Amne caught a look of curiously smug victory on his face.

But is she going to do or say anything about it?

    [face_worried] [face_worried] [face_worried] [face_worried]

I would hope it would start to open her eyes about Cos' true nature if I didn't know how dangerous it would be.

    Great update

So we're now into the period of TPM.:) When does Amne meet Jar-Jar Binks, I wonder?o_O

But enough of that speculation!:D To the matter at hand, Amne and Cos's[face_sick] honeymoon. At least he's doing the right thing, in insisting that it go on, despite the attack on Naboo:

Cos insisted on continuing with the honeymoon, since it was to be the last time that either of them had to spend away from their day-to-day duties for quite some time. Understandably, however, it was difficult to focus on being carefree newlyweds when the groom's homeworld was being blockaded. He checked in each night before they retired, but during the day, he was distracted.

We get to see hints of something more from Amne's point of view, starting here:

They had just returned from a concert by the Chandrilan Symphony when the concierge knocked on their door and hand-delivered a datacard. Cos thanked him absently and closed the door behind him. Amne looked up from her seat at the table where she was removing her earrings and froze at his look of dark intensity.

    ?From the Chancellor?? she guessed.

?And the Queen,? he corrected as he set the datapad on an endtable. ?One confirms that the Jedi have arrived in the system and the other alleges that the Jedi have not been sent.?

When he gets back from using the long-range communications equipment, having taken his travelling cloak (a big black one?o_O), and saying that he was talking to the Queen when the communication was disrupted, this is what she sees:

She turned immediately to look at him, but his face was impassive. He had his politician's sabacc face on so that he would be able to keep himself under control. The only indicators of his tension were his tone of voice and the furrow that had appeared between his eyebrows.

So the honeymoon has to be cut short now.:_| I had to laugh at this:

?I had hoped to give you a proper honeymoon, my dear,? he sighed.

She shook her head. ?We were able to have time to enjoy each other,? she reminded him. ?Even if it had taken place in the Consulate's auxiliary janitorial closet, I would have considered it to be a 'proper honeymoon.'

Now that would have been quite a scandal had it happened and been known about![face_laugh] Amne's being the supportive wife here:

?Besides,? she continued, crossing the distance between them to wrap her arms around his waist, ?I swore to be devoted to you in all things and to support you in trials. I would be remiss if I failed in that only a few days into the marriage.?

His hand cupped her cheek affectionately. ?I doubt that you know how to fail in that sense, beloved,? he murmured. ?It is one of the reasons that I chose to take you as my wife.?

Too bad he's evil...:_| Nice to see that she's also thinking of her job as well as her husband's. I liked her reassurance to Medur Kilan about her future conduct as a senator's wife:

?I hope it does not come to that,? Amne answered. ?He is a legislator rather than an ambassador. If he does go, it would not be my place to go with him. I would worry about his safety when he was away to do his duty, but I would do mine as well.?

That seemed to satisfy him; he reached up with one hand to clasp her shoulder briefly in a gesture of support. ?I hope you will keep me apprised of any developments.?

He was treating a worldwide crisis as if it were an illness in the family. Either he had less of a capacity for overreaction or he was understanding of the need to keep from panicking.

    ?I will,? she assured him.

I liked this comparison of the Palpatines'(!) marriage with a normal one:

In a normal marriage, the two partners would come home from long days at work, share an evening meal and complain about their jobs. They might watch a holonews program or call it an early night. In those aspects, the Palpatines were exactly like a typical married couple.

The difference was one of scale. Cos was freque

RK_Striker_JK_5--Thanks, Jon. I always enjoy Amne and Delani and if you hadn't cottoned on yet, she's going to be a major player later on. :) Glad it was natural. LOL, you're not allowed to fictionally object to a wedding. ;) Yes, he was a bit slimy even as a romantic.

Jedi_Eruanne--Awww, laundry and hatred are inseparably connected, I've found. ;) I'm glad you hate him.

LLL--*Hands over a towel* Yes, we're finally past what I like to call the inevitables. I'm very glad you're anticipating joyfully where this will be going next. I hope to live up to it. :) She really should appreciate these 'normal' phases. Yes, standard "Wife" signature. :p That is an appropriate pronunciation. And who's innocent? Haven't you been reading the sludgenews? ;)

KELIA--Because it's an Ish story... She will be developing an awareness of his manipulations gradually but will have various reasons for not reacting strongly to them. Well, we know that she's at least got 18 years before the exit interview. Thanks!

