Hey guys its now my job to bring you Star Wars comic book news and I wanted to announce Knights of the Old Republic Volume 1 is set to release August 28, 2013 and KOTOR Volume 2 is set to release December 18, 2013. Watch this video to get all the details of the KOTOR Omnibus Volume 1 and 2:
great story, great artwork, great characters and great twist at the end. seriously whats not to like about the KOTOR series, comics and videogame.
The best SW comic book ever. Also the only one that made me move from collections to single issues because it was so great. If money isn't a concern, I'd like to add that the previous collections keep the original format while the omnibus thingees scale the pages down a bit. Or am I mistaken about that?
I agree with u about the single issues. i have most of the single issues myself but i love the omnibus system and im a SW fanatic so im getting the omnibus anyway. i love each issue and love the covers and artwork a lot. Ur right the previous collections keep the original format and the omnibus is a smaller format but if ur new to omnibus and like the old volume feel or single issues, by all means dont get the omnibus and keep with the volumes or the separate comic issues. with the omnibus they collect more and help save u money. this omnibus collects 3 of the kotor volumes which are $20 each and with this omnibus its $25. so ur saving $35. its not a concern to me but i just wanted to point that out.
I definitely like the idea of making this available for people who'd rather not buy 9 trade collections at full price. Who knows, maybe one day when I've run out of books and comic books waiting to be read I might get something from the Omnibus system that I'm missing. I read a good comic classics overview series in digest format years back (including some classic superhero stuff, Smurfs, Lucky Luke, but also Blueberry and Eisner). Scaled down like hell and on cheap paper, but a good story survives every format. And KOTOR is a good story, the best. Just in case the thread hasn't made that clear yet.
KOTOR was decent, excellent beginning and end but a lot of its middle was kind of mediocre, and the overall development was severely hampered by it being so truncated near the end, not that that's the fault of the comic itself. But KOTOR: War was absolutely terrible, both on its own merits and on the fact that it diminished the excellent ending to the original run.
Dude i felt the same way but as I read it again it was a lot better and a great series and if u read it all the same time instead of separately it makes more sense. near the end it got really boring and repetitive like issues 36-46 were crap but the ending was really good (47-50). as for 'War' the writers got tempted with there fanbase to bring back zayne and it ended up being a one-dimensional story about zayne instead of the other characters around it which made the series great and it FAILED. I believe War didnt exist in my opinion and end the series. issue #50 ended the series and that had an excellent ending at that.
u know i felt the same as u did when they created the series and i refused to buy it and i actually got into it by the 20th issue and started reading it from the beginning and thought it was ok. and at first i didnt like how they didnt put more cameos of the characters from the kotor videogame but I ended up liking the series because the cast feels similarly like the Kotor videogame and u ended up growing a connection to them. "U never know if u like it, if u dont give it a try." Thats what I always say. Seriously if u read this entire series from beginning to end I think u will like it and the omnibus' will help at that. U should give KOTOR Omnibus Volume 1 a try, buy it and read it and if u dont like it, just stop it altogether. I read the entire series 2-3 times now and i will have to say Omnibus Volume 1 will be the best in my opinion (i know what the Omnibus contains). Volume 2 is great too. and I think Volume 3 will be a stinker, just my take on that.
Yeah i love the idea of the Omnibus because ur making it more convenient to the buyer and ur getting ur moneys worth with each book. and people who never read the kotor series, these Omnibus' should be the first thing they buy and it will definitely get them invested into the series. I have read Omnibus since the Tales of the Jedi Omnibus when it first came out in like 2003 and I didnt like it but then they had more and more Omnibus books and they just grew with me and learned to deal with it, u get accustomed to them quickly, just in my opinion. Best SW series as a whole I have read, i totally agree.
That was a common reaction back in the day, and it is true that the 35 issue Covenant arc centering on Zayne feels more intense and immediate than the 15 issue Crucible arc (no, not the Crucible ARC, you novel readers) concentrating on Jarael's story (but still very much from Zayne's point of view). But dude. In itself, #38 is fantastic. Best art possible and a story that manages to be self-contained and great in just one issue. Concentrating on a character that's essentially a non-character for the entire series and just tying him in into the whole thing. Overall, the second arc's biggest problem is that its ending needed to wrap up everything extremely fast. There's a lot of info dumps that would surely have been worked in more seamlessly if the arc could have taken 30 issues instead of just 15. Therefore you have a beginning that takes its time, simply moving through a few cons, and an ending that tells you a novel's worth of plot and drama per issue in comparison. And what's worse, the 'uneventful' beginning comes straight after the epic, epic Covenant conclusion that feels like it could have ended the series and everyone would have gone home with a warm, fuzzy feeling. But that's just it: #36 is a clean slate. It's the opening of the next game, of the next novel. It's supposed to start slow. In that regard, if they end Omnibus #2 with issue #35 and have an entire Omnibus for the other arc, that other arc will feel much more natural. Back then, we were really spoiled by having had a run of 7 pretty plot-intense issues - 7 months! - and then going into the next issue just the next month. And if I remember correctly (I didn't really follow the first year of discussion since I was waiting for the TPBs) the very first issues were also frowned upon by some as too slow and too uneventful. But slow or not, unvenetful or not, what do these comics always get right? The characters. And the tastefull tie-ins to the games (#42 doesn't have a lot going for it but OMG is it truly that guy appearing and a bit of well-done character interaction/smooching). Now, what happened with War? Dark Horse happened, if you ask me. At the time War came out, we were all pretty much burned. Two monthly series had just been axed prematurely. Instead, we got a bunch of arcs coming out now and then, and we didn't know what would stick. We knew War wouldn't stick around, even if we hoped for a second arc after a break. So War ended up as just a bit more Zayne, this time pitted against an enemy that would have been better suited for a longer plot - that way, he would also have been a better foil for Zayne's character to work and grow against. And more importantly - it's Zayne with a new bunch of strays around him. Those could have been established as his new NPC party, but they didn't have enough time. So, if War had been a new series with a new supporting cast, it would have been a much better reading experience. The way it is, there's too much expectation that it's an epilogue, but then it would have needed everything that made KOTOR great and its uncle in it, like a successful movie adaptation bookending a TV show. And while I don't feel like Cathar and mustachioed navy officers visually appeal to me, I'd never have thought that a Snivvian would be a great main character, either, but look how that turned out. Boy, do I want to read KOTOR now. Who's up for one of those marathon things? Becca! Where are you?
