Fantasy Historical Earth Way Of The Blade: The Fujisawa Arc

The Year is 1260. Japan is in a period of transition. Since the beginning of the Kamakura Period, there is no dominant centralized government in Japan. The land has been divided and is governed in sections by local lords and controlled by their military magistrates, the Samurai. In this era, there are many threats to a Lord's land and the villages that depend on his success: Bandits, rival lords and Samurai, poor resources, and low education. All of these are metrics by which the success of a village, and therefore the Lord, is measured upon. The small village of Fujisawa on the eastern shore of Japan is one such village, ruled by the Lord Tokodai. Lord Tokodai is a young lord, aged 15, who inherited the land from his father. Fujisawa is his only village at this time, with a small population of 40 people. Due to its close proximity to the Capital, Kamakura, trade is rated as good and the villagers are mildly educated. His former Samurai advisor, Uchiyama Takahashi, is nearing death and his replacement is being sent from Kamakura after completing his training and examinations. This is the beginning of the Fujisawa Arc, which will focus on the sustainment of the Village of Fujisawa.​

The Village of Fujikawa - A Safe Zone. Unless Fujikawa is under attack, it is a place where Samurai can regain their HP, buy and sell from their inventories, and pick up side quests that will benefit the village. Fujikawa will be graded by the GM - in-game functioning as the Kamakura Government - on three areas of development and growth:

-Education: The strongest way to improve education is to build a school in the village. Beyond that, every year, assuming that the village is protected, the education will grow naturally to a cap of 25.

-Protection: Building defenses and maintaining the rule of law through stopping crime will keep the protection grade high. A protection grade of 1 means that the danger level is low and 10 being that the village is a haven for banditry and lawlessness.

-Economy: The Samurai, by ensuring an educated and protected population, will allow the economy to naturally grow. The more profitable a village is, the more the Lord is able to pay the Samurai. Later on, as the Samurai visits other villages and establishes protected trade routes, the economy will grow more quickly. The cap for the economy is 100, meaning that the village is an economic juggernaut of Feudal Japan.


These measurements will be monitored and kept up by the GM, allowing players as much involvement as they wish. Should the village fail, the Capital shall annex the village and the Samurai will have no place to call home. In-Game effects of this will mean that the Samurai has no place automatically regain their HP and will become a wanderer, a much harsher gaming experience, but one that the GM will facilitate if a player wishes to go this route.

You, the player, will take control of a new Samurai, fresh from the Capital after completing their examinations. Your Samurai is Level 1 and has no real life Samurai experience. The Level system will be the same as with any RPG: As you gain experience, you will level up and more options and abilities will become available. Diplomacy and Combat will be directly tied to your statistical ability. A level 1 cannot take on 3 level 1s in combat and expect to survive fresh out of the gate and death is a very real possibility. Life-long injury is also possible and will alter how the player experiences the game. Lose an arm and, while you may still be a capable samurai, you will find your combat growth will suddenly have a lower cap than before.

Biography:
Yoshida Oshiro was never one for bureaucracy or the elites of Kamakura. The farce that was the Shogunate was evident to him during his time training to become a Samurai, not that he paid too much attention trying to keep his head down during his studies. It was a dream he had wished to achieve ever since he was a young boy. His father, Yoshida Haru, had taught him the basics from a young age, setting him firmly on the path of the Samurai. His respect grew for his father and that of the Samurai as he would hear tales of their deeds and see the good they would do in the world defending his village from bandits, thieves, and other evils.

In time it would be his turn to take up the mantel, himself being sent on his way to train and become a warrior, but his time in the capital lead to some disillusionment in the young man, seeing the wealth and status of aristocrats and the place of the defenders in relation to them, it created an annoyance in the man's heart, a quiet resentment to those that grew fat and lazy and did no good. His time spent there was not all bad, however, through his fellow trainees, he discovered Zen Buddhism, a practice that he found particularly suited the Samurai way of life.

At long last he was able to graduate his examinations complete as he was sent off to become the guardian of a small village near Kamakura, pleased he would finally be able to do some good he set off, eager to prove himself.

