No, I think Luke knew from the beginning that things were not going to be that easy in rescuing Han from Jabba the Hutt. He knew that Jabba wasn't going to let go Han with bargain. So, as a token of his good will, Luke gave the droids to Jabba. Then, since he knew that things were going to get rough by the end, he was going to fight the whole gang, and rescuing everyone, including the two droids.

"... And don't forget the droids".

It is interesting the way he hide his lightsaber inside Artoo's. When he got to Jabba's Palace, he went there not to start a fight, but, since there were no choices, he had to use it.

I'm sure Luke would've wanted his brand new lightsaber back.

Considering Leia got a thermal detonator into the palace, why would Luke need to sneak his lightsabre in? Jabba's palace didn't exactely have a "Check weapons at the door" sign. It was more like "No Blaster, No Grenades, No service". I think everyone in that place except for the dancers were armed.

Luke isn't dumb enough to think Jabba would actually even care about the droids. He just needed to get "his foot in the door" so to speak.

As was pointed out He couldn't just come in with his lightsaber and expect it to be cool.

That's why he planned it the way he did.

But the question you asked was more like what if they did come to an agreement? ( I was getting off topic)

I think that Luke probably thought he could mind trick his way out of it.Which Jabba is seemingly immune to. I'm pretty sure either way he would get them back. It's a bad mess he would have gotten himself into if on the rare possibility Jabba would have agreed.

Luke is just lucky things went the way they did.

Yes, but the guards would have disarmed him before he was taken on board the barge

Actually, I think he was ready to give C-3PO away if he had to. But, not Artoo.
