ST Daisy Ridley (Rey) in Episode VII

Thanks for that. We've certainly established that her character has a major action role in this movie; likewise John's. It's stuff like that that makes me wish the movie was coming out next week!

 

Maybe she has some scenes where she is being chased on foot and she is free running? Hmmmm

 

I got another tidbit from that extra on set I talked about before. He said he was pretty certain Daisy was speaking all her lines in her natural accent. If true, I'm really happy about this as there's a really interesting quality about the way her voice sounds when speaking that way. I also asked if he heard anyone mention her character's name, but he said that she was always addressed as Daisy by the crew.

 

I love her accent so this is good news to me.

 

Worth noting that in outdoor shoots, the dialogue is generally re-recorded and looped back into the cut later. Could very well be that they're planning to do that for the Abu Dhabi scenes, so she was just using her neutral accent and will re-record with something else later. She could also be using her neutral accent throughout the entire film. Who knows!

 

It'd be weird though if she had that accent and her parents have no accent............ How would that make sense? lol

 

Accents have more to do with where you grew up than they do with the accent your parents have.

 

Maybe her parents aren't who we think they are.

Now that's interesting! If she's a Solo it lends weight to the idea that she's estranged from them or separated from them as a child; or of course isn't a Solo at all...

 

Anakin and Shmi didn't have the same accent either. In all likelihood, Daisy's accent being different from her parents' accents won't mean anything.

 

Possibly, but I think if she's affecting an American accent in this movie then the mouth movements would need to reflect this. It was immediately obvious to me that Shelagh Fraser wasn't speaking with an American accent in ANH, even as a child watching the movie. Voice coaches would be on to this these days.

 

True enough, I don't have an Irish accent. It might confuse a cinema audience though; if she is indeed a Solo, the difference would have to make sense.

 

Everyone has an accent.

 

Star Wars fans(I'm including myself) tend to notice and dwell on things like this, the general audiences probably won't even notice it.

I am wondering in fact what exactly is her natural accent. I've seen her speak in very little projects so I'm not really positive that , I think it's Essex, accent is her accent. Perhaps something a little less strong, but not quite American.

 

Yeah it's not a subtle accent difference. She has a pretty thick accent. Although i've heard she can do a few accents so maybe that isn't her natural accent. lol

Perhaps the source doesn't realize what exactly her natural accent is. They hear slight British and think that is her natural voice.

On a kind of off topic note, Domhnall Gleeson's natural Irish accent doesn't really need any changes to fit into Star Wars to me.

 

I've always believed she's a Solo, but that accent thing has me slightly worried. And also concerned that if she isn't, have Han and Leia even got kids?! This was one of my initial worries, and I'll be extremely disappointed if this is the case.

I do find it funny that Ridley is the actress who was known the least and we're getting the most info on her

 

She's from Maida Vale so probably something between RP with a bit of Cockney twang, but I'm guessing. Methinks definitely not Essex; at least I hope not...

Thank you for that, I hadn't seen that before. I saw the one where she was go karting. Her accent is a little less strong in this. I think if she tones this down a little more it could work as Han and Leia's daughter.

Claire1976- I wouldn't worry, that interview with her dad seemed to imply she is the daughter of Han and Leia.

 

And if her character is indeed very gymnastic, as Darth Simon hinted, that all but screams Jedi. And if she is a Jedi, I think that increases the chances of her being a Solo.