LLL--Uhoh, take cover! ;) I think Palpy as a veteran politician can make it look like he's shoveling manure and enjoying himself, so if they did things like being tourists or going to concerts, he looked strategically romantic and newlywed. That's essentially my 'vision' of him.

Kevin_Solo--LOL, love the emoticons that are so appropriate to this. You didn't make their names rhyme because hers is Ahmnay. :) Yes, that 'fame' is definitely working against her in this case. Jes and Delani are definitely based on friends that I'm lucky o have. Glad you liked that line about Palpatine from Jes. It took a few drafts as all good one-liners do. I am a huge fan of Bail Organa, so making him into something of an overly protective figure on Coruscant when those who usually protect her are offworld is natural for me. I'm glad that was in-character. Darn that dramatic irony. *hands over tissues* LOL, no, that scenario would never ever happen in a world like ours! I enjoy updating the family dynamic, especially since Book 2 of this will be ten years later and it will have changed even more. If you want to do more than imagine how much worry her father will go through, there is a bit of exposition on her eventual fate in Dogs of War. Like I said to someone above, things like joviality and sense of humor all have ulterior motives at a certain level. Glad you liked that part. You're going o love this next post, based on your side notes about what he really wants. And pompous comes with the territory. At least my ex was extremely grandiose when talking about me. LOL, I think her speech was simply more genuine. And glad to see there's some separation between what you are expecting of Palpatine and what you see as a reader. The val'brecht is based on a religious thing in our church called a Patriarchal Blessing. It's not the sort of tarot-reading thing and certainly has nothing to do with marriage, but most people receive it when they're in their teens or early twenties. It's believed to be personal revelation from God and it's not something you share with just everyone, so you will occasionally mention something about it to a friend, but even your best friend might not know all the details. Anyway, that was a bit of the inspiration for the val'brecht. LOL, that's a good explanation for her. I enjoyed shopping for the wedding dress immensely and drew inspiration for the sash of the groom's profession mostly from the tradition of a Scottish bride wearing a family's tartan as an accessory on her wedding dress. The entire wedding ceremony was pretty much a Star Wars translation (thanks to anagrams) of all the cliches, but ended with other things. To quote a Carrie Bradshawism, The better the wedding, the worse the marriage. Yes, that made me slightly ill as well. I haven't seen The Naked Gun yet. Maybe I will now. Writing that scene at an appropriate level of intimacy without making my readers bolt for the nearest barf bag was quite difficult and thanks go to LLL for betaing.

He nodded tensely, his hand resting next to the lily vase that she had placed on an end table as if he were restraining himself from knocking it off the table. ?It is likely that she will be forced to either sign the treaty or be killed,? he said bitterly. ?She is impulsive and short-sighted as ever and I am not sure that there will be a way to save Naboo by the time a new Chancellor is elected.?

    Ohhhh, pooooor Palpy![face_sick]

And it is a nice bit of preparation, that speech at the end. Can't you imagine the holonews replaying it over and over in, oh, about ten years from now???

And that Jar Jar bit was nifty.

    An excellent update!=D==D=

A nice bit about Amne getting used to bodyguards:

Amne had quickly become familiar with the ground rules of having bodyguards. The majority of them involved being within a line-of-sight from the aforementioned guards and refraining from escape attempts. One of the most fundamental principles was that of not trying to rush headlong into uncertain situations.

It was out of character for her to break one of those rules, but without consulting either of them, she bolted from her seat the moment that the session was adjourned. She walked briskly through the crowds beginning to gather, but was halfway to the Naboo Senate box before the guards fell into step with her. Neither of them chastised her, but it would not have made much of a difference as it was. Her head was pounding and she could barely hear her own breath, much less any protests from her escorts.

Having seen the previous look on her husband's face, she has begun to see that he is, in her words, playing politics with the blockade.[face_thinking] This is his explanation:

?The involvement of politics is inevitable,? he insisted calmly. ?I am a Senator, after all.?

?You don't have to remind me,? she shot back. ?I saw nothing done on the behalf of the Naboo today, but I did see how pleased you were with the chaos.?

