Hello, book. I would say, "hello galaxy" or "hello future archaeologists" or even "hello snoops", but I don't expect anyone to be too interested in the ramblings of my little mind. I suppose I could say, "hello, me!" in case I one day become forgetful and need this little book to remind me of what I forgot, but for all I know I will have forgotten how to read Twi'leki too, and then where would I be?

So, to save myself and this book the disappointment of never reaching the fruition of its purpose, I shall let this little book be its own purpose. It need not be read. It just is.

Do you see what I did there? I started this wonderful project with a long rambling about nothing so as to bore to death any potential snoops and archaeologists (professional snoops of dead people's belongings) and thus is my booby trap. This book shall remain unread.

Right. Enough already. Don't mind me, I'm excited. I am jumping up and down! [text here is scribbled] Okay, breathe, silly girl. Let me begin.

My name is Oolana, I am sixteen standard years old, and today is the day before The Most Important Day of My Life. Today is my last day of school. Not just any school, no. It is the most special of all schools on Ryloth, because I am a girl and I posess the fair gene. Most girls of my type come from long lines and noble breeding, so as to bring out this rare and precious trait.

Actually, it's not a particularly pleasant trait to have, if you look at it objectively. It makes the sun burn like murder and we have to be kept indoors or slathered with sunblock. Even more inconvenient is the fact that this gene tends to bring other genes along with it; as a result most of us lucky girls are half blind.

It isn't even the fairness itself that makes us so valuable, though. But the near to complete absence of melanin pigmentation means that there is nothing to mask the even more rare and glorious colours that sometimes grace my kind. The legendary dancer and later traitorous Jedi Aayla Secura was coloured like a turquoise gem. But me? I was blessed with skin like a ruby. The rarest of them all, and I showed up randomly from a family of the most average looking fungi merchants!

Ack! It's getting so late! I have to look pretty tomorrow, so I need to get lots of sleep. I am going to do my prayers now and I will write more tomorrow. Good night, book!

    Thanks for reading!

That was pretty nifty! I would love to be on your PM list if you are going to have one.

I love how chattery your main character is, and she seems pretty intelligent as well.

Can't wait to see where this goes!

This is unique and I can already tell I'm going to love it! Please put me on your PM list.

Do you see what I did there? I started this wonderful project with a long rambling about nothing so as to bore to death any potential snoops and archaeologists (professional snoops of dead people's belongings) and thus is my booby trap. This book shall remain unread.

Archaeologists as professional snoops of dead people's belongings?

    [face_laugh][face_laugh]

That's a riot. Because being a soon-to-be archaeologist myself, that's EXACTLY how I would describe my career (ESPECIALLY if I was trying for a dry-witted response to another asking me what that is over and over).

Anyway, this looks like it'll be fun.

    Thanks, Specterace!

Well I figured I'd get going on the update, so here it is.

Hello, book. Yes, it is still me, Oolana. Would you like to hear how The Most Important Day of My Life went? Well of course not. You don't care. You're a book.

I'm so excited! Here's how it went. Well, I got up. That's not the interesting part. The interesting part is coming soon, I assure you. Just bear with me here. I got up, I took a nice bath and put on (finally!) my new gown, just for today.

Oh! It's so pretty! Let me tell you about this gown. It's shimmery and yellow and makes me feel like a sunbeam. It has a halter top (can you picture that?) and eight (count them, eight!) layers of shimmersilk making up the skirt. But it's so light, so lovely, that it just drapes over you and you don't even see all those layers until I spin, and oh, I love to spin in this dress!

I love it, I love it, I love it. Oh! I hope I get to serve somewhere that I can wear more dresses like this!

Okay, enough about my dress. Let me tell you about the others. My fellow graduates! Now, I am the only one with gem-coloured skin. At first, when we were just little girls, they were a bit intimidated by that. But I said to them, if I'm a ruby, you all are diamonds, because it's true. They're wonderfully talented and beautiful, all of them. Let me tell you about my friends.

There is Aeria, who sings like a ruebird. You will never hear a song as beautiful as when Aeria sings "Karaluna". She is also quite fond of fart jokes. She will unfortunately have to keep that little quirk to herself if she is sent anywhere important. Aeria, whose name means "sky" or (heehee!) "fair wind".

