What does Jabba's Palace Door Eye Droid do all day?

It's a talking eye on a stalk imbedded in a door. When it's not greeting someone, what the devil does it do?

 

I always thought there was someone behind the door using that probe thingy and it wasn't a droid at all. Maybe I'm wrong.

or schedule maintenance for that door. every day. because nobody ever comes by, judging by the squeaking

 

I always saw that thing as a security camera-type device rather than an actual droid.

 

Perhaps it sings. Can't have much company. I'd be so bored...

 

Doesn't it laugh at one point? It makes sense for it to be an intercom device, and I assume Bib is behind the mic.

 

I wonder if Avon and Jehovah's Witnesses go there and what fun the eye has.

I thought VLM just made that name up and it just meant something funny that I didn't get last night.

I was half-right. It's meant to evoke "tattletale" but that's official

 

Maybe there are more eye droids that all pop out and try to snag visitors in greeting and he got it that day?

True, but did you notice how long that probe thing was? Much longer than the door was thick. I thought someone was on the inside and used the probe kind of like a telescope or something.

 

Yeah, I always got the impression that it was a telescope type thing. Why would a droid want to look at them?

It's not completely inside the door.

 

I doubt that the droid is actually an intercom.

This is Star Wars, droids do tasks that are boring, like greeting people and replacing windows when Jedi jump through them.

Besides, it's pretty clear that Jabba has a limitless supply of money. Cost-effectiveness of a droid vs. staff isn't a concern.

Jabba has also demonstrated that he doesn't care about how others feel (since he has, you know, slaves) so I'm sure he doesn't care if a droid sits around being bored. Heck, he even had a droid torture chamber.

 

Everytime I see that droid eye stalk on the palace door I start thinking of Flight of the Navigator

 

For the longest time I thought it was one of those B'omarr monk spider droids. After the door opens 3P0 walks in and sees one and starts running after R2. But the TT and the spider droid are indeed separate.

 

Heck, he even had a droid torture chamber.

You were indeed right, it was the B'omarr that was using the door device. The monks themselves aren't actually droids but rather disembodied people who put their brains inside those bubble containers on the nose of the robots in order to gain another level of spirituality. The thing inside the door isn't a droid, it's a door answering device much like one's you see on normal houses and other buildings. God, would you listen to me?! I must be a certified geek knowing this stuff!
