ST Lupita Nyong'o (Maz Kanata) in Episode VII

Just a random aside I am curious about... If a "casting call" doesn't explicitly state "open to all ethnicities", who is expected to respond?

 

I think it would mean that they are looking for a white actor.

 

Definitely glad that this rumor came true. An amazing actress and I am looking forward to seeing what she can do.

 

I haven't seem enough of Lupita to make a
call on her. As for the other I think I have watched enough GoT to say with certainty that's not Brienne.

I don't know why but I REALLY want to see her play a bounty hunter or a pirate.

Guys keep in mind that the day after the cast reveal at the end of April, Entertainment Weekly claimed that their sources indicated that there are other roles to fill but the rest were smaller roles. There is nothing to indicate that either of these women are one of the three leads other than junping to the conclusion that Lupita has to be one of the trio/leads based on the fact alone that she won an Oscar.

She is just too beautiful.

 

this is a surprise simply because Star Wars generally tries to go for the cheap and with Ford probably eating most of the actor budget, she basically came name her wage after winning an Oscar. Perhaps she gave them a Star Wars Discount? or like others have stated she may be in for a smaller role than JJ is letting on, thus allowing easier marketing?

 

Why would they get big actors to play background characters?

 

Exaclty, you don't get Luptia coming off an Oscar for a glorfied cameo role.

 

A good point but I don't expect everyone they got to get major screen time at least in the first movie, they need to phase some of the OT out.

 

I'm so freaking excited about this news. She's awesome, talented, and beautiful. A great addition to the SW franchise. Yay! Am *soooo* glad this rumor panned out after all.

 

None of the trio in each of the first two trilogies were big stars. All of the bigger stars were brought in as the smaller support roles and mentor roles. Why would that change now?

All those set pictures we're seeing are of extras. There's no way they are bringing in Oscar winners to be extras.

 

This is true but at the sametime Lupita is a big name after the Oscar. I'm not saying she's one of the main leads in the Trio, but that doesn't mean she won't have a meaty role.

 

Neither of them are leads. If they were they would have been announced before hand.

 

Nice to have someone of her calibre on board, bravo JJ.

 

Some of these characters may have bigger roles in the next two movies or could even be the subjects of spinoffs. It's possible their roles are small in this film but bigger down the road. I wouldn't assume either of these women are going to be leads right out of the gate.

 

I'm sure Lupita won't be relegated to a "background" role, I'm sure she'll have something to sink her teeth into. But it doesn't mean that just because she won the Oscar (and deservedly so) she HAS to be a lead. As someone else has said, some very well known actors have appeared in SW, in strong SUPPORTING roles. People like Terence Stamp, Jimmy Smits, Samuel L Jackson, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee and even Alec Guiness could be considered a supporting role.

So, well known actors DO get supporting roles in SW. Can't Lupita follow suit?

 

This cast is getting better all the time

 

She wasn`t at the script reading so I doubt she will be in a main role, but maybe somehow related to Boyega`s character?

 

I think Lupita is going to play the real villain of the series. If Driver is the "Vader" then that implies he's not fully irredeemable. So that means there needs to be someone who isn't remotely redeemable.

 

I'm pretty sure she's Ventress!!!
