Amph What was the last tv episode you watched?

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is definitely binge worthy, but I'm not sure it will live up to the hype for everyone because that sets personal expectations. That being said, the dialogue and characters are sharp and very witty; the story, costumes and set designs are bright and colorful. The show is like Seinfeld meets Gilmore Girls meets Monks with the retro man's world of Mad Men.

You is a guide on how to stalk someone through social media told through the lens of romantic comedy tropes and misguided interpretation of body language, facial expression, choice of clothing and polite interaction. Back in my day, this would be "an after school special" on the dangers of putting you daily life on social media. Since the main character in You is a stalker, the first episode is a fest of creepiness but with some heart to add some depth.

 

LOL! I read that and thought, “that sounds kind of creepy.”

 

Sex Education, specifically the 8th and final episode of the first season.

It’s a Netflix original, set around the sixth form of an English school.

Mahershala Ali dominates so far, it's pretty much a showcase for his talent. I didn't recognise Dorff at first, but he's good in support.

The Goldbergs
- still feeling the repercussions from last week's events. Some good laughs amid the sadness. This week I didn't realize until the end that they were righting off the coach so he could appear on the spinoff. It was bittersweet. At the end of the episode, I did very much like the handshake from this show into...

...Schooled
- This show is starting to grow on me a tiny bit. I did like the B story with the principal and coach more than the main A story. Barry Goldberg gets a mention but no other information is provided. I will say that there's a semi good mix of student and teacher interaction so it doesn't feel like "Good morning Miss Bliss" which I'm semi worried the show is going to shift to and nobody wants that. Lainey doesn't feel like a teacher yet and I guess that's the point.

Modern Family
- some good writing this week although it was another episode where Luke and Alex don't appear on the call sheet. I'm guessing they're back at college. It's not mentioned. Dylan's mom is introduced. I don't know how often we'll see her, but she's kind of what you'd expect from Dylan's mom. Cam and Mitch has their typical storyline where one scolds the other for a bad thing, but the other also did a bad thing, so of course two negatives cancel themselves out and make a positive and they work out their issue. The formula is starting to a get a little tired, but there were some good jokes in there so in this instance their story had a good balance of feeling new and old at the same time. Lastly, we get a little Joe while his familiar fight about family history. There was a weird side thing with Manny and the librarian that I didn't get because he has his Canadian girlfriend so I was a little lost there.

I enjoyed it (as long as you ignore the school is more American than English). It's broadly in the sex-com category, but a lot more thoughtful than things like The Inbetweeners (plus the main character isn't actually desperate for sex).

It has a lot of warmth and heart, and the characters are very well played and cast. Although it's mainly focused on the sixth formers, it's quite mature and there will be one or two break out stars from this, I think. It's funny, but not laugh out loud funny.

It's also beautifully filmed, which is a bonus. (I think in Newport)

So, yeah, I'd recommend it.

Last night's A Million Little Things. Funny, I only watched two episodes all season and really only watched this one because I was too lazy to change the channel, but I easily picked up where I left off and didn't feel in the least bit lost.

 

I'm guessing that Gillian isn't in it much - ?

 

Hmmm. She is the main characters mother, and a lot of it is about their relationship, plus she has her own plot. So...yeah, she is in quite a lot, one of the main ensemble characters. Probably with the third/fourth most screen time.
