I understand that these names are from other cultures but surely nobody would call thier child Brownetta!!! It doesn't sound like a African name or whatever to me.....cos if it is American then I worry for the parents sanity! Brownetta is just wrong!

My wife had a patient by the name of Yorhiness. She had no idea how to pronounce the name so she asked the mother who was offended by such a question and said very matter of factly, "your highness".

She also had a patient by the name of Gonoreah, which as you might have figured is a derivative of everybody's favorite STD gonorrhea. Apparently, the mother liked the way gonorrhea sounded but didn't want her child to grow up being made fun of so she pronounced it gu-nore-ee-ah. Mission accomplished. =D=

Now you mention it, Chlamydia would make a nice name for a girl too, bit like a cross between Chloe and Lydia or something. [face_thinking]

Those names makes me think of that scene in Crash where Matt Dillon's character says something like "figures" when the woman on the other end of the phone tells him her name.

Some stars have given their kids some weird names as well.

most of those names are culturally based. I believe most of them are African/Middle Eastern names, but dont quote me on that, cause I'm not sure.

*expects to be quoted somewhere down the line:rolleyes:*

That sounds like something from Lord of the Rings. I like it ... :D

I'd actually be more likely to name a child something unusual than something really common. I consider wierd names a blessing in disguise.

Indeed, Unknowable. They had their reasons, which is good enough for me. In much of the African-American community, each child is given a unique name, created by the parents and not shared by any other human being on earth.

A lot of these words actually mean something in certain languages. So even though they may sounds weird to the *cough*naive*cough*, they still make perfect sense and have a lot more depth and profundity than your average "Tom" or "Ashley."

I know a girl who's name is Iguehy, and not only is it pretty-sounding, but I don't find anything weird about it. Not to mention that she's an awesome person and a descendant of African heritage. So just deal with it, people-who-have-a-problem-with-these-names, because I'm sure that their's someone in Trinidad & Tobago or Iran laughing at your "boring" name for the same reason.

    P.S.: I have a very boring name. [face_plain]

Hah! Tokyo!! What a ridiculous sounding name for a city! I can't believe anyone would name their city that. And Cologne! What's with that? It's named after perfume har har har! Man, I am so culturally unaware!

I'm partial to city/state names for kids. I work with a Kansas and a Dallas, and I've always liked Austin for a boy, if it is spelled correctly. At my job I have to check a lot of id's, and one of the most interesting I have seen was.... "Awstun". Spelled just like that! I imagine the parents were trying to be clever, but all it did was make them look like they couldn't spell.

I'm certain someone has done their dissertation on naming in the African-American community.