?I was not pleased,? Cos responded. ?I was glad for nothing but the fact that under new leadership, we might be able to accomplish something.?

?New leadership,? Amne echoed. ?That is what you wanted all along, is it not??

?I wanted a change in the corrupt system that allowed my world to be enslaved,? he retorted. ?If it requires new leadership, so be it.?

He sounds convincing, doesn't he?:D If we didn't know what we know...o_O Her belief that he is playing politics is confirmed when he asks her to stay at his meeting with Zar:

Cos caught her arm in an unnecessarily firm grip. ?I would prefer that you stay,? he said flatly. ?You obviously doubt my intentions and I would rather correct that misconception than have a private meeting with a colleague.?

In other words, you would rather show a strong front than let people wonder how seriously I consiered supporting you politically.

She could not precisely identify when her faith in him had taken on a note of cynicism, but she liked it even less than he did.

Sad!:_| So Zar offers to nominate Palpy as the new Chancellor?o_O [face_thinking] I can certainly see this happening. What does Amne think?

Cos looked sharply at her, but there was no need for a warning of any kind. She had not regained her complete trust in him, but the tension that had angered her had bled away.

?I will support him if he chooses to be Chancellor,? she said quietly. ?The Republic could elect no greater champion of justice at this time.?

She wondered if it sounded like a rehearsed campaign speech to anyone but herself, but it seemed to please them both. Zar smiled and bowed his head in deference.

?You see, Senator?? he chuckled. ?You have the most important vote of confidence already decided in your favor. You would be wise to trust that the Senators will think the same.?

We all know what's going to happen next, of course!:)

?If the Senate calls on me to serve, I will not fail them,? he promised.

?In that case, I have a few comm calls to make,? Zar said quickly. ?Thank you for your dedication, Senator.?

Hmmmmm! She makes her feelings clear here:

?I do not want to oppose you on a regular basis,? she assured him. ?I will never make my disagreements with you a public matter, but if this sort of thing happens again, I will not support it.?

?I would not expect you to support anything blindly,? Cos assured her. ?I am not the sort of man who expects his wife to think him infallible.?

?Well,? Amne laughed, ?that is a relief.?

She initiated the kiss this time and lingered a little longer than she n

Jedi_Eruanne--Hee. I enjoyed writing that part because it seemed to fit so well with how he had manipulated the need for a vote of no confidence in the first place. And good catch that he basically foreshadowed everything for Episode 2. :) He's a manipulating jerk. Thanks!

RK_Striker_JK_5--I wonder if you'll ever think of him as something else. :) This was supposed to mirror his "I love democracy...I love the Republic" speech in AOTC, so I'm glad you liked that. Of course he used it for his own ends. Thanks!

LLL--LOL at how genuinely you said "pooooor Palpy." :) Glad the speech at the end was nice preparation. Of course the holonews will remember it in ten years. I can just see it on CNN or C-Span or something. Them putting a spin on it. And I had way too much fun with the Jar-Jar bit. Thanks. Here's another post. And yes, you have to put that bit in every time.

KELIA--Aww, thanks. :) I like it when he makes people shudder. Makes me feel that he's in-character. Yes, that's what he hoped for. Thanks again.

Kevin_Solo--Thank you. :) I am the sort of person who would never be able to get used to guards for those very reasons. Yes, she's beginning to see him for who he really is. He does sound convincing, but after a while, it'll start to ring hollow when she hears that sort of thing. I promise. If we didn't know...well, yeah. With Zar's meeting, with everything, you have to wonder how much of it he arranged. That was sad. I used Zar because, like Bail, he had reasons to believe in a person like Palpatine, so his nomination would make sense and his later disillusionment will be more tragic. Yup, darn spoilers...well, movies... Those feelings are foreshadowing. LOL at your ews! Glad you liked the explanation of the procedure. I liked having her use it in her class, too. Thanks for finding that to be nicely done. I had to put in Jar-Jar. It wouldn't be a TPM fanfic properly done if he weren't at least mentioned. :) Glad it satisfied you. LOL, if you feel sick at that last paragraph, you're going to want to kill me in Book 2. No, none of them are probably sure, but it's like being runner-up in Miss America. If that makes any sense. You pretend that you wanted that person to win all along because you're going to have to work with them. Glad you liked that version. I haven't seen it done before. LOL. Great choice of emoticons. Are you nauseated by everything vaguely romantic? :) Thanks!
Author's note: This is the end... well, of book 1. Each of the movies/time periods will be a separate book as a stand-alone fic. This one has topped out at just under 32,000 and thanks for being here. I will post a link to the new story at the end of this. The five books will be:

