I heard it reached over 200mph?

 

I'm reading the advisory off intellicast.com website and I'm not seeing anything above 200 mph

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...200 MPH.

The gusts of wind will most likely be over 200 mph on the other hand...

 

A the last update on Wunderground was about 5 hours ago. Winds were 200, with gusts up to 245MPH.

This is going to be one heck of a storm....

usually intellicast reports the wind gusts but this time they didn't. shrugs I just figured it was over 200 since the wind speed was 200.... 245 gusts, that is just crazy

 

Anyone have any links to a webcam showing the full impact? A lot of the webcams currently show very little rain.

What I'm seeing on the radar it looks like the hurricane didn't hold it's shape and looks like as soon as it hit land downgraded quickly

There was some luck about where the storm made landfall south of Puerto Vallarta and 60 miles north of Manzanillo.

 

The storm didn't hold its shape as soon as it made land fall. Mexico got spared.

There is some worry the storm will cause mud slides in the mountains...

 

Every hurricane dissipates over a continental land mass, so I don't think what the media is describing is different from any hurricane heading directly at a mainland coastline. Florida is a bit of an exception. There are recent cases of hurricanes crossing Florida and then reforming over the Gulf, most notably Katrina. I think the level of damage will end up having more to do with the place Patricia made landfall.

 

It hardly rained and I guess the concern is it raining right over the mountains. I'm not a hundred percent sure it even has enough rain to cause damage. The storm didn't last long and burnt itself out as soon as it made landfall. I guess we'll see but it depends on how much it rains in the mountains if it causes enough for a mud slide or not.

1954 is a good example of that. Hurricane Hazel reformed into a second storm that flooded Southern Ontario.

 

You could tell it wasn't gonna be that bad from the webcams. I was looking at several webcams, and the storm is about to land but there is barely any rain and high winds!

 

A quick shout out to those idiots in a mandatory evacuation area who will not evacuate, so other people have to risk their lives to save you.

 

I'm fortunate to be just northeast of it, so I won't be one of those idiots.

 

Are those the same people who want to be free to choose not to carry health insurance but won't be able to afford to pay their bill when they do have a medical emergency?

Diversity in idiocy is important.

 

Not that I want to be in the business of excusing idiots, but the sense that authorities and the media overhype the danger in order to encourage evacuation and subsequent stories of the mass inconvenience to people who fled unneccessarily contributes to people not evacuating.

Aren't there other factors such as poverty and health that keep people from evacuating?

 

A quick pang of sympathy to those poor, disabled, isolated, or otherwise vulnerable people who are unable to evacuate, but will face scorn as if they were.

 

I think the statement was aimed as those who are able and "will not evacuate" as oppose the unable and cannot.
