Awesome syncopation. And slappin' dat bass man.

I bet Prince liked this group.

 

Yeah, Prince came out from this style. I love how there was no pressure at all to hit the chorus within radio-friendly constraints. And yet, this tune was radio-ready as any for its time.

I'm listening to Love's Train now. Very cool slow groove with some real nice jazzy chord changes here and there.

Now I'm checking out Straight From the Heart. Sounds like sitar guitar on the intro. Very cool. Nice vox harmonies.

 

They guys have got to be underrated. I hear a similarity to Rick James as well.

It's rare that I can put a group on the level of Earth, Wind, & Fire but these guys captured some of the essence of songs like the classic "September."

 

Yes, I hear that influence as well.
September is a classic.

Can You Feel the Groove Tonight is my favorite so far. I'm relistening and grabbed my guitar; the verse uses that smooth and hopeful vamp progression of an Ab/Bb chord resolving back to the root of Bb major. Kinda like Wanna Be Starting Something although that is in a different key.

And then Con Funk Shun modulate to Gb for the chorus which is a really nice surprise to hear; that key change and seventh chord funk.

Finally I have time to write more.
This intro has apparently thrown many a listener into confusion. This is one of those passages that needs to be written out to understand it. Could it have been improved by simplifying the odd meters? Or did it have to stay this way to capture some effect and mood? This piece leaves me in a state of suspense rather than offering much resolution. Maybe the clash of odd meters was designed to grab the viewer and leave them in a state of suspense?

I have had many listens. Maybe the composer should have simplified the meters? Can you give the performance an A in terms of cohesiveness of the parts? I can't give this an A. The mix has some instruments lowered in volume while the lead part gets raised up.
