Discussion What We Do in the Dark Side: Taika Waititi to direct/co-write new Star Wars film

Honestly he'd probably do well with a Solo sequel. While most hated the original, it left unfinished business. I that he's the perfect guy to flesh out Han and Chewie's relationship and the seedy underworld of smuggling and the outer rim.

 

Did they? The impression I got was that the reactions mainly ran from positive to meh. I really didn't see too much hate for it (and with SW, that's pretty remarkable, seeing as how SW fans like to be as obnoxiously loud as possible when they dislike something.)
But regardless, yes, I agree that he has the right sensibilities to do something interesting with Solo, though I'm still inclined to think he'll more likely step into new territory with his film, rather than doing a sequel to a prequel about a character we already know quite well. (I'm not sure really why I think that, considering that he has done Thor sequels, it's just a gut feeling.)

 

Yeah, I personally loved Solo. From what I can tell, most of the fanbase either liked it or felt ambivalent towards it, but I don't believe most people quite "hated" it. I second the above post, though; I don't think Waititi signed on to do the Thor: Ragnarok version of a sequel to Solo. I think the closest we're going to get to a Solo follow up is the Lando series on Disney+, and that's assuming it's set after the events of that movie, not before.

I'd bet money on Waititi's movie being set far removed from the time period of the Skywalker saga, which really only spans 67 years from start to finish.

 

It was a box office failure, clearly set up for a sequel that has yet to manifest, and received plenty of criticism even on this forum... so yeah, I don't think it was that well received. That said my point wasn't to debate the popularity of the film (I enjoyed it) so much as suggesting that, while unlikely for the reasons already mentioned, it would be a great fit for Waititi IMO. There is still plenty of story to be covered that would allow him to stretch his legs creatively but still tie up loose ends with regard to the anthology. Not predicting it so much as spit balling ideas that would make a good match.

 

I hope the Waititi movie is a crazy prequel to Solo about bounty hunters. I'd love to see Cad Bane, Bossk, Dengar, Jabba, Maul and especially Beckett killing Aurra Sing.

 

I saw the neew behind the cenes for the mandalorian and Filoni with that Taika hair, makes you think. Any idea if Filoni might be involved somehow.

Filoni also wasn’t wearing his trademark hat in that video. You know who else doesn’t wear Filoni’s trademark hat? Waititi. Think about it.

 

More importantly, Filoni was also arranging collections of words in such a way as to form sentences. Something Taika is known for as well.

Only moved closer to Solo. I think all those survived that arc. Bane got himself a metal plate. I hope Taika does an IG-88 movie.
