Right, which is why I have less of a problem with his casting because his personal likeness is less recognizable to Joe Moviegoer.

Hmm... I'm hoping for a Solo or Skywalker daughter as the lead, with Boyega not becoming a villain.

    Interesting cast.
Particularly excited about Max Von Sydow. He's great in whatever he's in, be it The Seventh Seal, Flash Gordon, Dune, Conan the Barbarian, Judge Dredd, Solomon Kane, etc, etc.

I'm more "weirded out" by how many people are even discussing "racial diversity" and "gender diversity" in a MOVIE. Is it really that critical how many of X race and Y gender are in the film, if the fake, fictional, made up story just happens to not include X race or Y gender? Do we really need to try to cram in modern social issues into a space ADVENTURE about dudes with laser swords and magic powers? It's the folks that keep insisting everything be "diverse" that are making the idea of a dark skinned lead character even an issue.

On the subject, I've never seen the guy in any other work, and I hold no judgement about him one way or the other. Either he's good in the movie, or he isn't, and his success in the role isn't limited to his ability as an actor. Hayden Christianson and Natalie Portman are both pretty good actors and their performances in the PT are arguably their worst "on screen" because of what they had to work with. I would hope he wasn't cast just to meet some token diversity quota, and he was really the best for the roll based on the choices available. I hope the guy does a good job because I want a good Star Wars movie, not because I want the ethnic minority to break the shackles of modern day oppression or some such nonsense.

Remember, it's fiction, and fiction doesn't have to be diverse if the story isn't written that way. Please unbunch y'alls panties.

Because we had the father son dynamic with Luke and his dad, it follows thematically to show the father son dynamic with Luke and his son.

I think AD will be 3PO as ever until otherwise noted certainly for Chewie PM will be in a position where he's going to be doubled both by actor and CG double at times but it's not like besides running around they ever did much ape-like athletic action with him anyway.

Looks very possible that Ridley will be the daughter of Leia and Han and Domhnall Gleeson could be Luke's son.

Depends who this new trio is supposed to be. Presumably the good guys trio vs the bad guy or guys including Driver as reported. This is the main cast but no reason other support players won't be kept secret for a long time yet.

The PT was a boy without a real father and OT was a boy without a father so maybe the follow-up now is a boy with a father.

Given that we've already seen black and female characters, yes, they do exist in the Star Wars universe, and yes, it does matter.

None of that really matters to me. You said Serkis was the only actor associated with a major franchise, and I corrected that.

Also neither Dune nor Exorcist are franchises "decades past". The last Exorcist film was released post 2000 and it's also greenlit for a remake. Dune has major miniseries post 2000, book releases and another theatrical Dune film has been in development for the last few years.

I still wish that Luke could be the main character one more time regardless of his older age. I think that's what's keeping me from being "truly hyped."

Here is the thing: Remember way back where Ryan Gosling was rumored for a the part for Luke's son?

I think Gleeson is the one who got that role. But Luke's son, given his age, seems more as an anchor lead than a central character.

That would give more credence to Boyega or Ridley as a central character.

Luke's son may seem to take the part as the more mature role(ala Han Solo)

Um... that's not what I was weirded out by. I'm not demanding diversity, merely pointing out that Boyega's casting is getting a disproportionate amount of flak.

I'm not sure why you're constructing this strawman and then hammering out a wall of text to burn it down.

Hopefully - wondering if they'll get them all to put on American accents.

Something that annoyed me about The Old Republic is that the Sith were all British, while the Republic were all American, when by the logic of the accents in the Star Wars universe (Imperial officers all speaking with RP accents because that was the accent of Coruscant) it should be the opposite way around. With any luck, the British actors don't just 1) play baddies, or 2) play American goodies.

You do realize that George wrote the actual story and began early production on this new trilogy BEFORE he sold it to Disney, right? He didn't just dust off some old notes from the Reagan era. He crafted the entire story for VII-IX, to the point of informing Fisher and Hamill of their involvement. He also stated that he was actually in negotiations with them already prior to the Disney sale.

Lucas is heavily involved in the creation of this new trilogy.

We also know that Asians and Children exist in the Star Wars universe, why aren't they in the main cast? Should we be calling the ACLU for discrimination? Or can we just accept that maybe this particular story didn't call for those kinds of characters?

Is my point really such a stretch?

If people are hoping Luke, Han and Leia are going to be the continuing main protagonists of the sequel trilogy, I'M AFRAID I'VE GOT SOME BAD NEWS.
