What "risk"? They could cast a cardboard cut out of James Dean as the leading young jedi and the film would still make a zillion dollars. There is no "risk" just because a, gasp, black actor was cast in a leading role in a film guaranteed to break the box office.

The actors ages in real life doesn't mean they're playing characters in the same age bracket. Hint: Mark Hamill is now almost 10 years older than Luke.

Also Gleeson and Driver especially look young enough to play characters born within the first couple years after Jedi.

Note also the lovely symmetry that both were born the year Jedi was released.

Baker, Daniels, and Mayhew are probably only going to actually be inside their respective suits for close-ups and shots of limited movement.

Very exciting! Episode VII is actually happenning, wooooooooooo!!!! (Yeah, I've just processed it.)

I think Andy Serkis is playing the magnificent role of elderly Jar-Jar Binks, the wizened and trusted Chancellor of the New Republic.

Max Von Sydow might be playing the rumored Imperial officer who had been at Endor. He might have a strict sense of honor, but he's being used by the villain played by Driver.

I don't think Sydow's playing Plaguies, I mean he died long before Episode VII (if what Palpatine said wasn't just a lie to lure Anakin to the Dark side), but Darth Maul's been resurrected too, and Plaguies had wanted immortality, so who knows?

I really hope so - but with the rumours about the new blood playing second-fiddle to the OT characters, I'm not so sure.

Even if it was a case of "let's just make them more visible as mentors for the new generation", as I suspect it was, I worry that the implication will be more of running for help from mummy and daddy - not the best way to introoduce a new set of heroes.

    Baker is still pretty ceremonial...

This is exciting, you guys! I wonder who Andy Serkis will be playing? The dude is so talented, he can slip right into almost any role methinks.

Agreed... I'm a little weirded out by the—let's say—guarded tone many seem to be taking re:Boyega's casting.

Either way, I hope this movie is at least a PG-13 movie. That means no Ewoks.

Why is Boyega the star here? Shouldn't we assume that the main characters would be Solo's kids? I do not think that Han and Leia's kids would be black.

Yes, but Von Sydow's franchises are from decades past, and Gleeson probably had less than 10 min of total screen time in the two Harry Potter films. Serkis, on the other hand, was a major focal point of his franchises.

I hope you are not referring to me. I would love if the main hero is black or a woman.

Just because I love the movies doesn't mean I'm going to blindly follow them or the Director like some of the rest of you and not criticize things I don't like about them.
Stick to your original ideas. A lot of his original ideas are awesome. Stick to them. What's the old saying? Stick with your gut instinct? Treatments from 1983/4? I'd wager he has changed that several times since then.
Lucas is a consultant. I'm cool with that. Keep to his story, cool. Hope I like if not I have a back up in the NJO.
I am happy that there is new Star Wars but I'm not blindly following his wishy-washiness.

Weren't there supposed to be youtube videos being started from today? I wonder if they are anything to do with this or it'll be something completely random.

Or, at least, if there are Ewoks, we see them in their true cannibalistic form...

Just as Palpatine made his entrance in the second film, I'd like to see a Sith master, played by Charles Dance perhaps, emerge in Episode VIII.

Besides Emperor was the puppetmaster type anyway that is not really something u tend to see with heroes. Not to say u cannot get new heroes later on but I dont see them not showing up at all in Ep 7 and taking over as lead hero.

My guess is the website crashing then having load problems delayed the release.

Please remember, if a movie does not meet your expectations, the fault is usually with the expectations, not the movie.

The only "risk" with Boyega will be whether he is completely unrelated to any other character. Or just the son of Lando. I'm hoping for an original.

Already this guy has been called every shade of ugly, not so subtly called a mere diversity hire, and a few in this thread alone still seem unable to even admit that he's one of the young LEADS.

But at the end of the day he got the role, he's going to be cemented in the pantheon of Star Wars forever, and his career just might be about to skyrocket into the stratosphere if he can make the post SW jump. He's got to be on cloud 9, and the naysayers can only dream of having such an opportunity. This is a good day for this guy, one of the best he'll ever know.
