Jaina's Challenge

I REALLY need to learn to do thumbnails! Anyway... This is the first of many, with any luck. The others I hope to make more "scene specific." Oh, and an update soon, I think!

 

First things first . . . I have absolutely NO idea what's going on. Taat? A ship that can talk - I'm thinking Thomas The Train? Plus Jania and Zekk saying "we" all the time. For a moment I thought "Am I reading a ST: Next Generation fic. Did Picard pick up Jania and Zekk and they're all on a Borg ship right now? Maybe 7 of 9 will stop by for drinks."

BUT I felt horrible for Jania and Zekk, so you have a non-EU person reading this and with out having ANY idea what?s going on I'm feeling the pain and suffering these two young adults are going through. This just tells ya what a great writer you are.

Ah well this is what I get for leaving my Saga board. Keep up the great work Z - at least I think it's great . . . but then again I have no idea whats happening. Maybe I should stop talking. Yeah I'll do that.

Chapter 3: For Jaina?s Sake

I have seen and done many disturbing things in my life, but at the moment they all pale in comparison to what lies before me. I only agreed to escort Jaina to Zonama Sekot because Jacen made it clear that I was her last best hope of surviving the initial separation in hyperspace. The moment is fast approaching, but I can?t seem to clear my head of the last 36 hours and open her door.

I can see him even now, half hidden in the shadows, watching his sister and Zekk. Jacen is an enigma. A pariah. He is very powerful and very disciplined -- and yet he worries me. It seems to me that his five-year absence was, in fact, a search for omnipotence. I doubt he even realizes the danger he is skirting, but trust me when I say, ?Jacen is in trouble.? I mean, who else do we know who was vaguely omnipotent? Yeah, see what I mean?

Lost in thought, trying to give Jaina some semblance of the privacy she did not ask for, I came down the ramp to get the last load of supplies. Jacen caught my eye and smiled knowingly. I couldn?t help myself; I shivered. I also remembered our conversation the night before in my apartments where he had shown up, unannounced, just as I fell asleep. I grimaced as I lifted the heavy box of protein bars. I was trying to forget that conversation! After all, it?s not as if someone walks up to me every day and tells me to have casual sex with his sister.

No, not casual. Nothing about Jacen strikes me as casual anymore. It is dangerous to underestimate him. The carefree boy I used to entertain is gone, eroded away into the stoic apparition who visited me last night.

I rose to answer the door in my sleep pants, irritated because my bare feet were slapping across the cold stone floor instead of in my warm bunk where they belonged, and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes. I was therefore not impressed to find Jacen Solo standing there, patiently waiting for me.

I stared at him for moment before saying in my flattest voice, ?Jacen,? hoping he would take the hint. Humph. No such luck for me.

?Kyp,? he said with a nod, ?may I come in??

I sighed dramatically and raised my eyes to the ceiling before shutting them. I began to recite.

?Yes, Jaina is your only sister. Yes, she is vulnerable right now. No, I will not hurt her, harm her, or deceive her in any way, shape, or form. If I do any of the aforementioned things, you will hunt me down and eviscerate me. Slowly and painfully.? Pausing in my monologue, I opened my eyes and looked down at Jacen. ?Now, if I have covered everything to your satisfaction, I was sleeping.?

I tried to close my door, firmly, in Jacen?s face but found that it would not budge. Jacen just looked at me with that insufferably calm expression -- I swear he is sometimes worse than Skywalker ever was -- and continued to maintain his Force grip on my door.

?Not to your satisfaction, then, I take it. Please, won?t you join me for a night cap?? My sarcasm earned me nothing more than a raised eyebrow.

?No, thank you. Sit down.?

Sitting was easier than arguing, and less arguing meant more sleeping. I sat.

?You were right about Jaina being ?vulnerable? right now.?

?Good!? I started to rise, having no desire to listen to another lecture about keeping Jaina safe. As if anyone could. ?Now we can all get some sleep. If you wouldn?t mind?? Jacen actually almost smiled for some reason.

?I think you may be ?surprised- at what I have to say, Kyp. Now sit back down and listen. This is important.? He stood before me like a lecturing professor, or Leia in a snit, and I groaned inwardly.

