What piece of EU work would you get ride of?correct if you could?

Hmmm...well COPL and Crystal Star are stunningly bad. And some of the books are pretty good. But overall, it's all kinda wretched and I think the EU lost sight of Star Wars a long time ago. I say scrap it all and begin again. Or better yet, scrap it all and let the movies stand on their own.

 

Trash the entire NJO and start over with the ideas at the end of VOTF as a starting place.

Correct all the continuity mistakes in Zahn's original trilogy that Lucas contradicted with the prequels, otherwise leave it intact.

Dark Empire never happened.

Mara was trained at the Academy, or received personal instruction from Luke. :wink :wink

JAT needs a major re-write.
Callista died at the end of COTJ.

Oh, rid off??? I'd dump the Bantam range of books, everything ever created by Del Rey, Marvel and Dark Horse. And those games can go too.

I really don't think COTJ or DS were that bad, but I would rewrite DS and bring more closure to the relationship. THERE WAS NO NEeD FOR PLANET OF THE TWILIGHT.
Rewrite Crystal star, I thought it might be made good by focusing more on Hethrir and his quest for power and remove the cult dedicated to the big golden blob.
Remove the Blackfleet Crisis.

Wow, so much to chuck, so little time... Honestly, the only EU books I can unreservedly say that I would keep are the original HS trilogy by Brian Daley. Those are the only ones I've never had a problem accepting as part of the Star Wars universe. As for the rest of it...
I remember back when I first saw an ad for Heir to the Empire, lo, those many years ago. I was overwhelmed by joy and excitement that the Star Wars universe was going to live again. At first, the sheer pleasure of having a new Star Wars fix was enough, but as the books kept coming, that joy slowly waned, until I finally realized, "you know, all of these stories have really wanked." Yes, I even feel that way about the Zahn trilogy. Admitedly they're alright, but there's a bunch of crap elements in them: the fact that the characters have appeared to stagnate over the five years since ROTJ (c'mon how about a little character growth?), those damn force repelling worms (ysalimari, or whatever), or even Thrawn's ability to predict actions based on the study of racial art (I mean, Art History is a life time pursuit in real life, and that's with only one planet to work from. Plus, I seriously doubt any art historian could really predict specific actions based on their studies. Besides, art is not all of one piece. Look at all the different styles, different mediums, and all of the evolution it's gone through in human history. Thrawn is not only supposed to have mastered all of that for numerous species, but still have found the time to have a military carrer as well? That's just STUPID!).
Of course, most of the books don't even have the decent elements that Zahn's did to balance out the crap, case in point being every SW book KJ Anderson has ever written, particullarly the Jedi Academy trilogy. God, these suck worse than anything. I mean, look at the basic premise: Luke has never successfully trained a student to Jedi status, so what does he decide to do? Train 12 at once! Words fail to express the sheer insanity of this!!! And what the hell is his obession with super weapons? Deathstar prototype and the StarCrusher in the trilogy. Another Deathstar knockoff in Darksaber. Get a new ******* idea, you moron!!!
Hmm... I guess that about sums up my feelings for the EU anymore.

 

I wouldn't call any SW author a moron...even if despite their sometimes lame output, they still put out a solid story for me, personally.

To this date, I only hate "Star Wars : As seen by the Droids". Everything else I can stomach, to greater or lesser degree. ( The Holiday Special almost is ultra-crap...but it has a charm in it's innocent story, and Wookiee porn sequence... )

 

Yeah Star Wars According to the Droids IS crap...but it does have its fair share of fun sequences.

 

A Wookiee porn sequence ? Really... Wow... I must have felt asleep when I watched it... <runs to his CDs, avidly searching for the CD which contains the 10x10 RAM Holiday Special>

 

Scrap it all, then start over again after Episode III.

I'd have to go with Crystal Star, and Visions of the Future. In CS Luke was way out of character, and in VotF Mara Jade really got on my nerves.

 

forgive my thickheadedness, but I have a terrible cold that feels like i've been pounded repeatedly in the head with a sledgehammer. What is CoPL, and CS?
Personally, I'd have to say the Crystal Star and Planet of Twilight. I like the x-wing books and i like the thrawn trilogy because of Mara Jade and the Noghri (sp?). Most of the others are okay. I like the idea behind NJO, but as sometimes happens, the idea and the follow-through turn out different. They're growing on me though.

I think that everything after TTT needs to be adjusted to be more in-synch. Everyone's personalities change so often, like Luke goes from upbeat Jedi Knight to real-downer Jedi Master overnight. The only one I would pull completely is Darksaber, and I would dedicate a novel in it's place to the death of Callista. Not because she deserved it, but because I would enjoy reading it so.

I would also make sure the Jedi weren't written as little demi-gods. They got so powerful in the Bantam series it was freaking ridiculous.
