PT Why didn't Dooku just betray Palpatine at the last minute?

Seriously. It's shown in the Clone Wars his relationship with Palpatine was already at a low, and he even plotted to destroy him. So when Palpatine blatantly betrayed him, why didn't he just yell Palpatine was Darth Sidious, or say "Master, what are you doing?" to inform Anakin?

It makes no sense.

Because Dooku is a gentleman and accepts his defeat. Anakin defeated him.
He was proven to be not good enough.
Why would he reveal Palpatine's identity?
And: Dou you really think Anakin would have believed him at that point? No.

A gentleman!? He betrays the Jedi, tries to have Padme murdered, lies to Obi-Wan's face and starts a galactic war, he is far from a gentlemen.

From what it looks like in the scene he is shocked and speechless. If you read the novelization Dooku can see Anakin bursting with fury and Force power, he knows his demise is here. What could he have truly accomplished by betraying Sidious? At that point Dooku thought Anakin to be a Jedi; by which I mean he would never cross the line into killing an unarmed opponent. Had he yelled out and accused Anakin's best friend the Chancellor of being a Sith Lord he would have spurred Anakin's anger and made it all the more likely to die.

If Anakin had believed him (which is highly unlikely), there he would be severely handi-capped in a room with the Chosen One of the Jedi Order barely containing his fury/power, and the personification of the dark-side in Palpatine..who he had just tried to betray. Something tells me he wouldn't have walked out of that alive.

I think at that point when he was at Anakin's mercy Dooku simply realized that after a lifetime of dominating others he had played the game and lost. Treachery is the way of the Sith.

Was there anything that Dooku could have said, to stop Anakin from chopping his head off?
I'm thinking, nothing mattered. Anakin wanted him dead more than Palpatine did.

Sidious just goaded him over the moral hump.

you're saying this like Anakin was already a Sith at this point or like a Maul character. He wasn't.

The scene itself showed Anakin was conflicted "I shouldn't".. even the look on his face was conflicted, then was the perfect time to say something..anything..

I know in the minority on this, as a lot of people have no problem with this scene, but to me it's just another hashed scene in which in my opinion was the worst film in the PT

Maybe he cared enough about Sidious' master plan to not rat him out.

 

Because George Lucas didn't feel it was time for Anakin to know the truth yet...Duh..

 

I've thought about this myself. I guess I go with the option that Anakin would have killed him no matter what he says, and also Christopher Lee's input that Dooku wouldn't beg for his life. I think him kneeling there looking sorry for himself is actually a great role-reversal where Anakin has become the dominant or scary one in contrast to their last encounter.

Just watching ROTS at the moment, and I was just wondering if this point has been discussed... anyone notice how quiet Palpatine is (on the Invisible Hand) when Obi-Wan is listening? The only thing he says before Obi-Wan is knocked out is "Count Dooku." When Obi-Wan is out cold he then turns into "manipulative Sith" Palpatine, with comments like "He was too dangerous to be kept alive", Do it!", "It is only natural. He took your arm, you wanted revenge. It wasn't the first time, Anakin", "Leave him or we'll never make it!" Then as soon as Obi-Wan is awake, Sidious is silent again, for example while trapped in the rayshields and on the deck of the Invisible Hand. It's seems like a neat touch, and re-enforces the importance of Obi-Wan going to Utapau, where he cannot help Anakin deal with the pressure of Sidious' manipulation, among other things.
Off-topic, something I thought about the scene where they first confront Grievous after being captured. The moment Palpatine looks around when they first arrive. It's like he is inspecting the progress of everything that he has set up. Kind of funny. You can tell he doesn't respect Grievous too.

 

Anakin was so oblivious though, that even if Dooku did mutter something like that under his breath or say something with the word "master" in it, I feel that Anakin would totally look over it. Either that, or Dooku knew the greater plan for the Sith and felt that he was unworthy to be trained by Sidious, seeing as he lost in a duel against Skywalker.

 

Agreed. Even though Sidious set it up as a duel for Anakin to take Dooku's place, power dictates all. It's not like it wasn't a fair fight. Anakin beat Dooku fair and square, in Sith tradition Dooku is no longer worthy to continue as Sidious' apprentice.

 

Exactly, that was Sith logic. Especially since the plan was to only have two at a time, Palpatine and an apprentice. Dooku proved himself to be nothing more then worthless.

 

Why? Because Christopher Lee didn't want Count Dooku to beg for his life. That's why.

 

This. Dooku was supposed to beg for his life in the original script, but Christopher Lee said it was hopelessly out of character and refused (actually refused, it seems) to do it. George Lucas then had the scene changed at his request.

 

Amazing. The dude actually played Dooku on screen for a total of like 30min in both films combined. Suprising how much influence he had. If I was GL and an actor refused to follow my script I'd just go out and find another old guy with white hair.

 

Why bother waiting until the last minute? Why not just kill him as soon as he has him in a vulnerable position?

According to the opening crawl, the Republic is crumbling. So why not just kill Sidious and win the war for yourself?

 

He had a vision of the future, and realized the fans would get to see a Sith begging for his life in 2013, so it was all good.

 

Wut?

First, Christopher Lee was right, Dooku wouldn't beg. Second, more people needed to stand up to George when something was bad. What George didn't need was more yes men.

Replacing Lee would have been incredibly stupid.

 

Do you believe that Sidious every discussed his plans in depth with Dooku or any of his apprentices? Of course he didn't, he let them know what they needed to know and no more. If Dooku had thrown him self to the top of the tree, he wouldn't have known how to play out the rest of the plan.

 

Lee and Guinness both appear to have had quite a bit of influence on Lucas regarding character and plot. It's good that he takes opinions on board, maybe more of the crew should also start doing it especially regarding some of the comic-relief (Jar-Jar was OTT, and the bit with C3PO's head on the battle driod - Why, just why?)

Why doesn't OB1 force choke Dooku or force push him to the ground while Anakin is fighting him? Instead he just lays there and watches.
