Hey everyone! This is my first ever post here, I love the Star Wars Expanded Universe but I’m wondering what is everyone’s most favourite stories in the Star Wars EU? I hear amazing things about the Post ROTJ era, The New Jedi Order, Darth Plagueis, Darth Bane Trilogy, Revenge of the Sith novelisation, KOTOR video game duology, Thrawn Trilogy, X-Wing series, Kenobi, Clone Wars era stories etc and many more. Also, how do the films compare against the greatest Star Wars stories in the EU (especially the Original Trilogy)? I know the movies are really part of Expanded Universe but are your favourite stories in the EU better than the films or maybe not? Do you like the EU better than the films? Your favourite story can be across any form of media: books, comics, movies, TV shows and games. I’d love to hear your answers (also since I’m new to this forums who are the smartest people when it comes to the Star Wars EU here)?

The New Jedi Order and the Yuuzhan Vong are quite controversial, but the amount of love and respect that The New Jedi Order gets from experienced hardcore EU fans who have read stacks of the EU is unbelievable, especially books like Traitor and The Unifying Force. New Jedi Order seems so epic, and it is peak Star Wars in many fans opinions. But I’m yet to read it!

The X-wing novels (and assorted materials, like I, Jedi or the Dark Tide and Enemy Lines duologies).

For a lot of reasons, but I think the biggest one is that it's a corner of the universe that only a couple of authors worked on, and those authors were largely on the same page. It means you don't have multiple radically different versions of the main characters (if you do, it's as side characters in other novels where it's relatively easy to ignore), and it means the characters are allowed to have reasonably happy endings. I get more of a sense of continuity and closure there than I do from the main Skywalker saga.

Hmm... I definitely love the New Jedi Order books and Star Wars Legacy comics. Also, The Truce at Bakura and the Thrawn Trilogy are one of my favorites too.

The X-wing books were a lot of fun. I read them all as they came out.

I'm old, so I was also able to read Brian Daley's Han Solo books as they came out. Those are still my favorite SW books.

My favorite works aren't even really a story. They're the reference books: The Wildlife of Star Wars, The Essential Atlas, The Essential Guide to the Force. Those kinds of books that allow you to completely immerse yourself in the extremely deep, extensive and cohesive fictional universe that is the Expanded Universe.

But that's also what makes me really sad these days. I get that Lucasfilm had to de-canonize the established continuity, but they needn't have de-canonized the setting. They could have easily kept all the planets, alien species, technology, cultures, organizations etc. canon and told new stories in the same universe that we knew and loved, instead of some weird distorted mirror version of it where 75% is the same but then some if it is suddenly completely different.

    The Unifying Force

IMO, a novel that captured the cinematic experience of Star Wars.

…and a great conclusion to the NJO series…

…and probably should have concluded the legends EU.

Novel wise, Darth Plagueis and Kenobi are wonderful showcases of expanding classic characters.

I find much enjoyment in comics like Republic, KOTOR, Jango Fett: Open Seasons and Legacy.

As a gamer, I almost play more Star Wars games than watch Star Wars movies especially games like KOTOR 1 & 2 and TOR. Though my favorite Star Wars game might be the underrated Bounty Hunter.

For me its overall YJK, I think NJO has some books that are better but also a series clunkers wich aren‘t that great or only average.

YJK just has a timeless magic to it no other piece of SW has I feel.

Rise of the Sith: Darth Plagueis (novel), Labytinth of Evil (novel).
Post-ROTJ trilogies: Thrawn (novels), Dark Empire (comics), Crimson Empire (comics).

I recently sold many items of my collection, with exception of those books and comics. They remain my all-time favorites!

Thank you for sending me a message. Hopefully, my answer provides some insight.

The X-wing Series Books are my fave. (The Fab Four <3) I also really like the Republic Commando books (made me a Mando lover). The NJO books I did like (good mix of Jedi action and space battles with lots of character development ). The Darth Bane books were awesome. (I really did enjoy Bane's story) The Clone Wars comics were nice. (where I came to love Aayla Secura). Oh and of course the Thrawn Trilogy and Duology.

On the first question, for me, yes they are, my favorite stories from the EU, namely the Legacy comics, the KOTOR comic series and the NJO books reach a level that is much higher than the films in storytelling.

I do like the EU better than the films overall, simply because it was the EU what made me a hardcore fan of Star Wars, not the movies, i've always watched the movies since i was 6, and they were always there in my life, but it wasn't until i read the Legacy comics back in February 2015 that i truly fell in love with this universe, i feel a much closer connection to the world, the stories, and the characters when they are in literary media.

And, to answer the main question, my absolute favorite Star Wars story is the Legacy Volume 1 series, and my favorite books are Traitor, and Conquest from the NJO series.