Fujisawa Village, Tokudai Manor

Fujisawa was nothing like the Capital. There were no tall buildings; No stone-paved roads or busy shops. The lack of taller buildings meant that the blazing early summer sun was bearing down directly on the small village and its inhabitants. The air was hot and thick with moisture as noon approached. Sweat beads turned to streams on the brow of the young Lord Tokudai. Seated behind a stream of curtains obscuring the view of them, the Lord watched as the new Samurai arrived and Uchiyama Takahashi met him at the steps of the manor.


Uchiyama Takahashi(Master Samurai - Level 23, Special Ability: Whirlwind Slash, Crushing Blow, After Image)

Uchiyama did not move from his seat as Yoshida Oshiro arrived. The escort, a young boy, stopped and bowed low to Uchiyama-Sama before turning and running off back to the main body of the village. Uchiyama stared at Yoshida before sipping from his tea and stomping his foot loudly. Suddenly three individuals descended the steps and knelt before Yoshida, heads bowed.

One by one they stood and introduced themselves:


Yamasaka Toshi (Samurai Aide - Level 1 - Special Skill: Bargain - Increases the Samurai's earnings by 40% and lowers prices from merchants by 25%)


Aizen Arima (Samurai Aide - Level 1 - Special Skill: Scout - Increases the damage of ranged attacks by 1 and increases the Samurai's intellect by 1)


Kuma Sui (Samurai Aide - Level 1 - Special Skill: Medic - Passively heals Samurai 1 HP per post when outside of combat and grants 1 Special Ability: HEALS Battle Card that heals during combat for randomized amount)

They waited to see who the new Samurai would choose as his Aide.

Yoshida Oshiro
The Saga begins...

The journey to Fujisawa had been short and uneventful, although Yoshida did not mind this. He found the quiet stillness quite soothing. Upon reaching the outskirts of the village he descended from his horse. The proud and strong beast he left tied to a post asking the escort to keep an eye on the horse once they had brought him up to the central manor.

As they walked over to the manor Yoshida took in the surroundings of the village, breathing in the rich, hot, humid air, he was going to be here a while and so might as well familiarize himself with it as soon as possible. He felt the droplets of sweat from his forehead roll down into his eyes, a slight burning sensation piercing into his eyes before he rubbed the sweat out of them The walk would not take long, soon he would arrive at the manor.

As he was introduced to Uchiyama Takahashi he swiftly bowed to the elderly Samurai, being sure to greet him in the correct formal manner, he did not want to leave any bad first impressions after all. He then looked up seeing three aides come out as Uchiyama stomped his foot. They knelt before Yoshida, introducing themselves, not a word spoken afterward. Yoshida understood what this meant, as the new Samurai of this village he was allowed to select an aide to help him in his duties in protecting the village.

His gaze lingered over them all for a moment. Part of him wished he could select them all, he was sure he could use the help, but no he would only be allowed one. Glancing over to Uchiyama he considered how straight to business the man was, no offer of tea or small polite talk, no time wasted whatsoever. Yoshida was not offended by this, not in the slightest in fact part of him respected it. It was clear the elderly Samurai was experienced and wanted to make the transition period as quick as possible, not that there was anything wrong with that.

As his eyes traveled back down to the three of them he gestured to the one in the middle, opening his mouth to speak.

"Aizen-kun I would be honored if you would be my aide,"

Fujisawa Village, Tokudai Manor

Arima Aizen stayed kneeling until the other summoned aides stood, bowed again, and hurried up the steps to the main building of the manor. Arima waited another few seconds, his eyes remaining closed until he was sure that only the Samurai were present. He stood, his eyes opened, and grinned widely at Oshiro.

"Yoshida-kun, you won't regret it. I'm a hard worker! I was a scout for the Capital's Elite Navigation Squad for a decade; I got the best eyes in all of Japan."

Master Uchiyama cleared his throat and a relaxed Arima straightened up, remembering that he and his new Samurai were not yet alone and that there were still customs to observe.

"Oh, right!" Arima nodded and bowed to Uchiyama. "It is time for you to meet Lord Tokudai. I will remain here until you are finished, Lord Samurai."

