I was thinking that all humans are anthropomorphic - "human-shaped" and all humans are animals, so "anthropomorphic animal" can be applied to any human protagonist as well as the more traditionally anthropomorphic animals like the Disney version of Robin Hood - so the character could fulfil both "is" (technical sense) and "is not" (conventional sense).
