Hey guys, since we're in an obelisk craze right now I was wondering who wants to build an obelisk with me? We can put it up somewhere random, like a desert or a Subway parking lot.

I think it's kind of ridiculous that all these obelisks and monoliths keep appearing in "random" locations that happen to be deserts, that's only like 1/9th of the Earth. Sure, probability is finicky, but just from a statistical point of view they really should be hitting oceans more often.

Perhaps they are. Who would know?

Also--that thing in the Utah desert is not an obelisk. An obelisk is shaped like the Washington Monument, or a very tall Klansman. The Utah thing actually technically isn't a monolith either, because a monolith ought to be made from a single slab of stone. However, it resembles the monolith from 2001, so there you go.

Edit: We should definitely start building obelisks, though, because faux-monoliths are SO last summer.

We should build a robot that builds the obelisk

We should build a race of genetically manufactured dwarves who build a robot that will build the obelisk.

None of us would be hurting our heads if we built a menhir instead.

All you need is a really big 3D printer or a really small obelisk. Small obelisk seems easy. Print it. Give to dog. Let dog bury in back yard. Real world answers to all your obelisk problems. That's what I'm here for.

And the technology that made that movie possible also helped fake the moon landing, so more real world solutions to tough problems.

The second time I went to Burning Man I had spent months working on an art installation that was erected in the desert. And then we burned it. Good times. But I really think this obelisk could be my shot at a permanent erection and I want to share that experience with y'all.

No erection is permanent. Even rock-hard monuments like Mt. Rushmore will erode within a few million years according to a YouTube video I saw.

If your Mount Rushmore president lasts more than 4 million years, then call your doctor.

Can we be more creative and make it in the shape of a squirrel?

They investigated the monolith and found "human made rivets" in it (Colbert had a solid riff on how awkward and potentially alien cover-up sounding that is). If you wanna monolith, you have to piece to together so that nobody can see the seams.

Exactly, Big Monolith is getting sloppy, opening up a prime opportunity for obelisk-based startups to disrupt the large vertical objects space.

This was in fact one of the proposals for the Barack Obama National Memorial Planning Thread, which seems only more and more relevant as the days go by.