Book 1: In Love and Truth (TPM era)
Book 2: Taken for Granted (AOTC era)
Book 3: A Terrible Game (Clone Wars era)
Book 4: I Once Was Blind (ROTS era)
Book 5: Face of Tomorrow (Imperial era)

Cos left during his first night as Supreme Chancellor on a diplomatic vessel bound for Naboo. From all reports, he had taken most of the Jedi Council with him since one of the Jedi ambassadors had been killed in the line of duty. Amne had offered to accompany him, but he had smiled and reminded her that he would be there on business for the first few hours.

She had sighed discontentedly and mused that she would try not to be too lonely until she could join him later that evening. He had given her a kiss and a knowing smile before assuring her that with her new staff, it would be impossible to feel lonely.

Her guard detail was small enough that she had believed him to be joking. He unfortunately was not. Before breakfast was served the next morning, she was introduced to a horde of people including her personal secretary, press representative, image consultant and twelve more guards who were assigned personally to her.

When the first staffer had been introduced, she had naively stammered out a single, bewildered sentence: ?Are you sure this is n

Oh my, this story is equal parts amazing, outstanding, and creepy. It's been thrilling to read this story this afternoon (yes, I read the entire thing in one sitting ;) ) and watch Amne's journey as the intended and later bride of Palpatine of all people. I mean, we all know who he really is, and seeing just how well he keeps his mask up is nothing short of brillance, since his own wife is convinced that they are in love with one another.

I loved how you played everything from Amne's point of view, showing us a life of an ordinary lady who married into extraordinary circumstances and interacts with the main characters of the saga. And this is just the first book. I can only imagine how it might change once time goes by and Palpatine is elected for an actual term and then later, when Padme becomes Senator, and then when the Clone Wars starts.

Of course, it's even more exciting to see just how well and long Palpatine will maintain the illusion of a happy marriage with Amne. Given the prologue, I think I can assume that her final destination is not likely to be a happy one (something all too common for the prequel era characters). It's going to be thrilling to watch her go from the first book where Amne's utterly in love and happy to fifth book where we might finally see just how she came to that exit interview?

Brillant work, Ishtar! Absolutely outstanding. :)

[link=]Wife of Deceit: Taken For Granted[/link] is now up.

RK_Striker_JK_5--LOL, he was kind of sweet. I'm surprised no one has gagged yet at that... :) Glad you liked her helping and at the funeral. Thanks!

Jedi_Eruanne--Aww...being happy for them is...a weird thing that should once in a while happen. And yes, it's very easy to hate him at the same time. Thanks for posting before bed!

Kyana-Morgaine--Thanks, Kyana! :) That's a whole lot of exclamation marks and I appreciate the enthusiasm. He's very manipulative, though right now he's in the stage where he wants to get on the person's good side first, make it feel as if they're on equal ground with him. Things are going to get much, much, much worse even in the next book. You'll see what I mean. Thanks again!

AngelQueen--Wow, thanks. That's equal parts that are hard to pull off in my experience. Thanks! I'm glad you read it in one sitting and still wanted to speak to me at the end. ;) The Bride of Palpatine thing makes me think of the Bride of Frankenstein. Kateydidnt says that's fitting. Glad you liked that journey. Seeing Palpatine's mask in the PT was pretty much the most awesome thing for me, personally. His wife is an idealist for a very long time, which contributes. She believes in the love that he demonstrates. It was a hard decision to put this from only one person's POV since it was so limiting, but definitely gave more of a suspense to it. She's definitely in extraordinary circumstances. I'm looking forward to getting her involved with more saga characters. Yes, the progression of those events are going to be very interesting. As for how long he can maintain the illusion, you'll be surprised. Her final destination is definitely not a happy one, but that is 5 years after the founding of the Empire, so you have to wonder when she tries to get out if at all. Thanks! Thanks! And double thanks!