Uchiyama hobbled up to his feet. The older man's body was covered but the sounds of pops and cracks in his joints, along with him limp revealed that his years as a Samurai had damaged his body forever. Samurai did not live to retire. There was no peace for old warriors. A body without injury meant that a Samurai had not served honorably and bravely. There were many tropes and sayings about Samurai and largely they were true. It was a testament to Uchiyama's career that he was approaching retirement to die in relative peace. The Master Samurai walked up the steps to the main house, saying nothing to Yoshida, but the message was clear that he was to follow closely behind.

There was a table and two pillows. Uchiyama placed his cup on the table and poured Yoshida a cup of hot water and proceeded to make him tea, stealing a glance with a stern gaze at Yoshida, judging him silently. He walked to a corner and turned to face Yoshida as he waited for the man to take a seat.

His voice was smooth and warm, like the sap from a old tree.

"I served Lord Tokudai's father for 30 years. The village, being close to the Capital, is relatively safe, but there is a constant shadow of the Capital. At any point, the Shogun could absorb the village and Lord Tokudai would lose status and it would bring shame on you and all of the villagers. Likewise, other Lords and other Samurai are potential threats, as they will seek to annex Fujisawa due to its strategic and economic position along the coastline. My guard and I bled for Lord Tokudai's father through the previous era's territorial battles to secure this land."

"Every meter of soil that this village is built upon was watered with our blood. Remember this as you serve. Lord Tokudai is young and will need your loyalty, advice, service, and blood for their every ambition. This is what it means to be Samurai."

The shoji doors slid open and in walked Lord Tokudai.

Lord Tokudai Ishina (Lord - Level 1)​

A Woman Lord? This was a well-kept secret as surely word would have spread through the region that there was a Woman Lord in charge of Fujisawa. A 15-year old was bad enough! Yoshida's role here was one that would be more difficult than previously thought. Maybe, however, the young Samurai was prepared for anything. A tougher journey once news got out about Lord Tokudai? Maybe that was just what the young Samurai needed.

"Yoshida Oshiro, how do you feel about your post now?" She asked, clearly expecting him to have a problem with it. Most Samurai would and she was ready with a quick response should her assumption prove correct.

Yoshida Oshiro
Fujisawa Village, Tokudai Manor

Oshiro could not help but give a small smile at the eagerness of Arima. He would be most beneficial indeed, although he did note the use of less formal honorific. Well, he did seem somewhat older than Oshiro, perhaps he just saw their relationship as more mutual rather than senior and junior. Oshiro's smile only grew wider at this, he had no particular problem with it, in fact he properly preferred this way.

The elderly Samurai then cleared his throat, reminding the aide that Oshiro still had business to attend to. As they got up Oshiro glanced over the old man's body, noticing the hobble as he walked. Would this be him one day? An old man ushering in a new generation to take his place? He would be most blessed if he ever reached that point, or cursed depending on how you looked at it.

The two of them entered the tearoom where Oshiro quickly took his seat, patiently waiting as the tea was made for him. The quiet sunlight beaming down on his back, the simplicity of it all, he loved these quiet moments. Although he had the unfortunate feeling they would be far and few between in his future. His tranquil moment became broken as gaze of Uchiyama fell upon him.

Was he judging him?

For what?

He had not done anything yet.

Perhaps that was the point, was it so obvious that he was so green around the ears? As Oshiro clasped his tea, the elder Samurai began to speak on the past of the village and himself. Oshiro nodded in silence, the weight of the responsibility that laid before him becoming ever-increasing clear, this would not be an easy task. As he opened his mouth to respond he the door slid open, Lord Tokudai stepping out. In a moment Yoshida thrust his tea down, spilling part of it over the edge in a somewhat embarrassing fashion as he hastily bowed to his Lord.

Am I really that on edge?

He gritted his teeth as he then looked up, only now realizing that Lord Tokudai was a girl. A small frown edged itself onto his face. This would prove to be difficult. Indeed, the fact that the Lord was only fifteen was an issue as it was, but the fact that it was a young woman, well it complicated things.

"Yoshida Oshiro, how do you feel about your post now?"

Oshiro cleared his thought, thinking for a moment before responding.