?Jaina may be ?vulnerable? right now, but much of her frailty is physiological, not psychological. During Jaina?s time with the Taat, they actually rewired her brain somehow.? Jacen be

As for the story, I am totally intrigued. While I am obviously not a K/J shipper, this Kyp I can handle. And Jacen is starting to freak me out. Like Palpatine level of freaking me out, and I haven't even gotten TUQ yet.

Potential TUQ spoiler: I want to thank you for at least suggesting a possible resolution to the J/Z Joiner relationship. Denning's version of the whole Killik story seems to include a Solo/Skywalker family who don't give a rat's a** about Jaina and Zekk's situation. Unless "The Swarm War" takes an entirely new turn...

I like characters who do care - like your's.

You write from Kyp's p.o.v. very well -- the reader really does feel everything he's feeling. His confusion and desperation are true and very human.

Even though I'm not familiar with this part of the EU, you do a very good job of explaining enough so that no one feels left out without having to go into a lot of heavy-handed exposition.

I'm very interested to see where you take this!

Second, no I don't hate you. I've never heard of sex ranking up there with CPR, but there is a first for everything. But now I just wonder how it is that Jacen knew the only way to save Jaina would be this. That is kind of gross.

But it is your story, and I will gladly follow where you lead.

 

I ditto BF on the non K/J but liking Kyp here.

I can't believe Jacen would ask him to do that. That is just wrong IMO.

I hope Kyp does the right thing which means: No hibitydibity.

Of course you're making me come back to see. You are just pure evil Z, I'm just saying.

But on a different note I'm a big fan of your writing, but you knew that already I think. But in case you didn't, I'll say it now. This was a great read, a wonderfully written post.

 

That was great Z. Granted I have a weird since of humor, but I thought Jacen encouraging Kyp to hook up with his sister was kinda funny. Also both of the guys' reactions were priceless. I really like the way you wrote Kyp; he actually had a sense of humor All in all a great post! I really can't wait to see the next one.

Whoa, Z, very interesting stuff. Jacen has me very concerned, although I do like that in the Dark Nest Trilogy his character is going through some very interesting stuff, and showing off a few new traits as well. You capture his scary knowingness well, especially during his conversation with Kyp. I'm even more worried about Jaina though. I hope Kyp can help her, she seems not in too good of shape.

I have never read the YJK, and you are making me want to - I never really payed attention to Jaina's crazy relationships in the NJO, but you are making it interesting

Kyp and Jaina, then they are going to the Chiss to meet with Jag - Yikes.

What truly bothers me about this Kyp/Jaina thing is that Jaina doesn't really have a choice. Kyp or death isn't much of a choice.

-I hurt my sides laughing at this analogy. And then worried. I will try to explain it clearer in the next post, I guess. There is a logical reason and it has a large part to do with the imcomplete Force bond that Kyp has with Jaina, sexual congress with just anyone wouldn't work. Zekk might have been an option once upon a time if he wasn't Taat and if Jacen wasn't tainted by Taat perhaps this sort of interference wouldn't have been necessary at all because he could have helped her through their bond mentally, he is strong enough to. Anyway, it does make sense in my twisted world and I will try to drag you into it as well. Next time!

But now I just wonder how it is that Jacen knew the only way to save Jaina would be this. Jacen is a thinker and always sees things from a different point of view. I suspect he has thought about this often and isn't happy about his conclusion, either.

Thanks, Wyn! I've found that Jacen's and Kyp's sense of humor as NJO progressed became more and more twisted. Hm. That's probably why I like them so much.

IMHO, since her bonds with Jacen and Zekk are tainted and Jag doesn't have the Force, Kyp is the only one who can! Remember, Kyp has too much experience messing with people's minds. Perhaps he can harness that power for good.

I like the first person angle, as usual. Don't really know a single thing about these characters, but it doesn't seem to matter in your story - it's fascinating anyways.

Like I told oldjedinurse, things aren't always as they seem in this story. Frankly, while I cannot fathom YJK Jacen doing this (he is too idealistic) or even pre-Traitor Jacen, after his stay with the Yuuzhan Vong I can TOTALLY see him making the choice of his sister's life above all other priorities and counting the costs later. He has a precedent of it, even, on Ebaq 9. This is just another step down that same path. He did not esp mourn Vergere's death because it meant his sister lived, you know.

If Jacen truly believes that Jaina will die without the physical and spirtual connection this brings to Force joined Jedi, then he will do everything in his power to ensure that it happens. Of course, Jacen is crafty. We shall see.