Alexis_Wingstar--I love new readers! :) Congrats on making it through mostly in one sitting. Thanks for the "extraordinary story weaver" comment. I hope you enjoy book 2.

nabooqueen2008--Yes, I planned it perfectly! ;) LOL, it's getting very comfortable and that means that things are going to go kaboom. At least if I follow my usual pattern. Yes, no one understands enough that this is Sidious. His Sidious side is more manifest in manipulation or in control than anything else. Thanks!

A great ending, Ish!=D= And I already need to rush off to comment on the sequel?[face_mischief]

Before I comment on the last update, I'll deal with a question you asked me:

Are you nauseated by everything vaguely romantic?

My answer is 'Certainly not!'; but we're talking here about romantic stuff involving Palpatine.o_O You know, the man who will set up the evil Galactic Empire and put himself at its head.:-B The fact that I can read romantic stuff about him, despite feeling sick[face_sick] and thinking of the fate that awaits Amne:_|:( when I do is a tribute to your good writing.=D=

    On to the update:

Being First Lady of the Republic means having a lot of hangers-on (sorry, staff!):

Before breakfast was served the next morning, she was introduced to a horde of people including her personal secretary, press representative, image consultant and twelve more guards who were assigned personally to her.

When the first staffer had been introduced, she had naively stammered out a single, bewildered sentence: ?Are you sure this is necessary??

?It may or may not be necessary, Your Ladyship,? the staff protocol officer sniffed, ?but it is customary.?

What was customary was for the outgoing First Lady to warn her about this sort of thing. Even if Valorum had not been widowed five years ago, Amne doubted that they would have bothered with the courtesies usually associated with the transition.

I had wondered if Valorum had a wife who could explain such things to her.[face_thinking] This bit did not surprise me:

?Good morning, Your Ladyship,? the older one greeted with a formal bow. ?I apologize for being tardy, but we were not able to meet you before you left the Consulate.?

Apparently, her enormous new staff was incapable of giving her a schedule.

Interesting to see her being accompanied by Jedi:

?That's all right,? the Master said. ?Strictly speaking, we did not have an appointment. We were simply ordered by the Council to accompany you.?

?I see.? Amne folded her hands, not sure what level of formality was appropriate. ?How long are you assigned to that mission??

?Traditionally, a Jedi team supplements the new Chancellor's staff for a week or so,? the Master explained. ?We tend to see weaknesses in security that can go overlooked and the Council is eager to establish good relations with the new leader and his family.?

That relaxed her somewhat. She was accustomed to Jedi being called out in times of crisis, such as the invasion of Naboo.

Then something interesting I didn't expect:

?We will do our best to improve security,? Zia interjected, ?but the Council is concerned that we help you enhance your defensive skills.?

She grinned. ?I have been fighting off sludgenews reporters for months,? she pointed out. ?I think my defensive skills are fairly good.?

?Physically, yes,? Amia agreed, ?but we would like to do what we can to see that, no matter what form an attack takes, you have an adequate defense for it.?

?I will look forward to it, then,? she said with a slight bow of her head. ?If I can be of any help, please let me know.?

?Yes, Your Ladyship,? they both responded.

    o_O I liked this bit:

    ?Is there anything else??

?Yes,? Amne said. ?If the Jedi are ever on my schedule again, I'd like to hear about it before the meeting. I'm not fond of flailing diplomatically.?

Nena's pale cheeks colored slightly, but she nodded and kept her smile in place. ?Duly noted, milady.?

An interesting description of the funeral. As the Jedi Order would consider its members to be part of one family, I can understand why some Council members would be part of the inner circle. Amne first sees Anakin Skywalker, and overhears something else:

The only face that seemed out of place was a young boy. He could not have been more than ten years old, but obviousl

I have to admit I am an admirer of Palpatine, and therefore somewhat biased, but really, he is fantabulous here! In a scheming, backstabbing, slimery reptilian predator sort of way, but hey, that's why he makes the perfect villain, isn't it? Although there were a few times when I thought he could've done a better job of it (like that smile that almost cost him way too much... a good thing (for him [face_devil]) that he could control himself later), his skill in leading a double life is unrivaled.

I have still not determined wether Palpatine (the first name fits him, in a way, but I somehow don't think Palpatine would feel comfortable with divulging something so personal as a first name, judged from how he seems to have forced everyone to never utter even his last name and concealed all personal details on becoming Emperor...) is seriously in love, or treacherously using her for his own purposes.