And then there is Kalania, Kalania with the blue eyes like Ryloth's pale and twilit sky. She's so spritely and small and dances like a little jumping bug! Oh, how she can leap! You have to see her dance. You would be amazed!

Oola. Oola the dancer! Where Kalania flips and jumps, Oola glides and sways... she is wonderfully proficient in the Classical styles and moves with such subtlety and grace, she must have the soul of a queen. Oola I think will find a place in the Imperial Court, or perhaps the concert halls of Coruscant.

Sulaya! Sulaya is a little bubble of joy! She sings and she dances and she plays the longflute most prettily. But what makes her so delightful is that she can bring a smile to anyone's face, she's so funny and sweet. She's so much fun to have around! She can make the biggest grump giggle. All the ills of the Galaxy could be cured just by the smile of her face. If you knew her you would understand. I will miss Sulaya the most!

And then... there is me. I sing and I dance, and I play a little harp reasonably well. But my real talent is that I am red. I perform being red very well. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a creature as red as me. And for that my value is greater than that of all my friends put together, three times. It feels a little funny, I suppose, but that's the way it is.

Oh boy, I'm getting really tired. Can I tell you more about this day tomorrow? I will have a lot more time, seeing as how it can't possibly be as important a day as today was.

    Good night, book.

    Thanks for reading!

Oolana's friends sound wonderful and she's so chatty LOL You've brought out the exoticness of the Twi'lek culture and the exuberance of youth in both posts.

I'd love PMs for updates. :D

Thank you! Hee hee, I was a bit worried that her chattiness would be too annoying, so I'm glad to hear that it isn't. Onto the list you go!

I hope you continue this. It's delightful. I think Oolana is a charming girl with a sly sense of humor. There's a little bit of grim foreshadowing, though -- the same Oola who dances the classical way with such grace that she will surely wind up in the courts of Coruscant doesn't quite end up where predicted, I fear.

I love this character's chatty innocence.

Hi everybody! Um, sorry about the lack of updates... [face_blush] I have no excuse. Bad writer, bad!

Here's an update if anyone's still interested in reading.

    - Ubersue :)

    *****

    Ack! Sorry!

Oh, I'm getting ahead of myself. Hello, book.

Okay, backing up to my previous train of thought: Ack, sorry! It is has been a whole three days since I have written! Book, you must be dying to know about the rest of the Most Important Day-- well no, you're a book.

Right. But you'll have to forgive me (I hope!) because despite the fact that my last few days haven't been all that important, they have been very busy.

So, continuing. I was telling you about my dress and how red I am. Well, my fellow graduates and I took THREE HOURS!!! to get ready (we had dresses to put on and accidentally wrinkle and have to iron again, we had fingernails to paint, toenails to paint too, and entirely new faces to paint over top of our old ones which I do say are pretty but definitely not glittery enough) and I think I just lost my train of thought. Oh, yes, there it is! We were finally ready, and our head teacher Mother Tulu smiled and cried and told us we were beautiful and gave us hugs. Then she lined us all up (Aeria first, then Oola, Kalania, Sulaya, then me) and said a prayer for us when it was time for us to go outside.

Oh my goodness! Every year I see new graduates, the jewels of our planet, emerge glittering before the proud citizens of Ryloth. But this year it is really me, and I have never been more proud of be Twi'lek! We stepped out of our convent into the open air and stood on the stairs in front of the thousands of people who came to watch. And then our royal guards took us each by the arm and led us to our car, a great big speeder decorated with flowers and embellished with gold. The wind ruffled our dresses as our car slowly made its way along the street. Thousands upon thousands of people watched us, and hundreds of women reached out to touch our car and then bow, hoping that our blessing will bring them beautiful daughters and prosperity.

Far ahead, Ryloth's exquisite Rock Gardens floated in the sky like bumpy hovering ships, or maybe bumblebugs who can't decide which flower to go to. And suddenly my heart ached and I found it hard not to cry because my home is just so beautiful and I realized that I'm going to miss it. Wouldn't you?

Time to sleep now. Goodnight, book!
