Just to add to what Mav said, pimping, particularly 'up-ing' a story to the top spot, used to be a big problem. If you go over to the classic JC fanfic board and scroll through some of the older stories, the amount of posts that just say the word UP is both sad and hilarious, but also really annoying trying to get through them to find the next chapter. I can easily find pages that just say UP.

Anyways! I say JOIN!!! You can even say something like, my goal is to write 200 words every day. Short bursts like that only take a couple minutes, but at the end of the month, you've written 6000 words (which, for me personally, is more than I've written in a couple months). Even if you get nothing done, having more people we have participating will increase the likelihood of something like this happening again.

:p You can try, but I'll only put willing participants on the list (though I do COMPLETELY agree with the nomination).

I agree with Bri upping and self-promotion are annoying, but I also find that having a rule so strict that we're not expected to mention our fic in some resource threads (the writer's desk, the OC thread, the fanon thread etc.) is sometimes counter-productive. For instance, when reading the OC thread, I sometimes saw writers talk about OCs for which I had no context at all, and when I did some digging to find out more, they were so prolific that it was a bit discouraging to choose where to start, or in the writers' desk, people ask a question and because you don't know what they're referring to, you end up answering totally out of context. Anyway, this is a discussion for another time and place ;)

Oh, and I agree, Findswoman and ginchy we all want to see your names on that list [:D]

....I will accept the nomination. ;) I fell behind on Nano due to being sick and a general case of the blahs, but I want to keep working on my fics!! I think this is a great idea to get us all motivated and I can't wait to read all the fic that comes out of it!! [:D]

Well, as unworthy as I am to be mentioned in conjunction with the iconic ginchy, how can I resist such pleas from our esteemed mod Briannakin and the fabulous Chyntuck? Please count me in. @};-

I was directed here and enjoined most persuasively by Chyntuck , who is just irresistable ;):p

I'm not sure how far I'll get -- I'm a horribly slow writer coming off a long hiatus from fanfic, and usually busy with family stuff during the Christmas season -- but I'll try!

edit -- Maybe I'm a wuss, but I really like the very low-level, gentle competitiveness of this. Thanks for this, Briannakin :)

Hi, Nyota's Heart ! I'm so sorry to disappoint you, but I'll probably be working on a SW fic; I'm afraid my Tolkien muse is dead :(

LOL, I want to write so bad this weekend, but then I can't count it toward this, so I'm having to restrain myself. :p *gnaws on fist*

Lol. Me too. I have NOTHING to do this weekend and it is so cold that I cant go anywhere, so I REALLY want to write, but I don't want to burn myself out before I even start :p

Yep, that officially makes two of us! *stares at blizzard outside* Well, I can still trade thoughts with the ever-helpful JadeLotus and look up stuff on Wookieepedia, at least.

What the hell. Sign me up. Maybe I can do the 5,000 words of pure fanfic that I had on my resolution list at the last minute. :p

Incidentally, can I count my RPG posts toward this? They are closer to fanfic than true roleplaying, and they are posted here on these boards (in the RPF) where they can be seen.

Good point. And as a former RPGer, I know it is pretty similar to fanfic. So okay, jcgoble3 , I'll allow it.

    Great. :D

I think I'm going to set a personal goal of 20,000 words for the month. It'll be a test run; if I can complete that, then I'll see if I can gear up for a shot at NaNo next year.

I have a personal goal of 10, 000. I haven't written much in a while, but I'm about 1/2 done a "not quite a short story but way too short to be an epic" I'd ideally like to get finished. I have it planned out, but I'm not sure how ADD my muse will be. I have a plot bunny driving me insane and I've been really wanting to write some drabbles, so we shall see.

Ohmigosh, this thing starts tomorrow, doesn't it! :p

So here's a quick question: to what extent can one count reworkings of previously written material toward these word counts? As in, fanfic prose from years ago that one wants to rework into something more coherent and presentable for the present day? [face_thinking]

This is going to be similar to NANO in that you can only really count words written in this month. The purpose for this is to turn off your inner editor and just write. So if you mainly are just editing, I'm going to say none of it, but if you are re-writing entire sections or scenes, that's okay.

Yes, my expectation is that most of it will indeed be fairly heavily reworked and/or rewritten in order to get it to mesh with the newer material. Thanks much, Bri. :)

    Biting my nails in anticipation,
    Finds.
