Mark has always given every indication that he adores this character. It was clear when the Disney purchase was made and they announced they'd be doing the sequels that he went above and beyond to start getting himself into shape to play Luke again. Recent photos show that the hard work paid off. Of all of the actors in Episode VII, Mark is probably the one I'm least worried about.

Plus, I cannot wait to have a bearded old Luke figure to add to my collection. :D

Also, as fans I think we need to have extreme loyalty to the man who consciously goes out of his way to accomodate us. If you have ever seen him give a presentation or followed his career, you know what I mean.

I think the point was missed.

I've said, several times, that I think Mark will look great in the film. But the picture I posted is generally the image many who think of older, recent Mark have (or worse considering that the blue shirt pic is actually fairly recent).

The most recent pictures are obscure shots that only diehards are really aware of. It's not the image of Mark that's in the minds of the people who are making cracks about his looks (and there are still people who have seen the current shots and still are unhappy).

Also the blue shirt image is not six months old. It's from a Lucas ranch promotional video posted less than 3 months ago, and represents Mark AFTER he'd already lost a ton of weight.

There are going to be people who aren't going to really buy Mark as Luke again until they see glossy promo shots, a trailer, or even the film itself.

And, of course, there will be people who won't ever buy an aged Luke (or Leia. or Han) no matter how they look in the new film. Some people just do not want to see their heroes in an older state. I mean some douche in another thread told me my inner child can't still have a crush on Leia because she's too old to be crush worthy. People really think like this.

I realized that there will be people who just can't get past age when I saw cracks on older Indiana Jones in KOTCS, and I think Harrison looked freaking amazing in that, still vital, active, and in great shape for a man of any age.

It was posted 3 months ago, but it was filmed prior to the fundraiser announcement and release. It was filmed in the fall. The initial release for the fundraiser even mentions the video (which wasn't posted to much later).

Thanks, didn't know that. I thought Mark looked in better shape physically even in that video.

I did get your point from your previous post about people's perceptions. Once official promo pics hit, those people are going to be shocked.

Having had witnessed Mark in July at CEII at face value, he did an amazing job in the recent months. Same goes for Fisher and Mayhew (who sat in a wheelchair the whole time). I am really looking forward to their work on EPVII: I had a crush on Leia as well (who hadn't?) and I think she will do an amazing job as well. Her CEII panel was funny as hell. As a matter of fact I do hope they get Warwick Davis a role (with a speaking part) because he rocks...

I'm still confused as to what the controversy is about. The new movie is set 35 years after Jedi, and I would have a harder time buying into a Luke that DID NOT look quite a bit older. The Obiwan in the Original trilogy looks a lot older than he did in the prequel, and that was only a gap of 20 years.

Plus, it's not completely Mark's fault. He had that really nasty car accident (or was it a motorcycle accident) decades ago that messed up his face. The doctors patched it up pretty well, but that patchwork is failing with age. Personally, I think that he looks pretty good in the pic where he's growing a beard.

    sigh

How can people think Mark is not good looking now? He's adorable! He just always seems happy and enthusiastic. Granted I have had a crush on him for 30+ years since I was a little girl so I am very biased... but because they are bringing back Mark, Carrie and Harrison (mainly Mark) the mouse will get my money shoved in his little gloved hand and I will happily see Star Wars Ep VII at least 2x to 3xs in the theaters, buy the Blu Ray on release, buy the soundtrack, the novel and Luke Skywalker & R2 figures.

He can play Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. No problem there at all.

And Disney gets my money, the movie theater gets my popcorn money, Mark gets paid and I get stuff :D It's win/win.

No joke. I will see VII more time in the theater than I've ever seen a movie before. And it is because seeing Luke as a Jedi Master is something I've wanted to see since 1983. Combine that with Mark being a genuinely nice guy, Disney can take my money for all Luke merchandise.

I know, I hope they do a midnight launch at Toys R Us too when the new merch is released. I need my Luke stuff. Seeing Luke as a Jedi Master is going to be worth the price of admission alone.

Well I think its legitimate that people can be wary of famous characters being reprised 30 years later, cos that timegap means nothing to those who've just seen the constantly watched older movies. Unlike Ford who's stayed a prominent movie star, and has aged real well, its legitimate the wider audience might be nothing but distracted at how much older Mark and Carrie look. But Mark is looking good and Im sure their roles will be appropriate. I have faith in JJ. He did good with Nimoy I guess (but im no classic trek fan)

I'll admit that I kind of lost track of what Carrie has done most SW. She's the one who seems to have had the least success. Her Scream 3 cameo was really amusing. With Mark, while his success in live-action has been mixed (I liked his recent guest role on Criminal Minds), he's had a great deal of success as a voice actor.

Shortly after Star Wars she seemed to be doing quite well, acting wise, with roles in Woody Allen films and "When Harry met Sally" but after that I'm only aware of her weird narcissistic shows and cameos.

Other than being a well received, highly sought after writer/screenplay doctor, and doing her one woman comedy shows. Yeah, Carrie really faded after Star Wars by taking her talents in other directions.

    Not true...at all.

Carrie went on to work with some incredible film directors (she just shot a David Cronenberg film last year) , has guest work on a ton of acclaimed TV shows, including regular voice work for Family Guy, has been nominated for two Emmy awards, and became a celebrated author and script doctor.

She's the only member of the big 3 who never had any serious "stardom" aspirations, being the only one born into fame. Yet she's had a very solid, varied career in this industry.
