Bah, I still contend IM2 is way better than most give it credit for. I'd still rather rewatch IM2 than most other superhero movies, except for maybe 6-10 others.

The first IM already gave hints of the Mandarin, but instead we got someone who only showed up for 2 pages in the comic. What?!

IM2 also picked the wrong villain.

Yes, I think we've proven that their "cinematic universe" is as consistent as particularly holey swiss cheese, even with some modern day masterpieces and some huge misfires. Nothing cohesive to talk about yet, sadly.

Or, to put it in DC lingo: holy mismatched superheros, Batman!

PS - the "Holey, rusted metal, Batman" line in Batman Forever was the single-greatest in-joke in all of the Burton films, I think.

Is it possible to make movies focus on villains, introduce their downfall like SW prequel?

I'd totally watch a Sinestro downfall movie... but ideally that would be Green Lantern 2 ala Incredible Hulk.

But beyond that I don't want to see a Joker origin or Lex Luthor slowly amass a business empire. Unless they cast John Hamm as Luthor in which case I'll just assume Mad Men is his rise to power.

So it would have to basically be badly acted and turn you off the original films, then, Slowpokeking?

I think audiences would be open to it- it would be a nice change of pace (much like how SuperMax would have been) to distinguish itself.

And villains are often more interesting than the heroes- depending on the character, it might be a nice 180 to start with the villain in the first film and leverage him to introduce the hero in the sequel instead of vice versa as is so often the case.

I think Ras' Al Ghul/Talia in Nolan Trilogy could also be a nice choice.

-It wasn't a hint at a crossover. It was a nod to Nolan's Batman and the DC Universe as a whole. It wasn't meant to be "you think you're the only super hero," but merely an added layer of texture, if you cared.

-I hate (what I have now learned is known as) "stingers." It was AWESOME after Iron Man, because I wasn't sure. It was like a separate moment just to say, "yes. we are doing this." And it's not like it hasn't been fun here and there....... but I'm sick of it. Make your film complete then roll credits. I don't want to feel forced into sitting for an extra 10 minutes just to get a borderline worthless 30 second hint that should either be tacked onto the end of the actual movie or be gone. I am so glad Nolan never did that (and I don't think a film that takes itself seriously as a film would) and I am glad Man of Steel did not bow to the pressure of the Pavlovian masses. (that said, I know I can simply leave if I like. :p But I'm a completist!!!!!!!!)

-That was no hint/promise. That was a campy joke. It was, at most, a more overt version of what Man of Steel did, which is provide a context.

-See, what everyone is forgetting is that Marvel had the benefit of having The Ultimates in hand, which included the ideas on how to make it work and a vision for what a legitimate Avengers movie could look like. All-Star comics crashed and burned before someone could provide DC with the same, which I suppose is DC's own fault, but it did produce one of the greatest comics of all time, so hey. It's all good.

    edit: on the GL "stinger"-

I hated that. I loved that.

The movie they hinted at was, in that 10 seconds, twice the movie they showed before the credits, and they blew it with GL by saving their best for second. But that's ok, because if they had done it right it wouldn't have been as good as the next GL film that learns from this one, gets it right, and doesn't have a silly looking domino mask.

Again, though, all those are basically Easter eggs. They could be ignored even more easily than the "stinger" at the end of Iron Man. They don't really do anything to build a shared universe in a way that 80% of the film's audience would ever recognize. They are there for fans who were looking, or for the studio to use to validate a claim of long term strategy after a successful Avengers film.

EDIT: As for a villain-focused movie, it could work. The good parts of X-Men: First Class were basically lifted from the unfilmed X-Men Origins: Magneto. But it actually has to be a good story. One about Liam Neeson's take on Ras. . .wouldn't be.

At the risk of sounding schoolmaster-ish, you should be sticking around for the credits.

Yes, I know it sounds silly. But it's something an English Lit professor once pointed out to me at university, something that is always in the back of my mind when the credits start to roll: sticking around for the credits shows some appreciation for the people who basically put the better part of a year, or at least months, of their lives into your past two hours or so of entertainment. People like the director, producer, and lead actors obviously get handsomely compensated for their time, certainly ... but given credits usually amount to two to three full minutes of nothing but people's names, every film is, to coin a phrase, a cast of thousands. Each of those people did their best in often inclement conditions under insane timelines, working 12 to 14 hour days, to create the piece of art that you just watched. True enough that some movies suck: but invariably these are because of poor direction, poor acting, or poor screenwriting, not because the key grip didn't do his job well, and not because each and every one didn't work damn hard to do their part to make the movie. These people are all but anonymous. They get paid, but not great. Most will never even get a look in on the damn "Making Of" mini-documentary. Some -- stuntmen in particular -- literally put their lives on the line for your entertainment, and some, as with Dark Knight, literally die doing it. The credits are the only standing legacy they have that they did anything at all on the film, and they deserve (literally) their moment in the sun. By staying, reading the names, you at least acknowledge their existence. It's a principled thing to do, sure, and it's often hard to do because the ushers often are looking darkly at you from the aisles while you sit there after the movie's over, but those people need their recognition too.

I shouldn't have said crossover, but the promise or indication of a shared universe.

What's wrong with giving an incentive for people to stay for the credits/rewarding them for doing so? "You're willing to give some acknowledgment to the people who made this, great, here's something for you- thank you.".

Movies have done the for quite awhile (Masters of the Universe comes to mind and even TPM tucked away a little bonus (albeit not a true stinger) at the end of the credits.) though they've obviously gained in popularity over the last 10 years or so. Comedies (Austin Powers, Ferris Bueller, Harold & Kumar) and horror films (Evil Dead remake) do it most often, but I think people have come to expect them from comic films (X3 did it before Marvel made it common practice with Iron Man) as well as event blockbusters (the Pirates Trilogy's stingers were probably the more important to the plot, though the Fast & Furious series has picked up on that trend).

Sometimes there are more practical reasons to have a stinger- something you want in there but don't want to end with so your film can end on a particular note.

Maybe because it would be, oh, I don't know, interesting, to see how Nolanverse Ras' came to be what he was in Batman Begins?

Posted essentially what I was going to say in response to that post, except replace "the better part of a year, or at least months" to "a few months to several years". Well said, sir.

You are basing it on the concept of the Star Wars prequels, which means it has to suck the originality, soul and joy out of the original. Let's leave it alone.