In the latter case one must again admire Palpatine's talent for, firstly, finding those people he needs in various posts (C'baoth, Anakin, Doriana, Dangor, Pestage, Jade, und so weiter...) and then manipulating them into his use. The way he drew in Amne looks like a textbook example of Anakin's fall... Which makes me feel very sorry for the poor girl. (BTW, is the similarity between the names Amne and Annie a coincidence? For she seems, in some aspects, a female version of the pre-Jedi_Apprentice_Annie: trusting, enthusiastic, etc..)

The WMD line cracked me up. :)

I was somewhat bewildered by all the sickness emoticons. Is anyone going around gagging and making [face_sick]-faces all over Anakin/Padme-threads? Because it is nearly the same thing: He is a monster, and she does not know it yet. To push that thought, you will find in the Archives several Darth Vader/Padme Amidala 'ships where she agrees and consents to stay and sleep with him. How is this any worse?

And now, Ish, I'm off to start reading the sequel. Keep up the good work! [:D]=D==D=[:D]

    Yours, Alkibiades

    Back for author replies...
KELIA--LOL, but he's a nice little Sith... Sorta. That won't last long. Does that make you feel better? I'm glad you like her accepting her new station. Trying to write these sorts of transitions in characterization is really hard. Thanks!

Kevin_Solo--Awww, your last post on this story. Glad to see you'll be going to the new one and thanks for being here as well. Thanks! GLad you're not nauseated by anything romantic. :) I pretty much did this story because I had four ideas of where the plot would go and I wanted to challenge myself to write Palpatine in a believable romance, even if it was somewhat one-sided by the end. Oh, THAT Palpatine? ;) Well, thanks for the tribute to my writing. I know what hangers-on are. :) Yeah, in the American government, it's very similar, so I went off of that and then went "She's the first lady of a million worlds. *shudder* at the number of staff required." The reference to Valorum's wife being needed to warn her about this is an oblique homage to Sereine Valorum from LLL's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. LOL, that bit was funny to me, too. Whenever I'm at work and want to say that someone's a complete imbecile, I say something that they are "incapable of." The Jedi will be offering occasional protection as the need arises, but I enjoyed creating those characters. What about that surprised you? Glad you liked the bit with Nena. "Nena" is a fond term of endearment for a little girl, so I named her aide that to show a bit of lovable naivete. Glad you like that description of the funeral. It took quite a few perusals of that scene in TPM to work out what my thoughts on the seating arrangement were. It was nice of her and very political, if you take it a certain way. Definitely going to be a trend for everything to come back to politics. I liked having the idea of Padme escaping court life to help with the reparations. It seems to be very her. You have to wonder how long it took for word to get around about who exactly Padme was. Yes, she will soon be quoting Han Solo! ;) Glad you liked the viewpoint of the celebrations. Have I mentioned I enjoy your (!) comments? Pretty much the only function of that intimacy was to set up the sequel's first chapter. LOL at the Ugh! I should hand out Prozac and Kleenex at the door. Thanks! Please continue to comment on the sequel.

Alkibiades--My most sincere thanks for that, Alkibiades. I admire Palpatine as the quintessential villain. Thanks for the 'fantabulous.' LOL at your descriptions. He probably thought that the smile would be interpreted as support of his Queen rather than a fulfilled ambition. Slightly creepifying either way. I will eventually write a story about his ability to lead a double life from the POV of his Palm Pilot. I think it would be a good manipulative tool for him to divulge his name to certain people in order to make them think that he'd trusted them. As for whether he's in love, guess both because you'll have to decide for yourself by the end. As will Amne. He really does have a marvelous talent for that. I'm glad you recognized the parallelism to Anakin's fall. No, it's not intentional for their names to be similar. The name Amne was created because I wanted a Naboo name and that was the first one that sounded right for the character in my head. Only later did I notice that it might give ties 1) to Amnesia and 2) to Ani Skywalker. She is very much like him, though. The WMD line? I agree with you on that comparison. I allowed the sick emoticons so much because I knew that people were in here, reading my story against their better romantic judgment and I thought it was adorable at times.

    Jedi_Eruanne--Already have.
