No. Nothing like the Nutty Professor. He creates Dolemite through his stand up routine and evolves it to a feature film.

Masked Avengers (1981) Fun with tridents, in that cartoony, gore-filled Venoms way. Former Masked Avengers' chieftan Kuo Chui joins forces eith upright heroes to bring the evil and debauched gang to justice.

Chu Ko and Chin Siu Ho prove they can stand on their own against Kuo Chui and Lu Feng. Chu is partially good in the acting and weapons department.

I miss Sun Chien though (Chu Ko plays the role Sun would have probably had and Ko does it brilliantly).

Not one of my fave Venoms Shaw Brothers movies, but it makes me love 1982's House of Traps even more than I already do.

Greatly underrated and overlooked gem of a mystery movie, actually a trilogy, with a sequel and prequel. I like the original from 1998 best though.

    The Irishman (2019)

    Experience Format: Streaming (Netflix)

Man, this is 3.5 hours long and you feel every second of it. 20 minutes of this will feel like 2 hours. Despite that, it's not a bad movie. You have the sense of a full life story being told (thus the extensive runtime), though this is somewhat undercut by the younger De Niro still looking like he's in his mid 40's (but maybe that's the timeline here). It's very much an "experience"-type film- and it's not a film that should be broken up into multiple sessions (though I could see it very much working as a miniseries of sorts). There's a documentary-like feel to the film due to trying to so thoroughly cover this man's life.

The digital de-aging effects are pretty effective and rarely noticeable (probably helped by not having to de-age the characters significantly or them mostly being played by actors who have looked pretty consistent throughout the decades). Visually I didn't notice much that stood out as far as the filmwork goes, other than a matter-of-factly presentation to the instances of violence (which further contributes to the documentary vibe).

The film does have a sense of humor about it- sometimes with a scene or two here or there (such as a conversation about a fish) or a recurring use of abrupt, simply text on-screen. But those scenes and moments feel too few and far between to make them come across as a consistent element. Those facets almost feels like something you'd want to see Tarintino tackle, even if the rest of the film and performances would be utterly different as a result- but at least that sense of humor would be executed and expanded upon in a more integrated manner to the style of the rest of the film.

Very interesting cast, with both De Niro and Pesci giving understated performances that distinguish them from their past Scorsese characters (this isn't Goodfellas & Casino revisited), with Pesci being the immediate standout and the unexpected qualities of Deniro's role being made more apparent over time (which, again, supports the extensive runtime).

The real showstealer, however, is Al Pacino as Hoffa, who just dominates every scene he's in. It's an interesting reversal from Heat where, IMO, De Niro stole the show despite Pacino playing an equally bombastic character.

Some subplots that get an initial focus on, and later play a supporting facet of the last stretch of the film, don't end up feeling like as important a role in the progression of events as would be suggested by their amount of screentime- but they could be causalities of the editing for the sake of the runtime.

So, while of potential interest, I wouldn't give it a must-see recommendation. It wouldn't fall on my top films of the year or even among my favorite Scorsese films (though, admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of his work, even though i do love a couple of his films). Still, there's enough in there to suggest not dismissing it. But if you don't already know it is for you, it probably isn't.

    Herbie: Fully Loaded (2005)
The nostalgia is strong with this one. Classic rock tunes make the soundtrack a lot of fun. Pre-meltdown Lindsay Lohan is cute in a shallow way. CGI makes Herbie over-animated IMO, I liked him better when his expressiveness was more subtle, less cartoon-ish.

My headcanon is that this movie is the last entry in Disney's first attempt at a cinematic universe (pre-Marvel). :)

Marvel started it's Cinematic Universe prior to being purchased by Disney with Iron Man in 2008.

They definitely hoped it would be.

But if Iron Man had bombed, there would not be an MCU.

    Yeah, I know.

Here's how I lay it out:

The Shaggy Dog, with its sequel, Shaggy D.A. (the latter definitely being set in the town of Medfield).
That town home to Medfield College (Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber and the Dexter Riley trilogy are set). And Absent Minded Professor had the villain Alonzo Hawk, who...
...appeared in Herbie Rides Again (the second in the Herbie movies, and set in the same town and with the same building as the Love Bug), and Jim Douglas returning in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo. The final movie in this "cinematic" universe being Herbie: Fully Loaded, and that would have been solidified if they had managed to get Dean Jones have a cameo as Jim Douglas. :)

Medfield College. That movie is part of the Dexter Riley trilogy (starring Kurt Russell).

My headcanon what that Herbie: Fully Loaded was the precursor to the Transformers Bumblebee movie. Hasbro and Disney could collaborate and make Herbie an Autobot.

Herbie Fully Loaded had a glimpse of a newspaper article with a picture of Herbie and Knightrider's KITT together. Did that ever happen, or was it just something they made up?

    Payback: Straight Up

Never actually seen the original version of this action crime film but I heard it has much more lighter tone then this directors cut. In either case I quite enjoyed it and thought Gibson did pretty solid job portraying Porter, both somewhat unlikable and likable underdog just trying to get his money back from a crime organization.

    Season X (2016) – Julie Ng

This is the other documentary that’s part of The X-Files Season 10 package. 43:45, or whatever, was essentially a behind the scenes doc about the first episode the season. This attempts to more or less do the same thing with the other five episodes of the season. It’s around ninety minutes, so it is, once again, detailed in the way it looks at a lot of the things that go on in order to get an hour of television produced. I enjoyed this one more than I did the first documentary, probably because this one actually goes behind the scenes on a couple of good episodes, like Founder’s Mutation and Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster. Still, this has exactly zero appeal for someone who isn’t a fan of the show and it’s a little tough for even me to get through an hour and a half of this stuff. It’s fine . . . 2 ½ stars.

tl;dr – ninety minute documentary takes us behind the scenes of The X-Files’ tenth season, if you care; I didn’t, exactly, but it’s well-made for what it is. 2 ½ stars.

The theatrical cut is worth checking out- they reshot about 30-40% of the movie (it's actually longer than the Director's Cut) so there are characters and subplots unique to both versions of the film. The lighter tone works pretty well too. I was still glad they finally released the Director's Cut on DVD after almost 10 years from the theatrical release (we had seen footage of the deleted characters in the early trailers, so there was always that curiosity angle.).
