I jerked my head up off my desk where I had fallen asleep on top of a stack of datacards. Blinking groggily, I looked over to the source of the interruption.

Syal stood there with an air of seriousness that one usually doesn?t expect from an eight-year-old. ?What is it, sweetie?? I asked hoarsely, then cleared my throat.

?I have to do a presentation in front of the whole class for school tomorrow,? she replied mournfully.

I was filled with a surge of pride that was surely disproportionate to the news she had given me. A presentation. Wow, it was only yesterday she was learning to talk...

?Oh?? I asked animatedly. ?On what?? If it?s on the total uselessness of the New Republic bureaucracy, I have a whole bunch of datacards here you could use.

?Ewoks,? she answered.

Kriff.

I wrinkled my forehead and shook my head slowly. ?Uh...huh. Maybe you should ask your mom for help with that, hon, I don?t really know much about...? I trailed off. Good, Antilles. That was casual. I don?t think she could smell the fear...

?Oh, I?m already done with the presentation, Daddy. I mean, I?m doing it tomorrow. How dumb of me would it be to leave it til the night before??

?Oh! Right. Of course. Right.? Phew, dodged that one. I turned and started sorting the datacards on my desk, relieved that that conversation was over.

Wait. She?s still standing there. What could she??Oh! Uh...did...did you want to practice it for me??

?I already practiced it for Mom,? she said.

?Good, good...? The Force is with me, after all. I looked at my chrono. ?Well, it?s late, Syal. You should be getting to bed.?

?Daddy, I?m scared.?

My mind was still foggy from my unplanned nap. ?Of the Ewoks?? I asked confusedly.

?No, Daddy, of the presentation. I told you, I have to get up in front of the whole class.? She huffed, frustrated by my inability to see what this was all about. ?Daddy, I don?t want to talk in front of all of those people. What should I do?? She now had tears streaming down her face.

I held my arms out and let her climb up into my lap. ?Wellll...when I was nervous about my first briefing as head of the Rogues, your Uncle Wes suggested I picture everyone naked.? It was a disastrous suggestion. Five minutes in, I couldn?t take my eyes off of Ackbar, realizing I did not have an extensive enough knowledge of Mon Calamari anatomy to complete the exercise.

Syal made a face. ?Dad, that?s gross.? Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper. ?There are boys in my class.?

?Oh! Right...yes, I can see how that would be a problem...? I scratched my chin thoughtfully. Well, when that hadn?t worked, Luke had suggested?

?You could try a Jedi relaxation technique.?

?Dad, I?m not a Jedi.?

?I know, sweetie, but...? What had Luke said? ?the Force is, uh, all around us, and uh...anyone, even non-Jedi can...tap into its...uh, calming energies.? As I spoke, I clarified my point with what I deemed to be appropriate hand gestures. I coughed and looked at Syal, who had an expression of unmitigated skepticism on her face.

?Uh-huh...? she said uncertainly. ?So how would I do this Jedi....thing??

?First you clear your mind of all thoughts, and take deep, cleansing breaths.? Listen to me. Wedge Antilles, Jedi Master.

Very nice piece. I am way behind on the EU continuity (did not follow the NJO) so I did not know The Great one was married with kids. (Who did he marry? Mirax?)

His advice was really sweet, and his sudden picking her up and taking her to bed, and then realizing he hadn't lied at all. Very nice.

It's so funny, but a sweet ending.
I was trying to find the right mix of Wedge-is-clueless-and-doesn't-know-what-to-say (funny) and Wedge-is-a-great-dad (sweet). Lots of parents, I think, worry that they are bad parents because they don't know the "right" answers. But to be a good parent you don't need to know the "right" answers, you just need to care (that's my theory anyway).
