As the lore already includes many villains from beyond the end of Return of the Jedi in the days of the new jedi order (which I assume will be the setting for the new film), Disney have a lot of choices for the new main villain, too many to mention. Which could actually work, or could there still be room for a major new bad guy, in spite of the tight paraphrasing of the lore books, games etc.?

I did a little research and gathered together some of the most powerful around at this time, but no doubt I will have missed some so don't be afraid to draw attention to any I missed.

    Clone/spirit of the Darth Sidious
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Palpatine

Indeed he doesn't "die" on Death Star II, his spirit lives and lays havoc on the new jedi order, and not just the once. He is a classic villain and has been very well portrayed in the films, but... eh, haven't we seen enough of his antics, wouldn't him appearing in another film be a little too much of the same? I think it would be nice to see a change of scene and have a new character to follow, but I'm sure some of you will disagree.

    Darth Krayt
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Krayt

Though still a sith lord, he's IMO seems more physically intimidating than the psychologically intimidating ones we've seen in the past. Is this a good thing, though? We have seen using brains rather a brawls has turned out to be much more of a threat to the jedi, and now the jedi have returned and the sith empire fell, I'm not sure he could represent the return of the dark side with any real weight. Again, if you disagree, feel free to vote him up.

    Sith Lady Lumiya
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Lumiya

There hasn't be enough female villains in the films IMO, and I think Lumiya would be a prefect choice for one. She looks very dark and mysterious without being shown to be too masculine, which would in my opinion shown some more personality and character than an atypical bad guy would add.

    Darth Caedus
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Darth_Caedus

Being the son of Leia, he would carry on the legacy of the Skywalker bloodline, and so I guess he would be the most relevant one to choose. However Lumiya being his original sith master, it may be a bit of a leap to make him the main villain.

    Lord Tremayne
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Antinnis_Tremayne

From the picture on the wiki he perhaps looks the most sinister of them all... which is what I like to see! Having been Vader's apprentice he would still be relevant to the main story, while his corrupt appearance can really carry a threat from the dark side that could unnerve the jedi.

    Beldorion
    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Beldorion

Not as central to the plot as the other sith, but he's basically Jabba the Hutt with a lightsaber and powerful force abilities... what more is there to say?

Mav Edit: As has been pointed out multiple times in this thread, this belongs in Who's the Baddie thread.

New original villain as the MAIN but let him be working with a past villain (whether it be Palpatine, plagueis, EU person, ect) in the background/shadows.

Where are the Yuuzhan Vong?!?!?!?!?!?!? Or some other alien species that causes trouble.
Palpatine returning wouldn't surprise me. I bet we will see him in the background trying to come back at the very least.
I think there is a good chance Plagueis might be it.
The new villain might be a woman as well.
A 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse type thing might be fun.

I am disappointed in the lack of Kreia.

On a more serious note: This "election" is kind of silly.

There's nothing to indicate that Episode VII will draw from the NJO series of books. You might reply: ''There's nothing to say it won't,'' but, when Episode VII was announced it was stated clearly that it will be an original story. I suppose that doesn't exclude elements of the NJO series, but it isn't, from what we've got to go on, going to be based on the NJO books.

We've not seen Darth Plagueis in the flesh though. Only mentions of him. So much potential there.

We don't know if Plagueis is dead.

Palpatine can be fooled. "You're overconfidence is your weakness" ringing any bells?
