As we know, Lucasfilm is still in the process of selection to find it's film maker for the new Star Wars Trilogy. After reflexion, a thought occured to me: Why not J. J. Abrams?

He is a passionate of Star Wars and Spielberg and know Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm! Could he make Star Wars films? Why not?. It's achievement are very interesting: Star Trek, Super 8 , Cloverfield, Impossible Mission and Tv shows such as Lost, Fringe, Alias, Undercovers so has touch Sci-Fi , action and dramatic kind of movies, shows.

He is available? I am not sure but Star Trek 2 is bound to be released in May this year and after that I don't really know his projects. Surely he could make himself available to make some star Wars?

Thinking about it, I am surprised his name as not come up more often, he seems to me as the kind film-maker that this new trilogy would benefit from.

You must not have seen the whole JJ Abrams turns down Star Wars discussion we've been having for weeks. They asked if he was interested and he said no. Done. I'm glad he didn't want to do it since I think his Star Trek film while okay as a random sci-fi/action film isn't really true to the source material. I'd hate to see him do that to Star Wars.

I'm glad he turned it down. Think of the fan and holy wars that would ignite

Who cares about fan wars. Think of the lens flares...

To be fair though to JJ that was partially because he's such a SW fan he tried to make Trek more like Wars.

But yeah, to the OP, he turned it down.

I was pulling for Brad Bird. But he has 1952 already set up at Disney.

    Oh well.

JJ + lightsabers + penchant for lens flares = one giant flare obliterating the screen.

Could you imagine the flares in the Naboo reactor room for TPM or Kamino?

    Arghh I'm blind!

    Forget 3D glasses....just sunglasses.

Alas I was away from TheForce for some time and I didn't see these conversations. A pity that he declined for I think he was probably the best candidate out there after Spielberg. He could have done something interesting with this new trilogy.

Darth Chiznuk To be fair, with Star Trek he was told by Paramount to sort of reboot the franchise and make it ''younger'' and more accessible to a broad public so that include non-Trekkies viewers.

What?! You surely can't mean that JJ's Trek could in any way be influenced by Star Wars! That's crazy talk! :p

Judging by how Star Trek was structured, I don't think he'd be the best fit. One of the really cool things about Star Wars is the level of detail put into the setting and how the action in Star Wars was allowed to slow down to let you soak it in. You got the feeling that all the aliens in the background we're actual guys going about their lives and not living props.

The new Star Trek moved too fast and focused so much on action and interplay that it glossed over the universe the movie was set in. I didn't get a feel that it was a real vivid universe that I was looking at.

That could only be because he was focused on selling Star Trek to new viewers, but I kinda want the new filmmaker to capture the scope of the other movies.

That was my problem with the film. Star Trek isn't Star Wars and shouldn't be written as such. Star Trek is its own entity and an entity that should have been respected. JJ Abrams might show more reverence to the source material if he had a chance with Star Wars but I wouldn't want to take the chance and I certainly don't think his visual style is compatible with SW.

Which is probably why I liked ST (2009) the best out of all ST material. It had a very Star Warsy adventure film feeling to it, and the characters were made fresh and interesting.

And this is coming from a casual ST fan who has seen most everything ST (except much of DS9 and Voyager).

So, do I think he could have turned out a terrific SW product? Hell yes! Too bad he turned it down.

I'm incredibly glad he's not directing - everything he touches turns to crap.

The fact that he said "no" doesn't mean anything in Hollywood. Zack Snyder also said "no" but few weeks later he flew to KK and pitched his 7 Samurai idea. Although I love J. J. I doubt that he'll be part of two huge sci-fi franchises as Star Trek and Star Wars. I think J. J. will have enough time for one movie between Star Trek 2 & 3 and it will be Jurassic Park 4. :)
Still I would love if he directs Episode IX after he finishes Star Trek 3.

While on the subject of directors, since there aren't any threads dedicated to potential directors... why not Cecile B DeMille?

I dont dislike JJ Abrams but I think he has limitations and can be overly derivative and nostalgic. That's enjoyable to a point, but I think for SW we need someone not so "inside" if you know what I mean. Also why I wasn't a huge fan of Whedon doing it. It's almost like they love the originals so much they couldnt help themselves and might end up making a highly self-referential movie.

Why not Alfred Hitchcock? I liked his work for Veritgo, Rear Window, and that obscure little psychological drama, Psycho.
