Man, what happened to this poor thread? I am gone for a few week and look what happens.

The conclusion to Vader Down was badass to the max. Vader wrecks it, he really does. I think this is the first time he really gets to dominate under Kieron Gillen's pen.

 

I find this lack of activity disturbing.........

 

Vader Down was glorious. I’m still trying to pick a favorite badass Vader moment out of the many badass Vader moments there. Can’t decide!

I would say, even though the dogfights where Vader is taking out dozens of rebel pilots single-handily were deviously delicious, what I loved the most about the series was that it really showed how much of a genius warrior Vader is on the ground. Instead of just making up new OP force powers ala TFU, the writers (especially Gillen) actually tried to come up with smart and believable solutions instead. Like using the Force to active grenades, using the lightsaber to deflect blaster shots to take out the tanks, removing the cannon from his TIE to take out incoming X-wings, etc.

The other day I was showing the OT to a friend who was curious about it after seeing TFA as her first SW movie, and towards the end of ESB, after Vader talks about disabling the hyperdrive of the Falcon, she exclaimed “Vader is like the smartest man in a room, he always thinks of everything!” I somehow feel that over the time this trait of Vader was forgotten in favor of re-imagining Vader as more of a mindless brute. Which is why I am happy that these comics are bringing back that intelligent, “cunning warrior” side of him

 

I agree with the cunning warrior side of Vader, and I think ESB does a great job of showing Vader as a strong military commander. I believe that being in the suit and knowing some of his physical limitations, has made Vader by that point, much more of a thinker and a strategist, rather than just rushing headlong into a situation as he did when he was younger. He still gets ticked off when he does not get the results from his people that he demands of them, but I think he does realize he is playing a long game and is thus a bit more patient than he was in his youth.

 

I don't know if you guys are watching Rebels, but:

Lord Vader sure knows how to make an entrance.

 

How he acts, speaks, dresses and moves is also all about psychology, intimidating and out-psyching his opponent as brilliantly shown in his confrontation with Luke in TESB. He knows exactly how he can undermine your resolve, figure out your weak spots and put a knife into them. I believe that showing the back of his bald, scarred head was also completely purposeful manipulation.

The contrast to Kylo Ren is interesting as Kylo is usually out-psyched by his opponents.

Darth Vader... greatest villain or best villain? i'll let you decide.

my favorite line could basically change hourly. so much great material, all performed by the great James Earl Jones, whose inflections make even the mundane lines memorable. for now i would go with
you are in command now, Admiral Piett.

favorite Vader moment is when he watches Luke tumble into the depths of Cloud City. what excellent body language.

for me Anakin in the prequels was a big Swing-and-Miss. it's difficult to even think of them as the same character. i do dig the TCW version, though.

- Accidentally, it's also my favorite line spoken by this Master of Evil. Such a great scene!