"I must admit Lord Tokudai, things may prove to be an issue..." that was putting it mildly he thought, the fact that they had kept it hidden from him as bad as it was, although it meant very few people outside the village knew. "...but I am honored that I may serve you,"

That he did mean, the strong sense of duty was instilled in him, and any reservations he had stemmed more from how others may perceive himself and the village as weak, not in the actual fact that the Lord was a woman.

Biography: Tadashi family was very honored that one of their own had been chosen for the training to become a Samurai. For their family there was no higher honor they could hope, and so upon Susulur this honor and this duty to his family has fallen. This was his role as second son that was chosen for him, and best path for increasing his families standing.

He studied hard in his training, seeing the worth in understanding the Shogunate and bureaucracy or the elites of Kamakura. In these ways he could best secure not only the future for Kamakura, but for his family's honor as well.

When the time of proper studies were done, and he was deemed Samurai there was little he could do. He sent a sealed letter home and began the rest of his life with one small step. Off to a small village to serve as one of their Samurai, with only Nobu as his only guaranteed companion for the years of service that awaited.

 

Fujisawa Village, Tokudai Manor

Uchiyama grunted in displeasure at Oshiro spilling the tea ungraciously in front of the Young Lord Tokudai. Oshiro, in Uchiyama’s eyes, was not ready to be the protector of Lord Tokudai. He was an inexperienced, government bureaucrat with not even the scent of blood on him. What else could he expect, Uchiyama pondered quietly. He would not speak until Lord Tokudai requested that he speak, so in the silence that permeated the air around him, like the mist around one of the great mountains of Japan, Uchiyama just observed with his dark beady eyes.

Lord Tokudai had an air about her that Oshiro would notice more and more as the seconds drew out. The young lord was measured and patient. If Oshiro had never been to the Capital, he may have mistaken her for being innocent and kind. However, the Capital held the deceptive career criminals named politicians and members of the Royal Court; people that could smile in your face while watching their servant stab you in the back. Lord Tokudai’s innocence was compounded by the fact that Oshiro knew nothing about her. No one outside of Fujisawa Village knew that the deceased elder Lord Tokudai had a daughter; further that she inherited all that her father had controlled. This begged the question: Where was the son? The son of the deceased Lord Tokudai? He was no rumor, but he was not here.

Lord Tokudai rubbed her chin and narrowed her focus on Oshiro.

“Takahashi-San has a saying: ‘Service not given in blood is the lowest service that can be given.’” Tokudai nodded to Uchiyama and the old samurai rose to his feet and revealed a piece of parchment paper that he laid on top of the small puddle of spilled tea in front of Oshiro. There was just a name: Kubota Tanami.

“She is a woman, who lives on the outskirts of the village, to the South. Lord Tokudai wishes her to be brought here by the day’s end.”

There was a definitive silence that followed as they looked at Oshiro for a moment. Lord Tokudai turned away from him and exited through the door she had arrived. It was clear what her expectations were; what was not clear was what the punishment would be if Oshiro failed.

Kamakura, The House of the Guard


Shoko (Elite Samurai – Level 16, Special Ability: Defined Arrowstrike, After Image, Rapid Razer Slashes)

“Susulur-San!” Shoko’s sharp, strong voice pierced the air of the House of the Guard, the building on the edge of Kamakura’s West Gate. The House of the Guard was responsible for the defense of the entire Capital and served as the launching point of all newly minted Samurai. Shoko was not the head examiner nor was he technically in charge of any of the new Samurai, he was there more as a tutor and had taken a special interest in Susulur from the time that the young man had arrived. Any man who called himself Samurai knew of Shoko: The Wind Blade. Shoko’s reputation was that of a bloodthirsty, decisive executioner on the battlefield. His nickname, the Wind Blade, was credited to his ability to deal fatal strikes as silent as the wind before his opponents had even the hint that Shoko was present at all.

Susulur had been preparing Nobu when Shoko’s call shook the foundation of the House and all eyes of the crowded building turned to him. Shoko waited until Susulur was in front of him before, from behind his folded arms, he smirked.

“I hoped that one of mine would be chosen. Prepare Nobu for a longer journey. You are taking the Climb.”

