This xould be a very loaded question

    However -

Luke made it very ckear rhat he had retreated to the Island ro die.

He had cut himself off from the Force and did not even sense Han's death ir Leia's injuries. He rold Rey rhat he had come there to die and did not seem to be makung a serous study of the ancient texts to make a comeback. He considered himself to not only be a failue from a failed order but seemed to see himself as an active theat if he passed on his Teachings to the next generation.

Until Rey and then Yoda showed up his intent was to wait for death.

So why didnt he simply and painlessly end his life?

I realize that this mughtbsound almist cruel but Lke really did not see that he had anything to live for yet did not take that final step.

There was probably some part of him that knew he was wrong.

Maybe he just wanted to chill on an island and not be bothered by anyone else?

Same reason he could never bring himself to end the order. He was conflicted. Trying to end this cycle of religious violence he’s observed as generational but not sure what to do. He needed help but blocked it out. That’s where he got into problems. In the past when he went his own way it worked out. This time it didn’t.

Well, the obvious answer is because an off screen Luke suicide before the start of the ST is a complete non-starter in story terms, so the character was conceived as living out his days in isolation rather than suicidal.

He probably tried and failed miserably.

I took his statement to Rey to mean the island was to be his last stop, where he was going to live away from the Galaxy until his time came. Not specifically that he went there with the intention of dying. Just not leaving or getting back into the fray.

He was conflicted. Luke had clear signs of severe levels of depression.

I mean, he really failed Ben Solo. And he blames himself too hard for this.

It is natural that he decided to blame himself and this mystical Force power that can be so easily be used for the evil.

And he was right that the Jedi Order was messed up badly. The PT shows how they were blinded by their arrogance.

Luke would never kill himself, but he killed the Jedi inside him. But still, he was conflicted.

In a way, "The Force Awakens The Last Jedi" is a play with the movie titles that explains very well what happened to Luke in the ST. If this was a coincidence ot not, I leave to others to judge.
