    "How are you going, ay?"

The funniest thing I would hear would be:

    "G'day, Ay!"

Coincidentally enough, the answer is the same as to the question:

why do southerners have such keen powers of observation and rapier like wit?

    Answer: They don't.

No he's right. Queenslanders (specifically North Queenslanders) do go, "ay". Canadians go, "eh". :)

    We say 'ay'?

I've been up north, I've been out west and I'm yet to meet a Queenslander who says 'ay'.

    Eh...now that's my word :p

I've met them, but admittedly it was Schoolies Week, so one can't expect the average IQ of the gals you meet to be astronomical. ;)

On the whole, it's not really a Queensland thing, it might be more of a rural thing for all I know. Certainly not common among Brisbanites I've met.

Very common in folk from Townsville. I remember friends in Brisbane thinking I was asking a question whenever I finished my sentences with it when I first came down.

I've never met anyone who says that either.

And when I went to Canada I was hoping to hear an 'eh' but never did eh.

I don't mean 'Ay' as in 'Aye', ie: "Aye Aye Captain", it is said like hay, without the 'H'.

It is not just QLD'ers that have their unique state / regional sayings.

Recently moved up to Darwin, I have noticed that one of the big sayings is 'true'.

I alaways thought this was something that Kiwis tended to do at the end of sentences.

I have however noticed that our southern friends (NSW and VIC) sometimes like to end comments or questions with "yeah".

For example..."So, you think Natalie Portman has a pretty hot bod, yeah?"

Yes they do. I've never heard you use it, but I don't really class you as a Pom, JP. It's an local thing, and since you are over here and they are over there...

While I do agree that Nth Qlders are the main culprits when it comes to saying "hey" after every sentence. You can't forget our south-western (Dirranbandi, St. George, Cunnamulla etc) cousins who have also started to include "hey" at the end of their sentences (not as frequently as Nth Qlders though). If you don't believe me come to the indigenous unit USQ (I'm frequently at the unit) and you will here "hey" approximately every 10 seconds. Believe that!

As a Townsvillian myself, I am constantly being accused of the infamous 'eh'. Especially by my interstate mates. We are bad, the worst even. When I'm in Sydney for a while, I can here myself say it and it's funny :) But hey, that's what makes us special eh.