Hushed whispers erupted behind Susulur, though the Samurai continued to move about their business, pretending to not hear the news. The Climb – A Journey through the bandit wildlands to the base of Mount Fuji. A death sentence for a new Samurai. It would take weeks and it would be trying but returning to Kamakura was not an option. He was to do as he was directed. Though one had to ask, why him? Shoko had no mercy. It was well known that Shoko had completed the journey twice alone: once as a new Samurai and again during the old wars. His smirk had not faded.

“Susulur-san! You will need a companion!"

Two men entered from either side of Shoko and introduced themselves.

Yoshida Oshiro
Fujisawa Village, Tokudai Manor

Oshiro felt the silence hang in the air, the eyes upon him as Lord Tokudai began to leave the room. His eyes scanning hastily he bowed once more, clearing his throat as he spoke clearly.

"It shall be done Lord Tokudai,"

He rose, taking the small piece of parchment that held the name, it had become slightly damp from being placed over his spill. His mind began to run through the actions and words that had just transpired. The expectation had been laid clearly before him, he was to give everything in service to his Lord, such as he expected. He still was confused as to where the son of the late Lord Tokudai was, had he mysteriously died and they had kept it a secret?

That possibility did not sit well with him.

He quickly cleaned what little spill remained, bowing to Uchiyama, who at this point quite clearly did not like Yoshida, before the young samurai made his exit. The annoyance seared in his mind again at the spilling of the tea, what better way to show how much of a novice he was, bad first impressions never bored well. He gritted his teeth determined to make it up with the successful completion of his assignment.

As he began to leave the manor and came the way he did, he spotted Arima who was still in the same spot as before, the samurai gestured to him to follow, he still held onto the parchment, looking down at it again as he passed it to his aide. The assignment did not seem difficult, but it was best to get it over and done before settling in.

"Aizen-kun we need to find this woman, I know she is roughly to the south of the village,"

As he waited for the aide's reply his mind wandered back to how Lord Tokudai had spoken to him. He was unsure if her innocence was genuine or a guise the young Lord put on. He could not shake the feeling that there was more to this simple assignment than what appeared on the surface.

Susulur looked up at hearing his name called by Shoko. Securing the strap he was working on he patted Nobu gently before turning and moving to stand in front of the Shoko, giving a curt bow of his head. Waiting he listened, he was in a sea of new samurai waiting to begin their services with honor and distinction. Today, today was his day to be called forward.

Nobu for his part snorted lightly at being left merely mostly dressed, but what he heard next made him heartened he had been stopped before he was finished getting ready.
“I hoped that one of mine would be chosen. Prepare Nobu for a longer journey. You are taking the Climb.”

The reason for this was one that made Susulur's own eyes widen and a second bow be given rapidly. It was an honor based on the words of Shoko, but it was an honor that weighed like an anchor about the neck of a swimming man! Shoko had no mercy. It was well known that Shoko had completed the journey twice alone: once as a new Samurai and again during the old wars. His smirk had not faded.

“Susulur-san! You will need a companion!"

He felt relief that he would not be called to go alone as he first had thought based on who was telling him. It was then that two men entered from either side of Shoko and introduced themselves.

"Yogi Kenpaku"

A scout and a Medic. As far as companions went both would invaluable in helping him make it through this trial of deep water alive. One by avoiding and killing enemies at range for his own health, and the other to mend his wounds after fighting. Only this question was not as simple as it seemed, which was not very, for Shoko was not done.

"Unless you wish to brave the Climb as I did…Alone!” Shoko uttered with a slap of his hands together. So he was asking, it was not stated and he was being given the choice, but as honor went if he refused to go it alone, would he show himself as weak and unworthy of great honor like Shoko? Especially when Shoko has so graciously offered for him to follow in his own path!

"Shoko-sama, I am honored and humbled to be allowed to walk the path you've tread. If you have any guidance, I would be deeply honored." he replied in a deep bow. If he was to die, he would do so alone and with the highest honor he could garner. His family would expect nothing less, and would be pleased if he died well to the betterment of the family name.

Fujisawa Village, Southern Entrance

Aizen Arima eyed at Tanami's name on the paper, then squinted, before finally nodding and tucking the parchment paper in his shirt.

