Being very online can be stressful in general. Yet twitter seems to be somehow unique in its awfulness. I follow popular people who seem kind of normal in other formats, then on Twitter I often see them obsessively posting painfully dumb takes. What's the magic behind this ?
Twitter was designed in a fashion that very deliberately removes nuance and context. It's not a surprise it's a perpetual dumpster fire.
when i was last on twitter (six-ish years ago?) i actually had my feed pretty much dialed so it was mostly enjoyable. my problem was i couldn't resist clicking on tweets and reading the comments, eventually crushing whatever hope i had left for humanity.
I only signed up last year because I was bored staying at home 24/7 but now I can't stop. Must. Have. Dopamine.
Sorry to hear it still sucks. I really hoped upping the character count to 280 would lead to complete coherent thoughts.
Sometimes it does. But just as often it doesn't. Obviously, you wouldn't follow anyone -or you'd stop following anyone- who talks crap, but it's the comments below that sometimes make you question your sanity.
It's designed to be addictive like a slot machine or video game. And almost the entire American media class is hooked on it lol
The good things I've seen of Twitter: -- is you can have direct access to people reporting things as they happen. Like there was a robbery in Kennesaw once, and I got on there and a guy was saying what was going on. -- you can contact others in means of an emergency. Like during the snowmeggedon years back, everyone was stuck on the roads so the cell towers were overloaded and you couldn't call out. So the police and others said use that or other social media to contact them as that worked. - artists can get an audience with their work. They can actually make a living selling their drawings and etc. Cons --allows nudity --anyone can post any of their thoughts --if you disagree with a topic, ie you're a conservative, you get banned for not towing the line --people join a Twitter mob and try to cancel you over the silliest of things
This was an interesting explanation I saw for why media people seem to be so addicted to Twitter and its intersection with "cancel culture":
Not only are the first two 'pro' more than they are 'con', your third con contradicts your second con.
what exactly is wrong with the human form? you're not even talking about porn here, just nudity. or are they synonymous?
I'm not sure about the anonymity argument, because my feeling is that even well known celebrities often come off as unbearable on twitter specifically.
well, 98% of the time celebs know they wont be banned and lets be real any actual controversy will be forgotten the next week esp with ones who have mega fans jumping anyone who critiques them.
Anonymity being the cause of online toxicity was common wisdom in the 2000s when social media consisted of places like MySpace and Facebook was more exclusive. Then we got over a decade of people signing up to Facebook and posting the most vile and stupid **** under their real names. It's not anonymity.
I remember a dude posting actual racist **** (N word included) towards someone on twitter over BLM and thus twitter finding his linkedin.. which included his job , guy had the same pfp across like 3 different socials, full name and location. I never use my real name, pic or city...just country or state..