Hey man Amen to all u said, I totally agree with all your points. After issue #35 which ended fantastically but glad they didnt end the series entirely. The writers after issue #35 tried to make Jarael seem like this mysterious, evil character at a later life but at that point (from the reader's perspective) u didnt feel it, u know who she is. She was Zayne's best friend (and more lol) and she kicked ass when needed. And a great, strong female character. I felt everything leading to issue #35 was incredibly thought of and planned especially for the videogame. What with the extermination of Serocco and going back to Taris and interacting with the Swoop Gang and battling it out with the Mandalorians there. Let me just say as a KOTOR fan of the comics and especially the videogame. As a fan of the videogame my favorite level was Taris and it was the FIRST level, wtf, i know but the level helped set up everything later on and the MUSIC, my god the MUSIC was freaking EPIC!! I get chills whenever I listen to taris music now, its so awesome. And whenever I read issues #1-6 the first part where there in Taris I feel the Taris music from the videogame playing in my head while Im reading this and feel that was the most memorable and felt its good to be back in Taris. Even after #35 I still loved the series and die with the series because the same as u said, I loved the characters and I love there interactions with one another. I didnt like the snivian at first but I grew to like him. He and Zayne have the funniest dialogue with one another and it freaking works. one of the best duo in comics. Can u believe it?! its not some duo helping killing off a hoard of whatever but 2 smart dudes that dont have the physical tools but have the brains to outwit ANYONE. Like i said before #36-46 were the worst part of the series but #42 was the only good part and it was a one part and helped set up characters like zayne, jareal, rohlan (u know what i mean) and especially malak. i always got giddy when i see characters from the videogame in the comics. when carth first appeared, i knew it was him instantly and I'm like, Yeah I know this guy and hes awesome (the voice actor for carth was great, hes need to do more stuff, seriously). oh and fell in love with him as a female (nothing wrong with that lol). Issue #50 was a great ending and felt im now finally done with KOTOR and felt accomplished in reading this series. War had a rushed new cast but the thing is I didnt want a new cast, I liked the old cast fine and wouldnt mind see them all come back for one big reunion. i would loved seeing jareal and the snivvian at least. But other than boy, did u get me PUMPED for reading the KOTOR series all over again!!! Seriously thanks for the talk. I love the feedback and I love interacting with people who just love SW like I do. idc what other people say, I LOVE THE SW EXPANDED UNIVERSE. Im actually going to do a review of all 3 KOTOR Omnibus' on Youtube so please stick around for that. Check out those reviews when they come out and give me your feedback. I can't wait for all 3 KOTOR comic Omnibuses to come out! I've read parts and pieces of them but want to see how they all come together.
I liked KOTOR very much. The only thing I would have liked even more would be if KOTOR: War was released a little bit sooner. That way, the series would have ended with an even bigger climax.
Thank god for Omnibuses then huh? I recently read all of the old Clone Wars Comics and they were amazing.
Oh, I don't need the Omnibuses - I have the TPB set, ditto for Clone Wars - trick is finding the time to fit in a re-read!
Nope. Kotor was written by Drew Karpyshan and the rest of the Bioware team, and Kotor 2 was Chris Avelone and Obsidian's work
"In my experience, there's no such thing as luck." Nah, I just make it a policy to try to grab series as they come out in trade due to scanning the solicits, tends to be the easiest way!
I've focused on getting the books for so long that I've only made a minor attempt to collect comics until late last year since they are more expensive than the books. I've just stuck to getting stuff at the Barnes and Nobles's near me that I will have to go online soon to get the ones out of print soon.
There's one big difference I've found between books and tpbs: The latter tends to go out of print far faster than the former! Especially once you factor in paperback editions. Of course, books sell better hence incentivising the continuance of items in print.