"Yes, I know where Tanami-san lives. I am not quite sure what Tokudai-Sama would want with her, but I can lead you there. It is a short walk away."

[Player may now choose their three battle card loadout. This loadout cannot be changed until they have returned to a safe zone. The three available battle cards are ATTACK+1, DEFEND+1, and FOCUS+1]

It was indeed a short walk until they came upon a lone path that led to a small house.



But Aizen, from afar, stopped his Samurai and alerted Oshiro to the presence of a man standing guard outside.


Shinsuke (Brute - Level 1) HP: [O-O-O-O-O-O]

"I've never seen him before. Judging from his armor, he's probably from one of the wandering criminal bands." Aizen said quietly as he knelt behind a tree. He would follow whatever his Samurai chose to do.

ATTACK - Oshiro is faster and has noticed the Brute before Shinsuke has noticed Oshiro. This grants Oshiro a Sneak attack that does not cost a battle card.
TALK - Attempt to speak with Shinsuke. Will initiate an intellect check that will determine the action's success.
FLEE - Oshiro can flee and come back at a later time.

Kamakura, The House of the Guard

"AAAAHHHHHHAAAAAAAA!!!!"

Shoko's laughter felt like it shook the room. Possibly more than just felt... Shoko had a dominant energy about him and he'd thought that Susulur possessed the mind of a scholar. He did, but the choice to take the Climb alone revealed that, as Shoko suspected, Susulur had the heart of a warrior.

"EVERYONE GET OUT!" Shoko's booming voice commanded as the dozens of Samurai and Guards scurried to exit the building. He clapped his hands after the room was clear and then demonstrated each of the abilities he could teach Susulur.


Defined Arrowstrike - A high risk, high reward arrowstrike. On weaker NPCs (Level 3 and below), if the arrow lands, immediately puts the NPC out of commission. Against stronger NPCs and PCs, if the arrow lands, causes damage equal to the user's intellect and causes bleed damage (1 HP per post) for 3 posts. However, the user is unable to attack for a turn after and can only play a DEFEND or FOCUS card.


After Image - Once activated, creates two targets for the enemy to attack (Target A and Target B). If the enemy chooses correctly, their attack damage is halved. If the enemy chooses incorrectly, they are left unable to ATTACK or DEFEND for a turn. At higher levels, After Image can create more target options.


Rapid Razer Slashes - Three sword attacks (at its base level) that do damage based off the speed stat of the user, that all occur within one turn. Will gradually erode an ATTACK and a DEFEND battle card by half each strike and make the defender unable to defend the next turn. Is usable twice in one battle phase.

Sheathing his sword, Shoko folded his arms and grinned at Susulur.

"Susulur-San! I gift you one of these abilities, for you will need to use them strategically if you desire to return from the Climb. You will bring honor and reputation to yourself and your family if you are successful. Are you ready to depart?"

OOC: A Special Ability is a card that is added to a player's loadout. Meaning that Susulur-San still has a choice of what combination of ATTACK+1, DEFEND+1, and FOCUS+1 he will bring with him in addition to a Special Ability card.

 

Yoshida Oshiro
Fujisawa Village, Southern Entrance

Oshiro gave a quick nod to Arima, indicating to lead the way, in his mind he began to run through the possibilities that lay ahead, he had the uneasy feeling he would be trouble. If there was to be such an event it was best to be prepared.

Oshiro's three cards shall take two Attack +1 and a single Defend +1 cards.

It would not take long for them to reach to come to the lone house on the outskirts of the village. Both of them knelt eyeing the brutish man that roamed outside.

"I've never seen him before. Judging from his armor, he's probably from one of the wandering criminal bands."

Oshiro tilted his head in contemplation, taking in a deep breath. He may not know precisely who this man was, but the village was small, and he trusted Arima would know everyone within it. Thus it stood to reason he was indeed a criminal and certainly not from around here. It was his duty to dispatch of the man plain and simple.

With clarity of mind, Oshiro took out his Yumi setting an arrow into it, pulling the string taut as he aimed at the man.

The arrow flew through the air, off to find its mark.

