In the Last of the Jedi series, Ferus likens Palpatine’s new appearance as something out of a horror holo. I hate scary movies but I am fascinated by their plot structure and often read the plot summaries on their Wikipedia pages OR ask my sister after she sees them.

That being said; what do you think Star Wars horror holos are about? Sith?

They're probably movies based on E.K. Johnston novels, filled with unnecessary swearing.

You're on a freighter, off to the Outer Rim to colonize some planet somewhere and leave behind your life in the Core Worlds. Your wife and family are at your side, when all of a sudden the ship is ripped from hyperspace.

The ship is a medium sized freighter. Plenty of room to get lost. The ship is operating on emergency back up power. You're struggling to to get the ship's hyperdrive back online and get the ship to a safe port.

But all the while, one by one, your crew and family are being hunted by a Starweird, hungry for your very soul.

Considering that Shadowspawn's movies included Vader and Palpatine - yes.

Honestly, the star wars galaxy is filled with stuff that would make good holo-films before you even get to anything fictional in-universe.

    Starweirds as already mentioned.
    Space wraiths.
    Sithspawn.
    Drengir
Yuzhan Vong after their whole conflict.
    Witches
    Multiple flavors of undead
    Living vampire like creatures
    Completely mundane yet terrifying wildlife
    Killer droids
    Killer cyborgs
Reverse cyborgs who are droids that like to graft living tissue to their bodies
Murders of every stripe (dark side using serial killer is an archetype I am especially fond of despite being fairly rare)
    So on and etc

Plus, the way the galaxy is, and how big it is, I imagine in universe filmakers could easily make up a fictional planet to be full of horrible creatures or ghosts or whatever, to say nothing of abandoned spacestations, the underworld of Coruscant, and all other kinds of isolated spooky locations.

I've always thought a horror style Star Wars movie would be fun anyway. So in-universe there are probably millions of possibilities. Paranormal type stuff is always popular, so I'd bet something about "hauntings" by any type of dark Force users would be popular. Endless possibilities for Creature Features, and wouldn't even have to create any. Just use them from other worlds.

Did anyone read the little Galaxy of Fear books back in the day? It was like Star Wars Goosebumps. I can't remember any of the actual plots but I remember getting them from the library.

17 minutes in the middle of the film dedicated to how the slasher killer designed his outfit :p

There ought to be Chthulhu-esque eldritch horrors from unknowable dimensions, with incomprehensible plans for life in the GFFA. Their very appearance and presence should warp the minds of all so unfortunate to suffer horrifying glimpses of them.

Any or all of Alan Moore's "Devilworlds" stories could inspire a 'horror holo.'

Wasn't there a planet that ate people in the Galaxy of Fear books?

A luxury cruise ship accidentally makes a jump into the unknown regions and is stranded on a seemingly dead world. Then, people start disappearing. I imagine there would be a big reveal that the ship’s malfunctions were caused by sabotage and the saboteur was part of a cult that brings people to it’s seemingly dead home world as sacrifices to space grazers or something

We need more horror in Star Wars.

I liked Death Troopers as a kid but now checking out Red Harvest and not really digging it at all. I think it’s sort of a perfect idea for a Star Wars Expanded Universe book in theory, but in execution all the characters are awful and the action/scares are repetitive.

Yeahh the premise of Death Troopers had potential, but it ended up being very cliche and boring

Wow you really don’t like real world swears in Star Wars. One day there will be an F bomb dropped in Star Wars. It is only a matter of years IMO.

They tried in Andor, I believe that the only person in Star Wars who should drop an F bomb and not have it be jarring is Mace Windu.

I don't need to see/hear excessive real-world cursing in Star Wars media just like I don't need to see overt violence, sex, and nudity. For me, Star Wars is PG-rated space opera in the spirit of pulp sci-fi and occasionally mixed with other genres. By mixing in more adult themes, visuals, and language, it dilutes the brand. The EU generally carried forward that same spirit for 35-40+ years and there is no need to change that recipe. It was perfect the way it was.

Speaking of garbage books, Alexander Reed's Rogue One novelization is a breath of fresh air after slogging through Battle Scars and Crimson Climb.

Eh I agree with overt voilence especially when almost every weapon is supposed to burn flesh and cuatrize the wound. But I always find the in universe swears dumb as ****. Like Kriff? Really? Karabast? Really? I find them more stupid than just saying the word. But I think it comes down to personal presences and what you also do in the real world. I swear all the time. As one can see from all the censors in my posts. Other people don’t it’s whatever.

IMO they are just words. And hearing Karabast is literally no different to me than hearing someone say any four letter swear that you think belongs here ****

I guess Kriff would be a better example in that case. But my point stands. To me there is literally no difference between the use of made up swears and actual swears as it’s very easy to tell the context and realize what real world swear they wanted to use.

also Dank Ferrick or however the heck you spell it is probably the dumbest one IMO.

although I will always have a soft spot in my heart for my mom’s really horrible attempt at not saying the F word when I was a kid and using frig instead. Still makes me laugh when I remember.

And way worse words have already been used than what EK Johnson uses. Although those are found in Legends and not canon. So the cat is out of the bag on this one.

I always enjoy the "if you could add one f-bomb to an existing line from any Star Wars movie" posts on social media. People come up with some really hilarious ones in comments. The LOTR ones are usually great too.

And now I'm genuinely wanting some Star Wars horror stories. Maybe there's some good fanfics of that sort? Might have to try and look.

Where are these "worse" ones in Legends? I've not read every Legends book, mind you, but I don't recall any that needed to be completely censored here.

As I mentioned in the review thread for Crimson Climb, I swear on a daily basis left and right. I enjoy depraved, volatile adult-themed media just as any other red-blooded child of the '80s. James Cameron and Paul Verhoeven movies are imprinted into my DNA just as much as Star Wars. But just as if Predator, Aliens, or Total Recall did change their language and started using frilly, in-universe swearing, so too would those recipes be diluted and going against the tone and feel of their foundational works. I understand that with multiple media in movies, streaming, and books we all have our different viewpoints of what Star Wars is -- to each one of us -- but just as I don't expect to see depictions of topless Twi'lek dancers or people snorting glitterstim off of datapads, I think some authors can try a little harder in learning to be good writers and just use different descriptions of exclaimation. And maybe not even in-universe swears but just differently-worded text that conveys the surprise, anger, and vehemence of the character in question.

Again, it has less to do with the specific words and tells me more about bad writing that is being obfuscated with try-too-hard edginess. Also the sense that somebody doesn't understand the franchise and is trying to shove it into an area of modern sensibilities where it honestly doesn't belong.

Yeahh that probably would’ve caused a stir back then, I can’t find anything about it so I’m probably misremembering. I guess I should reread Shatterpoint again, never hurts to do that
