Why would the Jedi name an ice and snow planet after General Hoth?

Seriously of all of the planets why did the Jedi have to pick a deserted ice cold snow planet and name it Hoth in memory of General Hoth?

 

IIRC, Hoth was known as Hoth before thousands of years before Jedi Lord Hoth was born.

I just want to know why the hell the Republic and the Jedi would pick an icy and snowy planet and name it after General Hoth There are dozens of planets and yet they have to go and pick a planet that's all wintery and name it after General Hoth

 

There is a source where the planet is already called Hoth in the TOTJ era, many years before Hoth's lifetime. It's just up to you whether you want to believe that source, or take the apparent cue from Jedi Vs. Sith that the planet may have been named after the man.

 

Maybe General Hoth was into cross-country skiing.

I'm no EU fan, but wouldn't the character Hoth have been created AFTER Empire Strikes Back?

 

You should check your sources bud..

All sources i've seen said that it's only possible that Hoth was named after the Jedi, but Hoth was known for thousands of years before he was born(I don't know if it was named then or not though), and ESB came 20 some years before Jedi Hoth was ever a thought in a writers mind.

As many have now said - Hoth he planet was named in 1980 |(ish) by Lucas. The General Hoth meanderings are post this - so not relevant....

 

We're talking in-universe, though.

 

And it's not named after him, either.