Susulur looked wide eyed at the laughter that filled the space. Reverberating to his very soul, and to shake the dust from the rafters.

"EVERYONE GET OUT!" Shoko's booming voice commanded as the dozens of Samurai and Guards scurried to exit the building. It would take only a few seconds and Susulur had to remind himself not to join in evacuating with the others. He was supposed to be here, and he was excused by a blanket command. Shoko would descend the platform he was positioned upon. He clapped his hands after the room was clear and then demonstrated each of the abilities he could teach Susulur.

One after another the forms flowed in their impressive natures that left him awed and aware of his weakness and the deep honor being allowed to learn any of these, yet alone have a private demonstration. After bowing and humbly accepting to be taught After Image, Susulur took a moment to center himself. "I am ready Shoko-sama." settling his resolution in his very bones.

Fujisawa Village, Southern Entrance

The arrow found a home directly in the Brute's right shoulder. The man stumbled backwards, tripping over the steps, and falling on his behind, cursing in pain and searching around until he found Oshiro and Arima in the distance.

"Pow! That's a helluva shot if I've ever seen one, Yoshida-kun."

The brute scrambled to his feet and began to approach. He drew a sword and approached slowly, in a defensive stance.

Special Ability: After Image Acquired!

Shoko nodded after he taught Susulur the basics of the After Image technique. The young samurai was a bit rusty and he was not as fast as Shoko, but it would suffice for the time they had. Once Susulur composed himself, Shoko would command the man to gather his belongings and follow him out of the West Gate.

[Player may now choose their three battle card loadout. This loadout cannot be changed until they have entered a safe zone. The three available battle cards are STRIKE+1, DEFEND+1, and FOCUS+1]



Shoko led Nobu and Susulur to the Western Perimeter Gate and stopped.

"Trust in your training, Susulur. The way of the Samurai is not just with the Blade. Do not forget to use your head. If one takes a moment to size up their enemy (Intellect Check of opponent's stats and level) some fights may be able to be avoided. There, of course, are those that will fight you and seek to take your life and belongings, no matter what. Be swift in your decision and deadly in your actions. There is a temple along your path, at the base of the mountain, where you will be able to rest and purchase supplies if you make it that far. HA! I look forward to hearing of your completion of the Climb, Susulur-San!"

Yoshida Oshiro
Fujisawa Village, Southern Entrance

Oshiro gave a slow nod, as he reached round to grab his Tachi, unsheathing it as he rushed forward. It appeared that his arrow had inflicted a good amount of harm into the man. His movements were slow, defensive. Oshiro reasoned a series of quick, fast strikes would be what was need to end this threat.

The warrior rushes in, gripping the Tachi tightly in his hands as he swings around, ready to inflict a lethal blow, aiming for across the man's chest.

Oshiro plays Attack (Speed) +1

He felt the air fill his lungs, the quiet sensation before either the familiar sound of metal colliding or the slicing sensation of cutting through flesh.

Bowing he gave simple words in return, "Thank you Shoko-sama! I shall do as you say, and look forward to sharing the tale of my journey when I return."

Turning Susulur guided Nobu out through the gate, choosing to enjoy a nice walk for the fist couple hours and to switch back and forth between riding and walking. This way Nobu would not become upset with his rider putting a harsh pace, but a gentle one considering Nobu was already loaded down with supplies.

Shinsuke's chest spurted blood into the air, a thin mist. A precursor, as the brute stumbled forward a few steps and fell flat. Lifeless.

The time to savor the victory, if Oshiro was the type, was short.

Through the silence of the small forested area, Oshiro and Arima would hear the footsteps descending from the steps of the small cottage. A slender and armored man, holding Kubuta Tonami by her hair, dragging her down the steps, looked upon Oshiro and his fallen companion and his face twisted in disgust.

"The hiring of local guides through this backwoods area; I suppose I cannot be surprised. My name is Raiko and I am here on business for my Lord Jozai Hirashi. This, "He indicated Tonami by pulling her up by her hair, "Is his property and I intend on taking her back. Now, savage, make way before I slay you."

