In the US, the top 5 is: Titanic, Star Wars, E.T., The Phantom Menace, Shrek 2.

If its not Shrek, it will soon be something else that passes TPM and probably ANH as well. Ticket prices, marketing and the huge number of theaters make that a certainty.

It's not anger at all. I just don't like the Shrek films. As for records, Titanic is #1 yes... this thread is about Shrek 2 beating TPM's domestic gross of like $430 million or something.

I could care less. Who do you think I am, George Lucas?

    Yes, yes we do. ;)

Anyway, this actually really does bother me. I mean, every top grossing movie so far as made sense to me, even if I didn't much care for said film. But Shrek 2 coming in so high? That makes as much sense to me as frozen crap outselling chocolate ice cream. Seriously.

But Shrek 2 coming in so high?

Well maybe because the rest of the world has better taste? ;) Overseas box office is like a teardrop compared to North America, I think. (too lazy to check bomojo. [face_devil]

Maybe it's because Dreamworks utterly brainwashed everyone into Shrek-mania. That's why it won the Oscar over the far superior Monsters, Inc.

I liked the first Shrek (still haven't seen the second) but never thought it was good as the hype. I know a lot of people who thought it was the best animated film ever. Far from it. I don't even think it is the best cg film either (can't hold a candle to either Toy Story). But you can't get too caught up in box office numbers. Inflation is one reason. Another is free tickets. Until you work in a movie theatre you don't realize how many people get in free for one reason or another.

It doesn't affect my viewings of TPM at all if another film beats it out. It's still kinda upsetting, though.

Actually, the Academy Awards mean nothing. Neither Alfred Hitchcock nor Stanley Kubrick ever got Oscars for Best Director. ROTK did have a few flaws, IMO, that TPM gets bashed for.

Titanic is like a scar you will always remember if you look into a mirrow thinking "Wha....oh, right".

I'm with you on the Hitchcock thing, Billy, but Titanic was good, maybe not 1+ billion dollar good, but still good.

Well, I like Shrek fine and I'm sure Shrek 2 is very entertaining, but I still am kind of sad that it will most likely beat Star Wars Episode I. It's probably good, but THAT good. And it IS DEFINITELY sad that it beat all three LOTR movies...Urrrgghhh. I'm fine with Spider-Man 2 passing Episdoe I; I love Spider-man. What I really want though, is for some movie to beat Titanic. How the heck did that movie make so much money. It's sickening. Like that other poster, I've never seen it, and hopefully never will(so maybe I don't really have a right to judge it, but from what I know of it I think I can safely say that they're a lot of other movies out there much more worthy of being the big #1 of all time). Thank goodness we still have A New Hope at #2(I think).

If you've never seen Titanic, why are you bashing it? It's a good movie that's suffered from fanboy and media backlash- wow, sounds a lot like TPM to me.

God has made Titanic #1 so that no group of fanboys can have bragging rites.

    Now that's an interesting theory.

Seriously, this Titanic bashing by people who've never seen it makes little sense. It beat all SW movies therefore it must suck?

Although it's not completely accurate, I do think that the all time adjusted list is MORE accurate than simple domestic box office. Boxofficemojo.com has a good list and is a good resource for all things Box Office related.

    1 Gone With the Wind
    2 Star Wars
    3 The Sound of Music
    4 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial
    6 Titanic
    7 Jaws
    8 Doctor Zhivago
    9 The Exorcist
10 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
    11 101 Dalmatians
    12 The Empire Strikes Back
    13 Ben-Hur
    14 Return of the Jedi
    15 The Sting
16 Raiders of the Lost Ark
    17 Jurassic Park
    18 The Graduate
    19 The Phantom Menace
    20 Fantasia

For the record, though, I didn't find the first Shrek film funny or original at all. I never understood all the hype and refuse to get caught up in it to see the second one.

Those were my exact thoughts about the first one and didn't expect much going in to see the second one. Let's just say I was blown away. I luved it. So if it passes TPM, oh well. If it passes Spiderman and LOTR then ha ha because I found those movies to be highly overrated. [face_plain]

    Your fired!

You forgot 5, The Ten Commandments.

You know what I found randomly interesting about this top 20 list? The most prolific actors on it...

Alec Guinness: SW, Doctor Zhivago, ESB, RotJ. He's in 4 of the top 20.

Harrison Ford: SW, ESB, RotJ, Raiders. He's in 4 of the top 20.

Are there any actors in more of the top 20? Interesting ;)

Well how can you really adjust the grosses for inflation? The Star Wars films and some others have been rereleased several times. You would have to adjust what was made in each individual release wouldn't you?
