Why? Ghosts don't know essence transfer and they remain attached to locations and objects.

Plagueis dismissed those ghosts as illusions, implying (to me at least) that he doesn't know how to become one.

The book ends with Palpatine, the droid of Plaguies (11-4D) and the alleged dead body of Plagueis in the penthouse of Hego Demask (Darth Plagueis), it doesn't say what happened to the body.

I don't recall anything in the novel being said about essence transfer (but I may have missed that part).

I think it would be cool if Darth Maul had a twin brother who wanted revenge on the jedi for killing his brother and against the sith for not allowing maul to become a true sith lord. This twin is not in touch with the force but is extremely skilled with a black, double-bladed lightsaber that can detach and be used as two lightsabers too. He attempts to kill all force users. This would help satisfy a desire for more maul than we got and would give us a fresh, non-sith villain.

As Darth Archimage mentioned in the post above, the Plagueis novel doesn't go into detail into what happened to the Muun Sith Lord's body following his demise, other than that it was supposedly interred by the IGBC (though the sourcebook Beware the Sith indicates that Plagueis' cremated remains were contained in one of Palpatine's spirit urns). While the novel only mentions that the knowledge of transfer essence was lost when Darth Gravid destroyed numerous Sith holocrons and repositories of knowledge, Plagueis' personal notes in Book of Sith suggest that he does know about the concept of essence transfer (he relates the consciousness as an energy pattern that can theoretically be preserved and implanted onto the neural pathways of a different brain), although not necessarily how to perform it.

While Plagueis dismissed the idea of Sith spirits in life, his spirit could well latch onto (after)life, and ironically end up in the Chaos he had dismissed as myth.

Would the Sith even exist post-ROTJ if there's a non-Sith saber-wielding villain? Then again, an alliance of Jedi and Sith would be interesting.

    Also, welcome to TFN.

One simply becomes a ghost. You don't necessarily have to learn anything. Notice the word "transfer" is key here. Plagueis might not know how to transfer his essence to something desirable, but that doesn't mean his soul just stops existing.

Are you suggesting that ghosts are ghosts (not Jedi ghosts) because they train to become them ahead of time?

I am suggesting that there's something you have to do to become a ghost. If everyone became a ghost upon dying, why did Exar have to drain the Massassi?

How do we know for certain that the ashes in this urn are the remains of Plagueis and not some other stooge that Plagueis had to have cremated at his funeral?

If Plagueis did fake his own death, he would still have to go into hiding, and Hego Demask would still have to have a ceremony to keep up the facade.

You raise an interesting point though. Let's say he really was killed. It would be ironic if he ended up in this Chaos realm, held in limbo, maybe trying to find his way back throughout the ST.

All of this awesome talk about Plagueis is going to make me extremely disappointed if the villain is in fact someone else. Good stuff going on here. Hopefully on the 30th they announce the cast and the villain.

I find it more likely that they'll market Plagueis's apprentice and leave Plagueis himself a surprise. Speaking of which, Plagueis having a female apprentice would be cool.

So long as he's rocking the ROTJ style robes and not his Sith Pope smock, I'm OK with that. More McDiarmid can never be totally bad.

Are Sith apprentices usually chosen (not counting Darth Maul, of course) from noble or wealthy families?

I don't think there's any usual besides choosing the most evil person in existence.

At first I wasn't a fan of the cloned Plagueis double idea but the more I think about the more I think it could be intriguing. It connects the ST with the PT and also brings up an interesting question: can midi-chlorians be cloned or is there some quality to them (mystical or otherwise) that causes them to break down if someone tries. That could be interesting to explore. So say Plagueis did clone himself and went into hiding to avoid the Chosen One. Palpatine dies and his secret apprentice is left with no mentor to teach him. He'd be in the same spot that Luke was in after ANH and so in a bit of mirroring to Luke's story he finds a new master on some dark world in Episode VII. Plagueis trains him and they begin to plot their revenge.

Another idea that popped into my mind as I was writing this is they could take a small element from the OT like the dark cave on Degobah and expand on it in the ST to reveal that something more was going on then what Yoda told Luke. I've always found it interesting that this evil cave is on the same planet that Yoda just happens to pick as his hiding spot. What is it? Where did the darkness inside it come from? It's never been explained and so it could be used again for any number of reasons. What if it was one of Plagueis' secret laboratories? Or perhaps the dark side essence in the cave comes from Plagueis' own spirit that resides inside. Or maybe it's the place of Plagueis' ultimate experiment where he took Shmi Skywalker and created the Chosen One and that could explain why Luke feels familiar with the planet. That would be pretty creepy.

Makes you wonder what GL had in mind when the cave scene was written.

That's interesting, I like that... Lucas likes for history to repeat itself and for Palpatine to become a Force ghost and continue training his apprentice would definitely mirror Luke's journey. Then Plageuis would reveal himself and become the Yoda to the Sith disciple, yes...

The baddies would follow the OT pattern for the first half of the saga while introducing us to the new heroes and non-Force threats and storylines. It'd be classic Star Wars. Then it goes up another level (!!) when we realize, wait, if Plageius is still alive, then he has somehow achieved immortality and for that matter... how will Palpatine be dealt with once and for all? There would be three separate struggles: (a) another phantom menace, (b) a Force user more in tune with it than Yoda, capable of manipulating life and death (which could feed into the final point) and (c) that the threat goes beyond the mortal world. That's just the Force-based ones. Really so much potential...

I think there's a good chance now that the villain of the piece may be Darth Vader again...

    I don't remember it.

Whatever the case, the Jedi better not incorrectly think that the Sith are extinct again. It would be pretty stupid of the Jedi to make that mistake twice.

Well, the Sith were extinct, at least temporarily, but more Sith can always appear, even if only as fallen Jedi.

I'm not sure what you mean. The Jedi didn't know in the PT because the Force was tipped towards the darkside. It wasn't a "mistake." They simply couldn't sense the Sith.

That could happen again in the ST, unless 1) the Sith are less powerful or 2) the Sith are more overt and attack the Jedi or Republic directly.