The Climb - Part One

Susulur, after a day of travel, finds that the journey has been empty, and therefore peaceful. At his current pace, he would reach the base of Mount Fuji in a total of 4 days.

He comes to a bridge as the sun is setting. A single individual standing in the middle of it. Bones and tattered clothes floating in the river below.



The weary and tired man would only answer one question from Susulur if asked and then he would equip his katana in one hand and say:

Yoshida Oshiro

Oshiro took no joy in taking the man's life. It was a part of his duty, something that needed to be done plain and simple.

It would seem he would have no time to reflect on this however as another man, dragging a woman along with him appeared out from the distance. He gave a gesture to Aizen to move away slightly as he stood tall, Tachi in hand.

Given that he called him a savage Oshiro was willing to bet that this man would fight him in an honorable duel.

"I am no savage and you have no authority here. Let the woman go and fight me with honor if you wish to pass."

He braced himself, waiting to see what the next movements of his enemy would be.

The Climb - Part One

The quiet day was not unexpected, he was leaving a city of Samurai. The road near it would be well protected, and he traveled easy on Nobu. There was no need to travel hard, his horse and him both would have a hard enough traverse when they reached the mountain. Why rush hardship? He comes to a bridge as the sun is setting, he was debating on making his camp on this side or the other. Then he saw it. A single individual standing in the middle of it made the choice for him. Bones and tattered clothes floating in the river below. Trouble upstream? Or leavings stuck that this one had made. He stopped near enough a light yell would carry his voice.



"I am a Samurai on a journey. I seek safe travels." The man then equiped his katana in one hand and say:

"This is where your short journey ends, young Samurai."

Nobu neighed and backed away as Susulur grabbed his bow. He would string it and let it fly as best he could, aiming true.

Biography:
For what little experience Soji has, he makes up for in spirit and promising ability. Nomura Soji spent his entire life training as a swordsman under his father and mentor, Nomura Hiro, who served closely under their Daimyo as a bodyguard. Soji held absolutely no interest in politics, but purely in the art of the duel, where his strength lies, and nothing else. He refuses to use any form of fighting apart from his katana or in the most dire of situations, wakizashi.

Eventually, he found himself beginning to understand politics, but distancing himself from them. His skills lay in close-combat, and he was damn good at it.

After years of intense study, Soji passed his exams, and became a true Samurai. He said his farewells to his family, and left the capital for whatever the road had in store for him. Being used to a life of comfort, this change was strange to Soji, but his father had taught him the important lesson of making one's way in the world.

Now, with nothing but his katana and wakizashi, marking his status as a Samurai, and his horse, he prepares for journey, ready for the true beginning of his life.

A Journey to the Shrine of Sukizaki-Hanzo

His first departure from the capital may seem meaningless to Nomura Soji. The assignment of Fujisawa Village was taken and the only thing that remained were messenger assignments and duties to the local lords subservient to the Shogun around Kamakura. The Shrine of Sukizaki-Hanzo was a few hours ride to the West; going slightly north would have taken him to the aforementioned village, though he, as a Samurai, would not be welcomed alone. It was customary that when a village was under the protection of a Samurai that any other Samurai visiting should bring either gifts or coin. No, Soji was on his way to meet with a Teacher, is what he was told. A teacher that was apparently fairly important - Jaku Yanma. There were rumors that this teacher was wanted by multiple lords in the region; his knowledge of arithmetic and Japanese geography was somehow unique.

Beyond that, Soji had been given little.

The road he was traveling on was surprisingly well populated. Villagers transporting food, traders selling medicine and clothing, and he would even seen far more experienced Samurai passing by him, most not making eye contact. He was Samurai in title, but bared no flag of a Lord.

This was the time for Soji to collect his thoughts as he moved forward. The shrine was coming up soon if he did not stop to converse along the path.

Seeing the man was not going to back down Oshiro readied himself, his eyes glinting in anticipation as he maneuvered swiftly and at great speed. His tachi was drawn at the ready to defend himself with great haste. He would need to make this quick and decisive, but how was he supposed to attack when he needed to defend?

He would ensure that he complete his first mission. He had to, to do otherwise would be most dishonorable. They already thought of him as a total novice, he had to prove otherwise!
